My invention relates to toilet goods and more particularly it relates to compacts or vanity cases adapted to contain toilet goods, such as face powder, rouge, puffs, mirrors,

'5 etc., of such a size as may be easily carried in a hand bag, a purse, or a pocket.

Among the novel features of the invention is the provision of a plate slidable underneath an opening in the bottom of a powder receptacle positioned within the main container, the bottom of said receptacle forming a so-called false bottom for the container and the plate upon being moved outwardly forming a shelf carrying thereon sufiicient powder for one application.

The exterior means making the powder accessible saves space within the compact that would otherwise be required for an exposed dispensing means, such as a perforated lid or the like. The powder and rouge pufis may be positioned on one exposed face when the cover is open and the mirror on the other, so that it is unnecessary to provide any interior hinged plates for carrying a mirror or other accessories. The construction is such as to be inexpensive to manufacture and lends itself to economy and oompactness of space required. I 7

Among the objects of the invention is the provision of an article of the class described, which is simple in construction, which may be readily and conveniently fabricated and assembled, which may be economically manufactured andwhich, in its construction, as-. sembly and use provides improvements and conveniences not hitherto employed in the art for the same general purposes. A more particular object of the invention is the provision of. means for making the powder contents accessible from the exterior of the compact. j 3 Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein described and shown will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein given.

To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein described and shown and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring now more particularly tothe drawings, the invention is illustrated as embodied in a compact or vanity case, taking the form of a main rectangular container or casing 10, equipped with a lid or cover 11, hingedly connected to the container, as at 12. The inside of the lid 11 contains a mirror plate 13 held inposition by a flange'H.

The container 10 comprises a bottom wall 17, side walls 15 and end walls 16. The container 10 has a vertical strip 18 positioned therein and closely fitting the side walls 15 and 16. The top edge portion of the strip 18 is turned inwardly to form a peripheral flanged member 19. The flanged member 19 and a similarly flanged cross member 20 provide means for holding a powder receptacle 21 and a small container 25 fixedly in position within the container 10. The bottom walls of the container 25 and thereceptacle 21 form equally spaced false bottoms for the container.

The container 25 provides a housing for a rouge cake 26 and an overlying rouge puff 27. A pair of oppositely positioned detents 28 are formed in the end walls of the container 25 to hold the rouge cake 26 in position. The powder receptacle 21 has a cover, taking the form of a pan 23, which provides a housing for a powder puff 2d. The pan 23 is wedged between the flanged members 19 and 20, upon which "it rests and fits sufiiciently close to prevent its release in case the compact should be turned upside down. The pan 23 fits its mounting sufficiently close to prevent powder from sifting around the pan and yet yields to permit the pan to be pried loose from its mounting when the supply of powder 22 in the receptacle 21 needs replenishing.

Novel means is provided for dispensing powder 22 without opening the cover 11 or, if the cover 11 is opened, without changing or disturbing the interior arrangement of the contents of the compact. For this purpose a plate 29, extending the full length of the container 10 is slidably mounted between the bottom wall 17 of the container on the one side and the bottom of the container 25 and the powder receptacle 21 on the other side. The forward end of the plate 29 projects through an aperture provided for that purpose in the front wall 16 of the container 10. When the plate 29 is in its closed posi tion, its forward edge is in alignment with the outer face of the wall 16. The bottom wall 17 stops short of the front edge of the container 10 sufiiciently to make accessible a groove or aperture 32 formed in the plate 29. "'Tli'plat'e 29 fits closely in its runway between the bottoms of the containers and the the groove 32 is provided as a convenient means for grasping the exposed end of the plate, thereby enabling the plate to be easily slid or moved in its mounting to the position shown in Fig. 1.

The bottom of the powder receptacle 21, which functions as afalse bottom for the container, is provided with an opening which permits the contents 22 to contact with the slidable plate 29. The position of the opening 30 and the amount of movement of the plate 29 is such that the plate provides a closure for the opening in all positions, that portion of the plate 29, closing the opening 30 when the plate is retracted, being provided with a plurality of serrations 21 by means of which a quantity of powder is car ried outwardly and made accessible when the plate is advanced, as shown in Fig. 1. The powder puff 2a contained in the pan 23 is positioned adjacent the projecting end of the plate 29 so as to be easily accessible as a means for applying the powder contained in the serrations 31. Any surplus powder remaining on the exposed portion of the plate 29 is carried back into the container and the powder receptacle 21 when the plate is returned to its closed position.

The bottom of the pan 23 containing the powder puff 24 may, if desired, form a horizontal mirror available for use as such when the powder puff 24. is removed.

By providing means for dispensing powder exteriorly of the container, perforated plates and other similar devices for dispensmg powder interiorly-of the container are l nnecessarily and are omitted, whereby the container can be made relatively small and iiminnfnetnred at a lower pri eethan such compacts as heretofore constructed having accessories for the interior dispensing of the powder only.

Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construc tion, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the kind described, a container having a false bottom with an opening therethrongh, a dispensing plate slidably movable in close fitting contact with the underside of said false bottom and forming a closure for said opening, means permitting a limited reciprocal movement of the plate, the

movement of said plate being such that the opening is constantly closed by the plate, that portion of the plate closing said opening when the plate is retracted, bcing'outside of the container when the plate is extended.

2. In a device of the kind described, a container having a false bottom with an opening therethrongh, a dispensing plate slidably movable in close fitting contact with the un der-side of said false bottom, means permitting a limited reciprocal movement of the plate, the position and size of said opening and the movement of said plate being such that the opening is constantly closed by the plate, and a plurality of serrations in that portion of the plate covering said opening when the plate is retracted, said serrations being outside of the container when the plate is extended.

3. In a device of the kind described, a

container, a closed powder receptacle positioned in said container with its bottom wall in spaced relation to the bottom wall of the container, a plate slidably movable in the container in close contact with the bottom wall of said receptacle, and means permitting a limited reciprocal movement of the plate, the bottom wallof the receptacle having an opening so positioned as to be constantly closed by the plate throughout its reciprocal move ment, that portion of the. plate closing said opening when the plate is retracted, being outsideof the container when the plate is extended its maximum amount.

4:. In a device of the kind described, a con tainer, a closed powder receptacle positioned in said container with its bottom wall in spaced relation to the bottomwall of the container, a plate slidably movable in the container in close contact with the bottom wall of said receptacle, means permitting a limited reciprocal movement of the plate, the bottom wall of the receptacle having an opening so positioned as tobe constantlyclosedby t e plate throughout its reciprocal movement,

and a plurality of serrations on that portion of the plate closing said opening When the plate is retracted, said serrations being outside of the container when the plate is extended.
