Description

Aug. 11, 1931. E. A. OLLEY WALL COVER PLATE AND MOUNTING THEREFOR Filed Sept. 6. 1929 INVENTOR.
A TTORNEYS Patented Aug. 11, 1931 UNIE STATES PATENT b FH E EDWIN A. GLLEY, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK,.ASSIG-NOR TO CRGUSE-HINDS CGEl-LPl-iNY, 0F SYRACUSE, HEW YGHK, A GORPGRA'IION OE NIVV YGRK WALL COVER PLATE AND MOUNTING THEREFOR Application filed. September This invention has for its object a particularly simple and eflicient means for closing openings in walls, or what for the sake of convenience I have called an access opening 5 cover which can be readily installed and the cover plate thereof readily removed and replaced.
The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions l0 hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an edge View of this access opening cover, the contiguous part of the wall structure being also shown.
Figure 2 is a plan View of parts seen in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective View of this cover, the contiguous portions of a wall being also shown.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 showing the cover from the opposite side of that shown in Figure 3.
Figure 5 is .an enlarged fragmentary View with contiguous portion of the wall structure being shown.
Figure 6 is a detail view of a portion of the fastening means self contained with the plate.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary plan View illustrating the fastening means.
In building structures, it has become quite common practice to build a false wall or a double wall and to locate electric conduits, wires and other piping in the space behind the false wall and in order to have access to the space behind the wall, it is necessary to have an opening, although .at the time the wall is built, the location of the opening may not have been definitely determined. Some of the piping behind the wall may have valves to which access must be had.
This invention relates to means for providing a cover and mounting for such openings.
The invention consists of a marignal frame 1 here shown as rectangular in general form and confining a rectangular opening and a e, 1929. Serial No. 390,320.
detachable cover plate 2. The mounting forms a facing for the edge of the wall .V e:-: posed in the opening in which the mounting is placed and has an outwardly extending flange 3 which is engaged with and secured to the inner faceof the margin of the wall W It may be secured to-the rear side of the laths to which the plaster of the wall is applied or to the framing asthe two by'fours of'thewall. In any case, ithe flange 3 pmvides means for securing the mounting to the wall.
The cover plate 2 which lies substantially flush with the outer wall lV has a marginal flange 4 opposing the flange 3 and forming a channel in which the margin of the wall lVis located. The cover is secured to the mounting by fastening means self-contained therewith and coasting with the mounting and here shown as coacting with an upwardly extending marginal flange 5 at the front end of the mounting. This flange 5 overhangs the opening confined by the mounting.
The fastening means as here shown includes a screw 6 having its head 7 exposed on the outside of the cover, the screw extending through the cover and threading into a nut 8 having an outwardly extending arm 9 which when the screw is turned swings under or behind the fiange 5 and clamps against the flange'5. The nut 8 is here shown as provided with a'follower or pin 10 which is located in a guideslot 11 formed in a bracket 12 projecting from the inner side of the cover plate 2. The slot 11 has a straight portion parallel to the screw and an angular cam portion 13 at the end of the straight portion nearest the cover plate. A compression spring 14: is interposed between the nut 8 and the cover plate. Any number of fastening devices may be employed and as here shown there are four of such devices.
In operation, when the cover plate is placed in position, the follower or pin 10 is at the remote end of the slot 10 and during turning of the screw, the nut 8, as it cannot turn, feeds up the screw toward the cover plate and as it approaches the cover plate, it reaches the angular portion 13 of the slot 11 so that the turning of the screw swings the arm 9 of the nut 8 around under the flange 5 and continued turning action tightens the arm 9 against the flange and securely clamps the cover plate to the mounting.
The specific construction of the fastening device forms no part of this invention and it is of importance insofar as it is sel'fcontained in the cover plate. O ing to the construction of the mounting and the cover plate, the mounting can be readily placed in position in the opening and thereafter the COYGl plate readily applied and removed.
hat I claim is 1. The combination of a mounting in the form of a marginal frame confining an opening, said frame having a body portion constituting a lining for the edge face around an opening in a wall or partition out a building, an outwardly extending flange at the inner nd of the body for lanpingand securementto the wall around the opening, and an inwardly extending flange overhanging the opening cou lined by the frame and a cover plate having means selt'contained therewith on the 'nner side thereof for c acting with the inwardly extending iiange for securing the cover plate on the mounting, said securing means having an operating member exposed on the outer side of the cover plate, the cover plate having a flange extending laterally beyond the body of the mounting and together with the outwardly extending flange of the mounting forming a channel in which the margin of the wall extends.
2. he combination of a mounting comprising a body in the form of a marginal frame forming the facing for the edge of a wall exposed at the opening in the wall in which the mounting is placed, the mounting having a laterally extending flange at the inner side of the wall for lapping and secureinent to the wall, a cover plate for closing the opening confined by the mounting, said plate having means selt'contained therewith tor coacting with the mounting for securing the cover plate in position, the cover plate having an outwardly extending marginal flange opposed to the flange of the mounting and tormin g a channel. for receiving the margin of the wall in which the mounting is placed.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, and Sta te oi New York, this 17th day oi August, 1999.
