PRINTING PLATE HOLDING MEANS Filed Sept. (5, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 mulation of extraneous matter, such as particles of Ehe type plate composition, ink, oil, and t-he like, adhering to the contact surfaces, not only preventing the ready inser- Cion and removal of ehe characters or plates, but preventing accurate registry in eolor printing, and it was to overco1ne the deliciencies of such devices and to provide a holding means adapted to hold a printing plat-e, a plurality of lines of individual type characcors or type strips, and comprising means for engaging tl1e edges or flanges o1 such pla es or printing characters, and adjustable to accommodate difi"erent sized prin ting element-s, slidablo keepers adapted to engage said printing characters to lock them in position and so designed as to prevent marring of either the contact surfaces of the characters or plates or the cont-act surfaces of the holder proper, the prineiple of the invention being applicable with equal facility 130 band sta1np or rocker arm 1narl; ers, and cylinder o1 flat bed presses, said holding means eliminating the usual chase and const-ituting a form when tho usual printing elements are operatively positioned, that I designed the holding 1neans forn1ing the subject matter of this invention In the utilization of n1y holding 1neans slight variations in for1n are, of oourse, necessary as applied to hand marl:ors, and cylinder or flat bed presses, but without departing fro1n the prineiple of the invention, and in the form illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4: and 5, there is shown a band o1 rocker arm marker A; a slightly modili-ed 1iorn1 o1 marker B shown in Figs. 6 and 7, and whieh without the handle is equally applioable to cylinder presses, and fiat bed presses, when formed with a plane surfaee; and aslmilar form C, primarily for flat bed presses, Where the use of different sized printing characters is desirable, as shown in Figs. 8 and 9.

The bars 3 are adapted to engage the flanges 6 of a printing plate 7 having suitably formed thereon printing oharaeters 8 to maintain said printing element: -or plate in operative osition on holder 1, and are adjustable longitudinally with respect to said slots to accommodate printing plates or ele- 1nents of diflerent sizes and to properly position such elements with respeot 130 the holder 1, for printing 011 or marking coarse fab rics, wooden containers, corrugated paper, galvanized iron and bhe like. Each of the intermediate bars 3 is adapted to engage the flange of a printing plate 011 each side of the bar, as indicated at 9 and 1-0, respectively,
and it is obvious that a series o1 plates 7 of varying sizes may be suitably 1nounted on the holder 1 and when the bars are brought into engagement with the flanges 6 of said plates and secured in position by tightening holt-s o1 screws 4, the holder 1 Ehen oonstioutes in effect a form.
Suitably secured to the back 01 said holder 1 by welding or other suitable fastening means is a frame 11, in Ehe present instance, iern1inating at each end in upstanding spaced ears 12, in which are suitably mounted transversely extending handles 13 by means of Whieh the marker A is operated, as Will be understood without further description. However, for reasons hereinafter more. fully appearing, the fra1ne 11 may be detachably secured to the holder 1, if desired.
F r0n1 the above it is clear that said printing charaoters may be expeditiously rernoved loy loosening the bolts 4 and disengaging bars 3 fro1n the respective flanges of th-e printing plates o1 printing elements, as desired.
In I1igs. 6 and 7 there is shown another forrn of n1arker B in Whieh the face of holder 1a is formed with a plurality of parallelly extending longitudinal channels 141, the side Walls 0f eaeh of the channels being; grooved as at 15 to slidably reeeive cl1e flanges 6a of the printing plate 0r individual printing elements 7a for1ned with printing charaoters or indicia 8a, and it is evident that the printing characters 1nay be formed individually and assernbled in said channels or they rnay be formed on an integral platze or strip similarly 1nounted therein, in either case such plate or characters being locked in position loy keepers 16 for1ned with siniilar slidable flanges 6a, each of said keepers when brought into engage1nent With its respective printing element or strip adapted to loe locked in position by actuation of screw 17 extending through said keeper and into binding contaet with the roughened surface 18 of the longitudinally extending groove 19 formed in the bottom Wall of' channel 14, as

In view of the above, it is evident that the wiclth of the channels 145 may be variecl accercling to the partieular reqnirementswithout cleparting from the spirit of my invention.
From the foregoing it is apparent th'at I have clesi.gnecl a printing plate holding xneans, 1nore espeolally adaptecl to accommoclate printing plates or ele1nents comprising a s0licl metallic backing and a superimposed nulober 0r other resilient design bearing material seeured to one surface thereof, such as clescribecl ancl claimed in an application filed concurrently herewith and forrning an improvement on my prior Patent N0. 1,589665. Also, that the forme above described are similar, being only modifiecl in the way of provicling handles ancl to accom1noclate printing plates for difl'erent types of work, ancl fo1 ntilization in conneetion with different prlntfor cliflerent types of print ing such as band stamps 01 rooker arm markers, cylincler presses and fiat becl presses. In a strncture as above describecl, the oomloination with ='.a holder, inolucling a;pfl1l1- rality of chahnels, each of saicl ehannels formed with guides und a gmove inthe bottmn Wall thereof,of a plunalityof printing elements .aclapted to engage -;S2bid channels ancl including lateral flanges a =lapted .to seat in saic-l guidest; keepers formed with similag-r flanges adapted to seat in saicl.guides;andengage the free ends of the respeetive printin-g elements, and:adj nstzpble meansearriedby the keepers ancl engageable in saicl longitudinal groves to .l=ooksaicl praiutn'ng elements in said holder without affecting the contaet surfaces of said channe-ls and printing elements, whereby said elements are readilyslidalole in said channels irrespeotive of continueclusage.
2. In a structure as above desoribed, the combination with a holderincluding a plurality of channels formecl with guideways and With a groove in the bottom Wall thereof, certain of saicl channels being of greater Width than the others ancl formed witha plu rality of grooves in its bottom Wall, of a plurality of printing elements corresponding in wiclth to the respeotive channels anal formed with lateral flanges adapted to slidably engage said guideways, keepers formed with lateral flanges adapted t0 slidably seat in said guides and engage the free ends of saicl printing elements and corresponding in configuration to the respeoti've channels, and means carried by the respective keepers ancl adj ustable 130 engage the respective grooves to look said printing elements in said holder'whereby the botto1n Walls of seid channels are not .marred by said adjustable 1neans and the pr1nting elements are readily slidable inthe channels irrespeetive of extraneous matter therein.
3. In a structure above described, the combination with a holderinolucling a plurality of channels, each of said channels formed with guicles and a groove in the bottom Wall thereof having a roughened bottom surface, a plurality f printing elements seating in the channkals und engaging said guides, keepers engagable With the free enc1s of said printing clementsanclmeans carriedbythe keepers and engagable With the roughened surface t0 lock the printing elements in said channels, Whereby the bottom Walls of the channels are prevented from being damaged by said means, thereby permitting thefeady removal of said elements irrespective of continued use and the accumulation of extraneous matter in the channels.
4. In a structure zus above desciibed, the combination With holder including a plurality 0f channels, euch 0f said channels forined with guides and a groove in the bottom WLll thereof formed With a rughened surface, a plurality 0f printing elements seating in the respective channels and engaging said guides,
keepers slidable in the channels und engagable With said elements und guides, and an adjustable member carried by the respective keepers and engagable with the roughened surface 0f a respective groove, whereby the printing elements are locked in the channels, marring of the bottom Walls thereof prevented, und ready removal of said elements effected, irrespective of continued use and the accumulation 0f extraneous matter in the channels.
