LAMP AND HEATER Application filed December 10, 1926. Serial No. 154,0()3.
/ Thisjinvention relates to an improvement in electrical apparatus, and the same has for its object to provide an apparatus which may be used for illuminating purposes or for heating o r cooking. The apparatus may also be used simultaneously both for illuminating and heating or cooking. My invention consists of a novel construction of ay combined electric heater and elec- 1`0 tric table lamp, wherein I utilize the hollow base of the lamp structure as an electric heater, so that when the lamp is inverted the heater can be operated to heat the room or if desired to heat an article as water, etc.
l A urther'object of this invention is to construct a table lamp with a hollow base,
the latter being utilized as a heating compart-ment and adapted to operate simultaneously with the lamp.
` 270 The object of this invention is to provide a combined electric lamp and heater with spec 'cial provisions to prevent the accidental operation of heater when the lamp is in normal position or when the lamp alone is desired to `be used.
y A further object is to. .provide a combined lampand heater and automatic provision for turning oi' the current from the heater when the lamp and heater istilted or overturned from its operative position.
A further object of "this invention is to provide a combined electric lamp and heater and automaticprovision for turning on and off the current to the heater. f
A furtherobject of this invention is the provision of a lamp and shade, the latter adapted to tilt on the globe of the lamp and prevented from `falling by a loop carriedon the lamp. f f f f A Afurther object of this invention is the yprovision of an asbestos orheating pad having depressions or channels for circulating air.v l
A further object of this invention is the y provision of an electric iron and means to automatically shut oi the current when the iron is tilted. K v
A furtherl object of this invention is the provision of an article containing an electric t heating element and means to automatically Vsupporting a grid 16 and ridge 7 supporting shut off the current when the article is tilted. y
A further object is to provide a combined toaster 'and hot plate having a central support for cooking and thin radiating wires for toasting.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a front view, partly in section, made in accordance with my invention. f
Fig. 2 is a view of the device in an inverted position also showing the wiring arrangement.
Fig. 3 shows the arrangement of the shade before and after tilting.
Fig. 4 shows a plan view of the mat.
Fig. 5 shows a modified form of the wiring involving the principle of my invention.
Fig. 6 shows an electric iron using the principle ofmy invention.
Fig. 7 shows a cigar lighter using the same principle somewhat modified.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1, denotes a standard for a. lamp having its lower portion formed into a hollow base 2. To the upper part of the standard there is soldered or welded a sleeve 3, to which there ,7.5 areintegrally fixed abutments or supports 4. To the other end of the abutments there is fixed by welding or otherwise a ring 5.
Within the upper end of the standard 1, I plice an ordinary key socket 5 having a so key 6.
The base is either stamped or spun and has two ridges 7 and 8 which will be hereafter explained.
A bulb 9 is placed in the socket. 85
A shade 1() made either of metal, parchment, silk or glass composition has a band or ring 11 made fast to the shade by any desired means, two depressed wires 12 and 13 ending in gripping springs 14 and 15 are attached to the ring 11. The gripping springs 14 and 15 grip the bulb and permits the shade to tilt on the bulb.
The ring 5 acts as a limiting stop and additional support for the shade when it is tilted in one direction as seen in Fig. 3.
Fig. 2 shows the device in an inverted position, with shade removed. In this position the base 2 is utilized as a heater. The ridge 8 (iti an asbestos board 17. A heating unit made ot' nichrome wire is disposed on the asbestos board and is held by terminals I9 and 20.
A tube 2l is arranged within the base 2 and connects to the base ol socket 5. The other end of the tube 2l has a cap with a threaded opening at its end. The tube 2l carries a mercury switch with two terminals projecting therefrom. Two openings Qd, 25 are also provided in the tube 2l to enable the connections to be made.
The assembling ot the heating unit is as follows: The tube 2l, with the mercury switch Q23 is screwed into the socket- 5. On the tube 2l the cap 22 is set. Into the opening of cap a screw 2G is set and carries the grid i6, held down by a washer 2T. Under the depressed center ot the grid I place several layers of mica 2S to prevent contact with live resisting wire Q9. A libre bushing 30 is placed through the asbestos and surrounds the screw preventing contact with the live wire.
The mercury switch 23 is so arranged that the current flows through the switch only when the device is in its inverted or tilted position. i
Any other switch operated by gravity as weight may be used.
The wiring arrangement is as follows The wire 3l goes to terminal 19. The wire 33 is in contact with wire 3l and goes to one terminal ot the soci-:et 5. The wire 3Q goes to the other terminal ot the socket 5. @ne ot' the terminals of the mercury switch has a wire 34 leading into contact with wire 32. The other terminal ot the mercury switch leads to the terminal 2O of the resistance wire Q9.
lith this layout it is seen that either the lamp alone can be used, or the heater alone can be used, or both used simultaneously.
The device is shown resting on a mat made of asbestos or any other fire resistingr material. Depressions or channels 3T are for the purpose ot' permitting a current of air to reach the central portion ot the device and thus enable to cool it otf faster.
Fig. 5 represents a modified wiring arrangement, 38 representing the lamp, 39 the heating coil, and i() a push button switch. This enables the heater being in the upper position and no current running therethrough. The object ot this is to cool the heating unit betore turning back to normal position.
Fig. G is a modilied 'lorm of using the principle of my invention. The feature of this invention may be adapted wherever a heating unit is involved, In this instance I have shown an electric iron 4l, having an endwise resting means 4Q. A plug d3 so constructed as to carry the wires with the additional mercury switch sill. The wiring shown in dotted lines. The heating unit is indicated by numeral i5. It desired the plug and resting means 42 can be made in one or two units, and as such, may be adapted in existing irons.
Fig. 7 is still another modified form of using my invention. In this instance I have shown a cigar lighter having a hollow handle and a box like member 5l open at its end, the electrical connection may be made either at the bottom of handle or end of box member 51, 52 is a resisting element for lighting a cigar, 53 is the mercury element when the lighter is in operation, 54 indicates asbestos or porcelain backing for the resistance element. To turn off the current you simply lay the device flat on a table or pad and to use it you lift it up vertically.
When a metal shade is used on the lamp, the outside is painted to harmonize with the surroundings, while the inside is polished and acts as a reflector when the shade is tilted.
Thus by the above described construction are accomplished among others, the objects hereinbefore referred to.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof. It is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all generic and specilic features of the invention herein described.
