HUMPHREY, OF KALAIVIAZOO, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOB TO RUUD IVIANUFAC- TUBING COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA WATER HEATER Application filed May '7,
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved water heater which is comparatively compact, of large capacity and efiicient in the matter of utilization of heat units of the fuel consumed.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical central section of my improved water heater taken on line 11 of Figs. 2 and 3.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is a horizontal section on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: is a side elevation of the base or burner chamber unit of my improved heater.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation-of the casing body unit of my improved heater.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the casing top unit of my improved heater.
Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the intermediate reservoir or boiler unit of my improved heater.
Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the inner reservoir or boiler unit of my improved heater.
Fig. 9 is a side view of a portion of the inlet water supply pipe.
Referring to the drawings, my improved heater in the embodiment illustrated comprises a base unit 1 constituting a burner chamber, the burner 2 being arranged therein. Above and supported by this burner is a casing unit designated generally by the numeral 3 and comprising concentric outer and inner walls a and 5 providing an annular reservoir 6. These walls are quite close together so that a relatively thin body of water is contained therein. The casing unit has an upwardly converging bottom member 7, the upper end of which is disposed through a flanged opening in the herizontal wall 8 and seamed over the same at 9. These walls 7 and 8 coact to provide 1928. Serial No. 275,723.
A drain pipe 1% opens through the bottom member 8 of the casing unit so that any condensation collected on the bottom member 8 is discharged into the burner chamber or otherwise, as may be desired.v The top casing unit designated generally by the numeral 15 is formed of an outer wall 16 and an inner wall 17 joined at their edges to provide a water reservoir 18. The lower end of this casing top unit is adapted to fit within the upper end of the casingbody unit, the units being formed separately and assembled by fitting the lower end of the casing top unit within the body unit. The casing top unit is provided with a fine opening 19.
The water heating reservoirs 6 and 18 have a circulating connection, preferably external, in the form of a pair or elbows 20 and 21 connected by the union 22. This external connection is readily accessible and also it does not interfere with the arrangement of the additional reservoirs within the casing.
Within the casing I mount an inner cylindrical annular reservoir 23 and an intermediate cylindrical annular reservoir 24, these reservoirs being double-walled and the walls being arranged quite close together. These reservoirs are arranged con centrically relative to each other and to the casing.
The reservoirs 23 and 24 are connected at their lower ends by the couplings 25 providing a circulation connection from the inner reservoir to the intermediate reservoir.
The inner reservoir is provided with a head 26 at its upper end having vent openings 27 therein for the passage of the proclucts of combustion. These vent openings, however, are not of such capacity as to carry off all the heated gases and products of posed to the products of combustion.
combustion so that a substantial portion thereof is compelled to travel outwardly around the outside of the inner reservoir and into contacting relation with the casing and intermeoiate reservoir.
The water supply pipe 28 is connected a coupling 31 at its lower end mounted ithe casing unit t and projects upwardly within the inner reservoir member, being connected to a central coupling in the head.
The upper end of the intermediate reservoir is connected to the top casing uni reservoir, the connection preferably consisting of a cross pipe 29 connected at its end" to the upper end of the intermediate reservoir and the T pipe or conduit 30 conneete centrally to the cross conduit 29 and arms connected to the top unit resc-rv ir. This provides for quite an effective distribution of the water through the reservoirs as it circulates therein. 7

My improved heater is of large capacity in proportion to its size and is highly ellicient in the matter of utilization of the l units of the fuel.
I-Iavin thus described-my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a water heater, the combination a cylindrical double-walledcasing unit constituting a water reservoir, said casing reservoir having a discharge at the bottom thereof. a double-walled casin to) unit consti- L tuting a water reservoir and having a cortral vent opening therethrough, said casing water reservoirs having a circulating connection, inner and'intermed'ate cylindrical annular water reservoirs disposed concen cally relative to each other and to said ing unit, the lower ends of said inner and intermediate water reservoirs having opposed circulating connections, said inner reservoir having a head its upper end provided withvent openings, a water supply conduit disposed within said inner water reservoir and connected centrally to said inner reservoir and the lower end of said supply conduit being connected to a coupling disposed in said casing, and a circulating connection for the upper end of said intermediate water reservoir to said casing top reservoir consisting of a cross cylindrical double-walled casing unit constituting a Water reservoir, said casing reservoir having a discharge at the bottom thereof, a double-walled casing top unit constituting a water reservoir and having a central vent opening therethrough, said casing water reservoirs having a circulating connection, inner and intermediate cylindrical annular water reservoirs disposed concentrically relative to each other and tosaidcasing unit, thelower ends of said inner and intermediate water reservoirs having opposed circulating connections, said inner reservoir having a head at its upper end provided with vent openings, a water supply conduit disposed within said inner water reservoir and connected centrally to said inner reservoir and the lower end of said supply conduit being connected to a coupling disposed in said casing, and a circulating: connecticn for the upper end of said. intermediate water reservoirto said casing topreservoir.
3. In a water heater, the combination of a burner chambcr, burner within said chamber, a cylindricaldouble-walled casing unit constitutinga water reservoir and having an upwardly converging bottom portion provided with a central opening above said burner, said casing having a discharge vent the top, said casing water reservoir having a discharge at the bottom thereof, a double-walled casing top unit constituting a water reservoir and having a central Vent opening therethrough, said casingwater reservoirs having a circulating connection, inner and intermediate cylindrical annular waterreservoirs disposed concentrically relative to each other and to said casing unit,
the spaces between said casing, inner and intermediate reservoirs being open at the top and bottom forthe free circulation of the products of combustion therethrough to said
