Description
B. MARTIN FOLDING TABLE July 14, 1931.
Filed Sept. 13, 1929 INVENTOR MARTIN zJPzL/V W 0 ATTOR Y Patented July 14, 1931 r unites stares rarest eerie-ii BRUNO IEARICIZ'AT, GE SAGIHAW, lzlICI-IIG-AN FGLDIl-EG TABLE Auulieation filed September 13, 1929. Serial No. 418.
This invention relates to folding tables the middle oftheir length to the spindle 8 of the kind employing a flat top member and are connected at their upper ends by a and crossed legs arranged to fold as is usual rail 10. A cleat 11 is secured to the under in camp tables and the like. side of the table top and is provided with The object of the invention is to provide a slot 12 to receive the rail when the table 5"- a folding table of this kind having means is in use, in known manner.
for imparting additional strength to the leg Rails 18, 14 connectthe pairs of legs 5 structure, improving the stability of the and 9 respectivelyat their lower ends. 7 table, to prevent the legs from spreading My invention applies to a table of the con- 10 when the table 1s heavily loaded and to prostruction above described a strengthening e 'vide co venient means for adding to the and steadying structure which consists of a table one or more .trays that may be loaded pair of depending legs 15 pivoted at their with articles. For example, the table as used upper ends to spindle 8 and provided at in the ordinary way may have installed betheir lower ends with outwardly projecting 15 low it, on the spindle at the crossing of the feet 16" that rest upon the floor or ground legs a tray for holding dishes. Another when the table is in use and prevent it from lowermost tray, mounted on the rails at the racking or shaking sidewise. lower ends of the legs, may serve for storing A further steadying and stabilizing device pots and pans. is provided by a tray 17 preferably of metal 29 A still further object is to provide a genand formed with flanges 17a along its side oral utility table of this kind that is ineX- edges, its ends provided with downward propensive to manufacture and is unusually jections 176 that hook over the bottom rails strong and rigid in construction. 13 and 1d. lhe tray 17 thus provides a tie in the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective member for preventing the legs 5 and 9 from view of the table assembled. spreading when the table is loaded and also Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the affords stiffness and rigidity in a horizontal legs folded. plane to hold the legs from sipping side; Fig. 3 is a detail of the top showing the wise or departing from their correct rectan- Q leaves folded. gular ahnement. lhis construction is espe- 39 Fig. l is a part sectional view on the line cially useful when the table is to be set up 8 1l of Fig. '1. on a surface that is smooth or slippery.
Fig. 5 is a part sectional view on the line Another tray 18 rests on thespindle 8 and 5-5 of Fig. 1. is provided with an upwardly projecting lug Fig. 6 is a part sectional view on the line 18a, the upper end of which is secured by 66 of Fig. 1.
As is clearly shown in the drawings the legs 9 to prevent the tray from tilting. Tray invention consists in the usual top member 18 is preferably provided with downward 1 to which folding leaves 2 may be secured projections 19 on its under side to receive by hinges 3 to form side extension members the spindle 8 between them, as shown in for the table top. Cleats 4 secured to the 1. so sides of the top member 1 and projecting By the means above described I have protherefrom support the leaves 2 in their QX vided a table that can be made of light matended position. terial and has exceptionally great tray stor- A pair of legs 5, 5 are secured at their age capacity, yet by reason of its construction upper ends to the table top 1 near an end is strong and will carry heavy loads without w thereof by means of pintles 6 projecting rackin or shaking. from the ends of a cleat 7 secured to the To told the table for transportation the table top 1. Midway the length of the legs leaves 2 are folded upon the top, as shown 5. 5 they are connected by a spindle 8. A in Fig. 3. the screw 18?) 1S unfastened and 59 second pair of legs 9 is also pivoted about the tray 18 lifted out. Then tray 17 is also means of a clamping screw 18?) to oneof the lifted out and the legs 5, 9, 15 are folded against top 1, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
1. In combination, a folding table including a top, pairs of crossed legs, a spindle connecting said pairs of legs at their intersection, a pair of depending legs pivotally secured at their upper ends to said spindle,
transverse rails connecting the adjacent lower ends of said legs, a tray comprising a single piece of sheet metal removably supported at its ends upon said crossed rails, the ends of which are downwardly flanged for engagement with said rails whereby the tray and flanges together act asa stiffening member to hold the lower ends of said legs in normal rectangular alinement, and a second tray having on its bottom a U-shaped downward projection arranged to engage said spindle, an upwardly projecting lug on said tray and means releasably securing said lug to one of the legs of said second pair. 2. A structure as set forth in claim 1 wherein an outwardly projecting foot is fixed to the lower end of each depending leg to provide a stable base therefor.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
BRUNO MARTIN.
