This invention relates to improvements iny wire tying machines. In its entirety it seeks to provide a compact and convenient organization of elements whereby a wire disposed about a package or box may be tightly tensioned, its overlapping bights thereafter tied securely together, one end of the wire cut free from the tensioning means and the tied wires automatically disengaged from the machine. The invention also seeks to provide a disposition and relative arrangement of the various parts whereby they may perform their functions wholly above'the lower surface of the base in order that the machine may operate as near to or remote from an edge of the pack age as may be desired. It also seeks to so locate and arrange the levers or actutaors of the tensioning and tying 'devices that the machine may be operated by hand with the greatest convenience, ease and speed.
The invention consists of the various elements and their combinations hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, and in which like reference numerals designate corresponding parts, the' various features of the invention are shown in their most approved form and arrangement. In said drawings,-

Figs. 10, `11 and 12 are detail views showing the ejector having a retaining device for the wire in modified forms.
Referring now to the speciic features as shown in the drawings, 1 is the base of the machine, preferably consisting of a substantially cast iron plate, on which all the moving parts of the machine are 'mounted This base is usually rectangular in shape as will be noted by reference to Fig. 6. Integral with the base are the front and rear bearing blocks 2 and 3 in which is mounted the main shaft 4. The block 2 is cast in one piece and has a central bore 5 to Vreceive the shaft 4. The rea-r bearing block 3 is made in two parts having a cap 6 which is held in place by screw bolts 7 and 8. F ixed on the front end of the shaft l and outvvard from bearingl block 2 is a spiral twisting gear 9 which meshes with the slotted twisting pinion 10. inion is provided with journals 12 and 13 mounted in bearings provided on the front edge of the base 1. llhe bearings for these journals are formed on projections extending from the front edge of the base, the upper half of the bearings being cut in the projections lll and 15 integral with the base and the lower half of the bearings being out in the block 16 rigidly secured to the bottom of the base by screws 17. The slot 18 in the twisting pinion 10 extends slightly beyond the center of the pinion and its width is slightly in excess of the diameter of the wire upon which the machine is designedto operate, so that two bights of the wire may lie side by side in the slot but cannot move one over the other. The -ournals 12 and 13 are also pro-` vided with slots 19 and 2O aligned with, but considerablyl rger than, the slotlS- to allow tl paralleli ulg. wire.Y te
be twisted together. Rigidly fixed on the shaft l is a driving ratchet wheel 2l operated by the oscillating ratchet lever 22 loosely centered on the shaft l. For this purpose lever 22 is provided with a pawl 23 having a spring 24 to keep it pressed against the ratchet wheel 2l. lt is obvious that an oseillating to and fro movement ot lever 22 will rotate shaft 4: and the twisting gears 9 and l0.
It is important that, at the end of each twisting operation, the twisting pinion always come to rest in the same predetermined position with the slot- 18 opening outward to receive the wire for the next operation. F or this purpose a locking device is provided which is adapted to automatically lock the twisting gears in said. predetermined position at the end of each twisting operation. This lockingY device may be variously arranged but, in the present instance, it consists of a vertically disposed bolt which works through anoriiice 26 in the top ot the bearing block 2 into a recess 27 cut in the shaft 4. Vhen this bolt has engaged the recess 27, the shaft 1land twisting gears are locked against movement with slet 1S in the desired position. The bolt 25 is operated by lever 28 fulcrumed on a stud 29 fined in the top of bearing block 2. Spring 30 serves to press the bolt 25 into the recess 27 whenever the latter registers with the holt.
The machine is provided with suitable tensioning means which will new be described.
l is a tension head having suitable slots cut in its periphery and rigidly tixed on i shaft 32 which turns in a Llcaring 33 integral with the base. Shatt- )2 may bc he in place hy a nut 3ft on its inner end.
, is a ratchet wheel also rigidly lined on the sliatt t desired, it be made integral with the tension head 3l. Loosely centered on shaft is an oscillating ratchet lever 36 provided with a pawl 37 having a spring ESS. A dog "9, having a spri il0, is provided to enga. 'e e rathet Ywhee and prevent retrograde movement thereof. It is desired to have Athe 'lookin device so arranged as to he released autor atically at t ieend oi the tensioning operation. For this purpose lever 36 is so located'with respect tothe locking device that lever 280i the latter is in the path of movement oit iev-cr 36. Thus lever 3G at the' end ot its forward throw engages lever 28 ietiacts bolt from recess 27 andunlocks the'twistiiig devvsces. lt will be seen that botlilevers 22 and 36 have a. to and fro movement in upright lanes substantiallv parallel.' and that both tcnd in lengthwise relation to the biglits of wire as held in the machine.
For the purpose of holding the two parallel bights of the wire in fixed position for the twisting operation, there are provided two wire holding jaws or wire hol-ders projecting outward from the forward edge orn the base and having narrow slots therein to receive the wires. These holding jaws are located on either side of the twisting pinion l0 and suitably spaced therefrom. The holding jaws ll and l2 located on the right out the pinion lO, looking from the rear ot the machine, are provided by a tubular inember 43 rigidly liz-red in and projecting `from the front edge wire receiving slots s'l-'l and 45. The tubular member i3 is utilized to provide not only the holding jaws el and Ll2 but also part the cutter to be presently described. l5 and 47 are the other holding jaws projecting from the trent edge of the hase. They provide the wire holdingslot 48 in alignment with the slots and 45. These slots are in alignment with ien l0 when the latter is at rest in norma position.
49 Vis a rotatable cutter consisting of a cyiindrical member fitting in the tubular ineinber 43 and projects at the rear beyond that part ot th base in which this tubular meinber is fixed, see Fig. 9. It is provided on its rear end with a crank arm 50 provided with a pin 5l which serves to limit the backward movement of the arm by striking against thc upper surface of the base. A spring 52 bears against the pin 5l to hold the arm in its noi'- mal backward position. rEhe upper half of the cylindrical cutter is cut away at its front end to provide the cutting edge 53 permit the reception of the wires in the slots Lletand 45, as shown more clearly in Fig. 9.
the slot ofthe twisting pinand to of the baseand provided with The cutting edge 58 or" the cut-t r iscut away i at its rear to provide a recess 5st so that only the forward wire will be severed when the cutter is actuated. The cutter is arranged to be operated at tlieend oir the twisting operation. F or this purpose, the ratchet wheel 2l carries a pin 55 which takes under the end of the cutter arm 50 at the end oi the twistof tensioninlr twisting and cutting a wire encircling a Ypackage,,the tensioned wire is lett in the slotsV of the wire holders land twisting pinion, thereby holding Vthe machine At'irmly down` upon the paclnige.V Prior to the pres ent invention there hasheen no satisfactory fi. l. 0
means in machines ofthis same Ageneral character for disengaging the tied and tensioned Wire from the machine and this could only be accomplished by much exertion on the part of the operator with accompanying` loss of time.
The present invention overcomes this` difliculty by providing means for automatically disengaging the' tied and `tensioned Wire from the machine by ejecting it from the holding and twisting slots. This is done immediately after the cutter has been operated and Without' any appreciable ei'l'ort on the part ofthe operator and with no loss vof time. ln carrying out this partf of the invention there are provided two thrust rods 56 and 57 which slide to and fro in apertures formed in the base on either side of the twisting pinion, l0. 58 is another thrust rod which slides'on the outei` side of the holding jaw i6 or' Within a recess formed in this aw may be noted in Figs. l and 2. The rear ends of these thrust rods are secured to and carried by a cross-bar 59 provided With a pin 60 which enters a cani member 62. Cam member 62 has an inner tubular portion 63 sleeved on the shaftli at the rear of lever 22. lt is held in normal position by any suitable means such as a coiled spring 64, one end of which is secured in the cam member 62 and the other end of which is secured in the cap 6 of the bearing bloclr A nut 65, threaded on the shaft il, holds theY tubular member 62 in position against lever 22. Cam member 62 is rotated on the s iaft l by means of lever 2a. For tais purpose the lever is provided With a pavvl 66, having` a spring` 67, and the toe of the pawl is arranged to engage a lug 68 on the periphery of cam member 62 Whenever lever is sufliciently depressed, or pulled toward the operator as he stands on the right side of the machine, as shown in Fig. 5. rlhis downward movement of lever 22 and rotation of cam r nber 62 moves forward the thrust rods 56, 5T and 58 so that their forward end 1will bear forcibly against the 'yvire and eject it from the holding and twistingl slots, thereby disengaginga the-Wire from the machine. llihenthe thrust rods have reached the limit of their forward'movement, a continued downward pressure of the lever 22 brings the heel 69 of pawl 66 against a trippingstud 70 secured to the base, thereby disengaging the pawl from lug 68 and permitting cam member 62 to be rotated by its spring bach to normal position. This return movement of the cam memberreturns the thrust rods to their rearward or normal position in Which they are stopped by the pin 60 striking one end of the slot 6l. Thrust rod 58 slides on the lower part of the base and against the recessed side of the holding jaw 41:6.
Referring to vFigs. l and 2, it Will be noted that the jaiv l? is recessed to such an extent that it receives therewithin vpractically the full Width ofthe thrust rod 58.V As so positioned in the recess this thrust rod lies directly above the active part `of holding jaw 47, and cooperates to a slight extent With jaw 47' as will later be explained to hold the Wire from slipping through the machine duringthe tensioning operation. ln such preferrer construction jaw i6 functions only to guide thrust rod 58 and to act as a reinforcing support therefore. rllhe actual constructions of these parts may be variously variedwvithout changingtheir functions. For instance, the Width of j aw 4:6 may be greatly decreased and the Width of the thrust rod materially increased, and the catch or retaining' device 8O positioned Within the structure of the thrust rod thereby being protected against being jammed or broken off. Such variations inthe structures of these parts have been made and have been found to be very satisfactory in use.
The forward end of thrust rod 58 is provided With a recess 7l preferably a right angle recess as shown in Fig. 8. The bights of the Wire they are inserted in the machine are received Within this recess 'Z1 and substantially of the upset head 74e on the end of the Wire (see Figs. l and 2) is received against the side of the thrust rod 58; the side of the jaw i7 r \ceivino only a small proportion of the head as may be noted by reference to 8, l0, ll and l2. V/'hen the tensiongig operation takes place the head 74 is dra-Wn tight against the side of the thrust rod and if the tension is too great the head becomes ainmed in the right angle recess 71 and possibly arrainst the top of jaw el?. The movement or the thrust rod 58 in assisting to eject the Wire from the machine is such that itY merely passes over the top of jaw l? until the Wire is carried beyond the end of thatfjawv and the Wire then, in released position, falls or snaps down on to the pacha-ge by reason of I taut condition. lt will be seen that with this type of construction, i. e., Where the assi sting` ejector or thrust rod receives and holds the head of the vvire, that `there may be any amount of jamming of the Wire head but no specially exerted force is required to moveic out of its holder for the holder moves until the Wire is free to fall to the container'or package. Thus there is no movement of the jammed headV relative to its main holding y formed of uniform depth or height throughout its length so that it Will receive any portions of the Wire except the upset portion. rlhus the Wires may be inserted into the machine infanylcareless manner so long); as theV down in normal position by any 482 passes under the pivot 8l. .T'Vhen upset port-ion which later bears against rod 58 is on one side of the rod.
lllhen the tensioning operation taires place the upset portion is drawn into contact with the rod 58 which may be considered as the movable member or movable portion ot the compoundineans. is will be noted the jaw (i7 is a projection from the base l and may be considered as the other portion of the compound holding means. Normally thev recess Tl is over the top of the stationary member or jaw and due to the movement of rod 58 these parts are rearranged so that the wires are carrierV to release position. lt will be 'f noted in this-connection that retaining catch form of a finger having its torwarf. surface inclined, as shown, and 'termed a a latch 89 secured by means ot' a pvot on the ejector member 58. rEhe latch o i means exemplified by a` spring wire forward end oit which enters a per' in the. latch 80, and the rear end obears upon the basel. rl`his spring i ation n'liic wires 76 and 77 are adjusted in position in the holding` slot 48 between the wire-holding jan-'s 4G and 47, they are pushed against the front inclined surface ot the retaining device' which rises in response to this pressure and permits the wires to enter the :toi-med slot. rlie retaining device then returns to normal position under pressure et its spring 82 to maintain the wires in place. vWhen the ejector member moves tornarci,` the retaining device 79 is carried Ytoiwvard beyond the end ot the jaw 4:7.A It thus automatically moves out oi' its normal retaining position by the moven ent of the ejector member 58,
l but it is not raised vertically in respect to the. wire held by the thrust rod 58 and jaw el?.
ln'Fig. l0, ejector member 88 takes the place ot ejector member 58. Ejector member 83 occupies the same position as does ejector member 58, but the former is pivotally mounted at its rear end on one end ot the cross'bar 59. Its front end'has integrally formed thereon the retaining device 8ssimilar toretainino device 79. A. serine' 85 acts 21 i to yieldingly hold the ejector member down on the oase with the re ing device 8d normally in retaining position. rlhe retaining device 8% moves out ot its retaining position with the forward movement of the ejector member 83 in the same way as does the retaining device 79.
Y In Fig. 11the retaining device 86 has the same location and structure as retaining devices 7 9 and 84.. VRetaining device` 86, however, is formed integrally with the latch 87 piii'otally mounted by means of pivot pin 88 on the base l, or at the rear ot holding jaw i6 which projects -from the base. The latch 87 has an inclined rear surtace 89 against which works a. pin 90 carried by ejector member 58. A spring 91 bearing against the rear end of latch 87 holds the retaining device in its normal retaining position. In this case, when the ejector 58 moves forward, pin 90 strikes inclined surface 89 and lifts the retaining device upward out of its retaining position.
ln Fig. 12, the. retaining device 92, andv located like the other retaining devices just described, is formed integrally with the latch '98 pivotally mounted on pivot pin 94 carrier by ejector member 58. A spring 95 secured to ejector member 58 bears under a pin 96 on the latch 98 to hold the retaining device in 'its normal retaining position. 97 is a. pin -lixedk on the base l, or the rear end ot holding jaw 46, and it takes against the inclined surface 98 on latch 98 when the eject r member 58 is moved forward and lifts the retaining device 92 upward and out of its retaining position. lf desired a latch having a retaining device may be mounted on one or bot-h of the ejectorrmembers 56 and 57. ln the drawings such a' latch 99 is shown mounted on the forward end of ejector member 56. It has the form of the forward end oflatch 8O of Fig. 8 and its shank enters a slot in the end ot-'member 56 and is therein pivoted on a horizontal pin. lt hangs in retaining Yposition by gravity and acts in the same manner as latch 80. lt will be noted that. in all of these various arrangements of the retaining device, it lautomatically moves out of its retaining position bya moving part of the machine which,'in
the instances shown, is the ejector.
lt will be noted that the lever 22 and cam piece 62 constitute power means for operatingthe ejector. It will also be noted'that, afterthe ejector has been operated and then returned to normal position upon the depression of lever 22 and tripping of pawl 66, the ejector is thereupon locked in normal position and lever 22 is locked in its lowermost position by locking bolt 25 which has already entered recess 27 to lock the twisting gears, and neither of these elements can be moved until bolt 25 is retracted. The locking of the ejector in normal position makes certain that it will be in its proper place for the next operation. The lever 22, when locked in its lowermost position, affords a convenient'immovable handle for carrying the machine from place to place.'
shaped (ill The operation of the machine is` as follovvs. The machine is placed upon the package or box 72; to be Wireftiedin they position shown in l. The opcratom standingen the right side of the n iachine,l takes a Wire 73, and inserts one end thereof into the formed slots and twisting slot of pinion 10. The wire is provided at one end with a h dl 74 to bear against the thrust, rod 58,A jgaW 47 which provide the slet` 48. The wire is then; passed? ar l; the package or box; 72; and again tlirongh the` holding` and twisting slots and its free end 7 is engage-d in the tension head 3L This positions the two overlapping bights 7G and 77 in the holding and tw" ting slots with the bight 76 at the back ci ie slots and directly above the recess 54 of the cutter, see Fig. 9. The Opelator grasps lever 3G,` with his right hand and lever 22 with his left hand and cscillates lever 3,6 to and from him so to rotate the tension head and thercgb-y tension the wire about the package g; head 7 4 holdingits end of the wire securely inthe machine;k Lever 36 should be escillated near its extreme forward position so thatat the end of the tensioning operation it may be depressed against lever 28 of the locking device, as shown, in Fig. 2, to retract locking),` holt 25 and unlock the twisting devices. rlhe operator then oscillates lever until the twistingl gear 9V and its shaft 4 have made yone complete revelation, whereupon locking bolt 25. snaps. into its recess 27 and arrests the twistingoperation and again locks the twisting devices in normal posi-V tion. Gear 9 and pinion l@ are so proportioned that one rotation of gear 9v produces three rotations of' pinion l() se that twisting slot 1S of pinion l0 is baclr in its initial position the moment locking bolt 2:5. enters recess 27. Justbefore the completion of the twisting operation, pin on ratchet wheel 2i engages cutter arm 50 to rotate cutter 49.V This cutting action is so timed that it is cornpleted substantially simultaneously with the return cf pinion l0 te its initial position and the releclrinp; of shaft ,4 by bolt25. Act the same time pin 55 clears Cutter varm 50 and the cutter is returned by' its spring to normal position. Fig'. 3 shows the parts in the position they occupy just before, and Fig; 4 shows them just after, the cutting operation has been complet-ed. By reference to Fig. 9, it will be seen that, by reason of recess 54, the cutter does not act upon bight 76 b-ut onlyl upon bight 77 .vhereby that end of the wire secured to the tension head 3l is cut oil. Lever 22 is oscillated most conveniently -between its upright position and its horizontal position farthest from the operator.
Y The completion of the twisting and cutting operations is indicated to the operator by the sound of the bolt 25 snapping into the recess Q7. At this time the wire is under tension and the twisted. bights thereof, as
they lie in the twisting and holding slotsV7` are binding thek machine firmlyl down uponthe package and it is necessary tofree the machine. from the Wire. The opera-torac,-l com ali-shes this result by pulling lever 252 tov- Wareshiim, whereupon air/i 66,V by en "aging pin G8 on cam slee-ve- (s, retates this: sleeve ly drives thri `t 5,6, the twisted urnel bights` Vso that e instantaneously ejected froml the be lifted from the package; for the next. eps
eration,
The wir@ tc be emplcvcd this machine may be of any suitable size er hind or e so. longl as it may be threaded into the particular size of machine and permit the tensicning` to be properly performed. It has been found by experience that Vthe hiQst eff iicient operation of any Wire tying machine is obtained. when the end of the `Wire which is anchored `duringtensioning is held in a in nner that permits easy ejection afterthe twisting operation. Hertcfore the. usual method of anchoring one end of the wire is to have it positioned between two jaws which draw closer and closer together the pull on the wire incre-aies thereby pinching` the wire tol a greater and greater deg-ree. Usually the engaging surfacesof the jaws are of cam shape and are provided with burrs which are forced into the.y Wire as the tensioning increases. This type of anchor ing means requires that there be a special attachment associated with the machine to open the jaws so. as; to withdraw the machine from the hire after the twisting operation has been completed.
The wire tying machine herein described is constructed in an improved manner which provides for an improved means for anchoring one end of the Wire to allow proper tensioning, and after-the completion of the twistT ing,- operation permits the wire 'te be quickly and easily ejected from the machine. This improved means for anchoring,` does not re.- quire a special attachment to the machine for freeing the anchored endof the wire, `nor does it require a special or separate operaf tion to move the Wire out of the machine.
The wire preferably employed is provided with the upset portion or head 74 on `one end or is other-.wise deformed to. prevent its being pulled through the machine during the tensioning operation. This upsetting may ics lil)
bereadily accomplished, or the wire may be purchased in the open market. rlhis improved machine was developed and is used withwire of this nature, and by'this means the efiiciency of the machine is greatly increased as well as permitting a great saving in time during its operatic-n. Any particular shapeor type of upset head may be made but I prefer that the upsetting be at the end of the wire and to have the head in the shape as shown t 74 in Fig. '2. It will be seen that the end of the wire with the upset head may be quickly threaded betweenthe thrust rod 58 and jaw l? and that it is anchored in posit-ion by reason of the co-operation of the head With the rod and jaw without in any way becoming jammed or pinched so that it is not easily ejected after the twisting operation has been completed.
It will be seen that when the operator takes his position at the right side of the mL chine for the insertion of a wire in the holding and twisting slots, it is unnecessary for him to move from Vthat position throughout the entire operation of the machine. Standing in this position he is facing the operating levers 'and oscillates lirst one and then the other to and from him in upright parallelv planes and parallel with the wire encircling the package. Thus he is able to apply his power with the least exertion and with the greatest. convenience, at the same time holding the machine steady by means of the levers firmly grasped in his two hands. It will be noted that lever 22 is located substantially in the middle of the machine and its steadying effect is therefore greatly enhanced. After the tensioning operation has been completed lever 36 is employed for steadying purposes while twisting handle Z2 performs its operating functions. lit will also be seen that by disposing lever 28 of the locking device in the `path of movement of tensioning` lever 36, the locking device is automatically disengaged by the tensioning lever upon the completion of the 'tensioning operation. And it will further be seen that after the operator has positioned the wire about the packages and grasped the levers in his two hands, that he is able to complete the entire operation without taking his hands from the levers. These various advantages enable the operator to work the machine with increased speed and with greater convenience and ease than has heretofore been attainable in machines of this general character.
The term wire, as used in this specification, includes not only the ordinary round wire of commerce but also flat banding which, in this art, is also known as flat wire.
lVhile the various features of the invention have been shown and described in what is considered to be their best form and arrangement, it is to be noted that these features may be variously modified in structure and arrangement without departing from the invention. This applies particularly to the ejector whose automatic arrangement is believed to be broadly new. It is also to be notedthat manyof the features of the invention are adaptable for use in a power driven as well as in a hand-operated machine.
