Description
July 7, 1931- G. w. Nar-WELL 1,813,076
BRUSH Filed April 15, 1929 attorno@ Patented July 7, 1931 UNITED. STATES GEORGE W. NEWELL, OF BURLINGTON, WISCONSIN BRUSH application med Aprn 15,
This invention relates to tooth brushes and more particularly to brushes for use in cleaning dental plates.
An object of the invention is to produce a brush which is constructed along scientific lines so as to facilitate the cleaning of all parts of a dental plate.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction,
arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more full described and particularly pointed out 1n the appended claim, reference being had to the accompan ing drawings forming a part of this specificatlom-and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a brush embodymg one form of the invention;
Figure 2fis a side view of the brush"of Fi re 1; Figures 3, 4, 5 and 6 are cross sectional views on the lines 3 3, 4 4, 5 5 and 6 6,
respectively, of Figure .1; f
Figure 7 is a side view of a brush embodying another form of theinvention; and
Figure 8 is a cross sectional view on the line 8 8 of Figure 7.
Referring to Figures 1 to 6, inclusive, of the drawings, the reference numeral 1 desig' nates a handle of any suitable material.
The handlel is of the contour shown and has a U-shaped head portion at one endthereof, as viewed at the left of Figures 1 and 2. vThe central portion of the handle is rectan` gular in cross section, as shown in Figure 6,
and the right hand end is circular in cross section, as shown in Figure 5.
Both the convex surface 2 and concave surface 3 of the U-sha ed head portion of the handle are provide with bristles, these bristles being secured to the handle in any Well known manner. The bristles on the convex surface` are designated at 4 and those on the concave surface at 5. As best shown in Figure 2, the vlower surface of the U-shaped head portion is curved upwardly so as to provide. a surface of somewhat spherical shape. This surface is completely covered by the bristles 4 and is of such a shape that the radius of curvature of the bristles is approximately equal to that of the y 1929. Serial N0. 355,113.
intermediate or central portion of a dental plate. The bristles 4 are thus -Well adapted for brushing the underside of the plate.
The contour of the bristles 5 is of considerably less diameter than that of the bristles 4 so as to adapt this portion of the lbrush to be used for simultaneously cleaning ythe sides and the top of teeth on a dental plate.
Adjacent the head portion of the brush, the handle is inclined slightly upward as shown at 6. This part of the handle serves as a guide-way and causes a slight change in the angular relation between the teeth and the bristles 5 as the teeth are moved horizontally with respect to the v brush.
The right yhand end portion 7 of the brush, shown in Figures 1 and 2, is curved over an arc of approximately 90 as shown, and is provided with bristles 8 extending over the entire curved portion and completely covering the sides as well as the end thereof. The bristles on this end of the brush are so disposed as to t into and properly clean the depressions between the teeth and the central or intermediate portion of a dental late.
The modified orm of Figures 7 and 8 is similar to that of the preferred embodiment of the invention described above except that the right hand portion 10 of the handle is rectangular in cross section and fthe bristles 11 thereof are disposed on only two opposite sides thereof.
It will be seen that brushes constructed along the lines described above are well adapted to clean all parts of a dental plate. i
vU-shaped vbrush head being offset with respec't. to the handle, and a set of bristles projecting outwardly from the outer wall of the U-shaped head, the inner wall of the U-shapledv head also being adapted to'carryl ing a set of inwardly directed bristles.
In witness whereof, I hereto aix my signature.
. GEORGE W. NEWELL.
