Description

G. WRIGHT.
STOVE PIPE.
Patented Aug. 22, 1.876.
NJ'ETERS. PHOTD LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WRIGHT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEM E NT IN STOVE-PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,297, dated August 22,1876 application filed February 25, 1876.
, Stove-Pipes; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and accurate description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures marked thereon, making a part of this this specification.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings represents a single length or joint of stovepipe constructed according to my improved.
method, showing the manner of forming the longitudinal joint of the same. Fig. 3 represents several joints of said pipe packed together for transportation. Fig. 2 represents a manner of fastening or looking the same together after it has been adjusted or fitted to its place. v
My improvement consists, mainly, in so constructingmy improved stove or other similar pipe as to give to the same adj ustability, while at the same it is made to keep its place as stove-pipe after its parts have been adjusted. And my improved method of construction has this further advantage over the ordinary methodsthat is, many joints of the same can be packed together in the space of a single joint, when it is desirable to transport the same.
In the construction of said pipe I prepare the sheet of iron for making the longitudinal joining or joint by bending one edge of the the sheet is pressed together in the form represented in Fig. 1. In giving the sheet the cylindrical form by means of the rolls, I cause the edges of the pipe longitudinally to pass by each other so that the tendency is for the male and female edges of the pipe to unite and remain firmly together.
When thus formed and brought together I perforate them both, as shown at b, withasmall punch, so as to admit of afastener, c, to bind them together, as shown in Fig. 3. This fastener may be of any suitable form, and may be placed in the pipe at any time, although usually at the time the pipe is to be set up.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and construction of my said improvement in the manufacture of iron or other similar pipe for stoves and other similar purposes, I will proceed to specify what I claim as my invention, and what I desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A stove-pipe in which the longitudinal seam is formed by bending in a 2 form one edge of the sheet, while the opposite edge remains straightand slides into the groove thus formed, the two edges being fastened by pins or their equivalents, substantially as described.
GEORGE WRIGHT.
