STARTER ATTACHMENT FOR AUTOMOBILES Filed Nov. 2. 1927 all g n/Mm zwwawa W41 w, EQ/w} Patented June 30, 1931 UNITED STATES ALEXANDER C. MCCURDY, F TOWSON, MARYLAND STARTER ATTACHMENT FOR AUTOMOBILES Application filed November 2, 1927. Serial No. 230,467.
This invention relates to automobiles and has special reference to a starter controlling attachment for automobiles.
It sometimes happens that an automobile engine chokes or stalls on a hill or in traffic. In such cases, 1n order to start the eng1ne,
it is usual for the operator of the car to apply the emergency brake and then remove his foot from the brake pedal. Then he releases the clutch and puts his foot on the starter button. I
The principal object of the present invention is to render it unnecessary for either the emergency brake to be thrown in or the operator to remove his foot from the foot brake and yet to enable the starter button to be depressed for closing the starting motor circuit. 7
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel de tails of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing the View represents a section through the foot and dash boards of an automobile showing the attachment in position.
In the present embodiment of the invention and in the showing in the drawing the foot board is indicated at 10 and the dash board at 11. Through this foot board passes the shank 12 of the circuit closing plunger for the starting circuit, this plunger being normally held projected above the board 10 by the spring 13. The plunger 12 is provided as usual with a head or button 14 which is known as the starter button. The attachment herein used comprises a sleeve 15 which is fitted in a suitable opening in the dash 11 and through this sleeve extends a rod 16 the upward movement of which is limited by the nuts and washer 17 as shown in the figure. On the lower end of the rod 16 is mounted a hollow cap 18 having a peripheral flange 19 which may be engaged by the foot if desired. The rod 16 projects for some distance through and above the dash 11 and has on its upper end a knob 20 for manual operation.
\Vith this construction whenever the engine stalls and it is inconvenient to remove the foot from the brake the starting circuit may be closed bysimply pushing down on the head 20 which will effect depression of the circuit closing plunger 12. Obviously, if desired the foot may be pressed on the flange 19.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and fo the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed. 1
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
An automobile starter circuit closing attachment comprising a rod alined with the starter button and extending through the automobile dash, a hollow cap on said rod adapted to fit the button of a starter circuit closer, a head on the upper end of the rod above the dash, means for limiting upward movement of said rod, and a flange extendg0 ing peripherally from the cap for engagement by the foot of an operator.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ALEXANDER G. MGCURDY.
