This invention is an improvement in conltinuous beaters for paper making, and more i struction of screens for B stock.
One of the primary objects of the invention is to provide a screen, forming in effect Aa part of the tub wall, and continuous with said wall.
Another` object is to provide a screen having openings of a character such that they vare not readily clogged by the flowing pulp.'
Another object is the provision of "a delicotor for directing the stock through the screen, and means -for adjusting the deliector to the required inclination w'ith respect to the flow of stock.
Another object is the provision of mechanism for receiving the pulp as it passes through the screen, and for discharging it into a plurality of chambers, vwith means for independently regulating the quantity flowing into each chamber.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists inv the construction and novel combination of parts fully described hereinafter, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed outin the claims appended hereto, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within thc scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit ofthe invention.

In the present embodiment of the invention, a tub 1 is provided of usual construction, being composed of a plurality of sections la, the sections havingtheir edgesabutted, as

Another deflect'or plate 12 is hinged to the mid-feather, as at 413; and this deflector is adapt-ed to beadjusted as-regards its inclination to the iow of the, 75 pulp, by means of a rod 14, connected at one end with the deilector, and extending through a bearing 15 on the tub wall.
A hand-wheel 16 is threaded onto the outer end of the rod, and by means of the wheel the angle of the deflector with respect to the midieather, may be adjusted. The gates have rack edges, which are engaged by pinions 20, journaled on tha-.90 chamber wall. The openings 18 give access to chambers 21, which have outlets 22 for the pulp. By means of the gates 19, the stock from the chamber 17 may e thrown into one chamber 21, or into both, in equal proportionsgf or in such proportions as may be elected. v When both gates are closed, the iiow ofv stock from the chamber 17 is stopped, and gradual-` ly fllling up in the vtub to the level of the beater, stops the operation thereof. r

The stock is beaten up by the beater-roll and its cooperating bedplate, and when beaten to the proper fineness, iiows out continuously through the openings in the screen, while new stock is fed into the tub continuously, as needed. y
The valves which control the flow from chamber 17 to chamber 21, are vertically movable gates. One or both of the gates is left open all of the time, so as to make the operation of the beater continuous and not intermittent. The stock is continually fed in and continually drained out through the extractor and through the gates or valves. The purpose of the gates is to enable the stock to be thrown to two machines by leaving both gates open, or to either machine by closing one of the gates and leaving the other open.
The gates are so placed that' when both are wide open, about equal quantities of stock go to each paper machine.
If it isv desired to put two-thirds of the stock to one machine, and one-third to the other, one of the gates is partly closed, enough to pass the desired amountvof stock for the one machine, the -remainder going to the other machine. The stock is extracted through the extractor and goes to the paper machines, as fast as it is fed in to the beater.
What is claimed as new is" 1. In a continuous beating machine, the
wall, a mid-feather, a beater-roll and cooperating bed-plate, and a back-fall inrear ofthe beater-roll, of a screen interposed in the wall and forming al part thereof, and arranged rearwardly of the back-fall, said screen being curved transversely and so arranged that the pulp flowing over the back-fall impinges against the inner face of the screen, and a vertical delector supported by the mid-feather in angular position for deflecting the pulp horizontally toward the screen.
2. In a continuous beating machine, the combination with a tub having an enclosing wall, a mid-feather,fa beater-roll and cooperating bed-plate, and a back-fall in rear of the beater-roll, of a screen interposed in the wall and forming a part thereof, and arranged rearwardly of the back-fall, said screen b'eing curved transversely and so arranged that the pulp flowing over the back-fall impinges against the inner face of the screen, and a deiector sulpported by the mid-feather for delecting t e pulp toward thegscreen, said deiiector being adjustable to vary the inclination thereof with respect to the plane of the mid-feather. g
3. In a continuous beating machine, the

4. In a continuous beating machine, the combination with a tub having anenclosing wall, a mid-feather, a beater-roll and cooperating bed-plate, and a baclr-fall in rear of the beater-roll, of a screen interposed in the Wall and forming a part thereof, and arranged rearwardly of the back-fall, a chamber outside the tub and enclosing the screen into which the pulp flows from the screen,
said chamber having a plurality of valve controlled ports, and a separate receiving chamber for the pulp from each port.
5. A pulp-beater of the class described, comprising a tub having an enclosing wall, a mid-feather, a beater-roll and cooperating bed-plate, and a back-fall rearward of the beater-roll, a screen rearward of the backfall, a chamber enclosing the outer area of the screen and receiving pulp therefrom, a plurality of separate secondary chambers adjacent the one first named, with a port communicating between the first chamber and each secondary chamber, and an adjustable gate for each port to regulate relative amounts v of pulp flowing to 'the respective secondary chambers, whereby pulp supply to a plurality of paper machines may be independently regulated.
