CASING COVER LOCKING DEVICE Filed Sept. 1, 1928 4. A ATTOPNE) Patented June 23, 1931 UNETED s'mrss @FFECE HERMAN noLLEarrrr, JR, or nrvnnrron, new annsny, assrsnon re vrcron'ratxrne macrrmncoraranr, A conronerron or new annsav CASING-COVER, LOCKER G DEVICE Application filed'Septemlc-er 1, 1928. Serial No. 303,418.
My invention relates to a device or mechanism for securing or retaining a casing cover or casing section in elevated position.
In accordance with my invention, a receptacle carried by a movable casing section comprises means for preventing movement of said section toward casing-closing position.
Further in accordance with my invention, the cover of-a portable talking machine or phonograph casing is retained in elevated position by means comprised in or movable with a holder or receptacle for talking machine or phonograph records.
Further inaccordance with my invention, a receptacle or carrier for phonograph or talking machine records is pivoted to the cover of a phonograph or talking machine and is provided with a device for moving the same with respect to said cover, said device'comprising means for retaining said cover in an elevated position. 1
My invention resides in the apparatus and features of construction of the character hereinafter described and claimed.
For an illustration of one of the forms my invention may take, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which 2'- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a casing having associated therewith a device forretaining the casing cover in an elevated position. 4
Figures 2 and 3 are vertical sectional views, with parts omitted, of the structure shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 4l4 of Figure 2, and looking in the direction of the arrow. J
Figure 5 is an enlarged elevational view of a part of the cover'locking device.
In the form of my invention herein illus trated, there is shown a portable phonograph or talking machine which comprisesa cabinet or casing C having a body or base 1 andv a hinged or movable lid or cover 2.
The body comprises a horizontal member or motor-board 3 upon which 'is disposed or which supports suitable instrumentalities for the production offsound; As illustrated, the memberv 3 supports a turntable for the reception of a phonograph or talking machine record R with which coacts the stylus or nee die of a sound box 5, or equivalent, carried by an oscillatable tone arm or member 6 by which sound waves are directed beneath the member 3 where they pass through suitable horn structure, not shown, save for the terminal portion thereof which comprises, at therear or the body 1,the-spaced side walls 7, 7 having a curved rear wall 8 therebetween. From the aforesaid horn structure, the sound waves pass upwardly through an opening in the member 3 of nearly the same width as the body 1 and with the cover 2 occupying the position illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, said sound waves are thereby reflected or directed to some extent at least.
The lid or. cover 2 forms a chamber of substantial depth for the reception of a carrier or container 9 adapted as illustrated in Figure 1, to receive a plurality of the records 1%. Spaced from the top wall of the cover 2, Figure 3, is a flange or shelf 10 movable with said-cover 2 and having plurality oflugs or members 11 projecting therefrom. Secured to each side wall of the container 9 is a memher or bracket 12, each pivoted to one of the aforesaid lugs 11 which are properly spaced with this end in view.
Formed integrally, preferably, with one of the brackets 12 is a member 13 carrying, adjacenti-ts end-removed fromthe container 9, a laterally projecting pin, 14 received in a slot 15 formed in aplate or'member 16 suitably secured, in the example shown, to the curved wall 8. i
Referring particularly to Figure 5, the slot 15 of plate lfi'comprises a portion 15a substantially concentric with respect to the pivot of the cover 2, a second portion 15b eccentrically disposed with respect to said pivot of the cover 2, and a third portion 150 forming a depression or hole into which the pin 14 may bemoved to releasably hold the cover 2' in elevated position.
A phonograph or talking machine of the character herein described, ordinarily, is portable and may be carried from place to placeas the occasion may demand. Accordingly the body 1 may be supplied with a handle, not shown, and .a locking device, not
shown, may be ut1hzed for temporarily retaining the cover 2 locked to the body 1, Figure 3.
Assuming that the parts occupy the position illustrated in Figure 3, after release of the aforesaid locking device, the cover 2 may be manually moved to the position shown in Figures 1 and 2. In so doing, the pin 14 first moves within the concentric portion a of slot 15 and, consequently, the container 9 moves with the cover 9- while maintaining substantially the relative position with respect thereto illustrated in Figure 3. During continued upward movement of the cover 2, pin 14: moves within the eccentric portion 15b of slot 15 and the container 9 is swung relative to said cover 2 into substantially the position illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, whereby the records It may be removed or replaced in the container 9 as desired. Eventually, during continued upward movement of the cover 2, pin 14L drops or passes into the depression 150 of slot 15 and, as a result, the cover 2 and container 9 are retained or locked in the position illustrated in Figures 1 and 2,
- closed position, it is only necessary to exert slight manual pressure on the container 9 moving the same slightly toward the cover 2. In so doing, the pin 14 is removed from the depression 150 of slot 15 and, therefore, the various parts are free to return, under the influence of gravity, to the position illustrated in Fig. 3. During initial return move ment, the eccentric portion 15b of slot 15 promptly withdraws the container 9 and the thereby-carried records within the cover 2 so that said container 9 does not contact with the turntable 4: when the cover 2 reaches its fully closed position.
Before the cover 2 is closed, the tone arm 6 should be positioned substantially parallel with the side walls of the body 1. When thus arranged, the cover 2 may be freely moved to closed position since, as illustrated, the receptacle 9 is disposed at one side of the cover 2 to provide a chamber therein for the reception of the tone arm 6.
