This invention relates to improvements in switches for electrical control, being particularly directed to a device capable of application in radio reception mechanisms.
Broadl it is an object of this invention to provide or a novel form of switch, of the comprising of a crank actuated contacting member, enclosed in an insulating medium, as for example a casing formed of a phenolic condensation product,
which contact member is displaceable angularly on a bearing surface, pivoted upon the actuation crating the crank.
Still further, it is an object of this invention, to provide for a novel nection crank control member, and the movable contact making member, comprising of a resilient element, attachable to the said crank, and said contact member, the said reto be mounted at the respective extremities of the crank and the contact making member, so that the contact making member, may be readily displacid about its pivot, upon actuation of said cran upon which it is of the control opv Still further, it is an object of thisinvent10n to provide for a novel form of snap switch, comprising of a minimum of elements, positioned within the casing, and which elements are assembled in association with one another, through separable interconnections, whereby assembly of the constituent elements of the switch may be carried out with a minimum of time and a maximum of efficiency.
These and other advantages, capabilities and features of the invention will appear from the subjoined detailed description of one specific embodiment therefor illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation in section of the device;
Fi ure 2 is a front View of the device, looking a iong lines 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a rear view of the device; Figure 4 is a front elevation of the interior of one half of the device, with the cover removed;
Figure 5 is a front elevation of the intetype of interconrior of the other half of cover removed; and
Figure 6 is a plan view in section along lines 66 of Figure 2.
Referring to the reference characters in the drawing, numerals 10 and 11 represent two hollow associated shells, each of which forms half of the complete enclosing casing, the said shells being fabricated of a phenolic condensation product.
Referring particularly, to the structure in Figure 1, the casing is mounted to the rear of the front panel 12, of a radio receiver through the medium of a single mounting support.
The single mounting support comprises a hub or bearing member 13, fixed to the top of shell 11, at one end 14, of the shoulder as by means, of being molded directly into the shell in the fabrication thereof, the shoulder being threaded as at 15, and passing through aperture 16, formed in the front panel, there being provided a nut 17, to lock both the shoulder and the casing to which it is fastened to the panel, by means of the cooperation of the interior threading of the nut, with the exterior threads of the shoulder 13.
A spindle 18 is adapted to be carried for rotation Within the interior of the shoulder or hearing 13, which spindle has fastened at one end thereof, the knob control member 19, as by means of a set screw, and which spindle member has fastened at its other hollowed end, the vulcanized fiber crank member 20, through the upsetting or heading of the ears 21, of the spindle thereagainst, as shown in Figure 5. A Washer 22, is mounted on the spindle 18, so as to separate the crank from the inner top Wall of the shell 11,
On the spindle there is mounted as by riveting a projection or lug 23, having a grooved portion over which there is adapted to pass for connection one end or loop 24, of the spring member 25, the other end of which spring member is adapted to be fastened to the contact making member, as will be later described. A barrier positioned in shell 11, in the terrace section thereof, to prevent electrical contact or short circuiting between and through the contact the device with the or baiiie 26, is 7 making member, and the remaining elements of the mechanism.
In the shell member 10, there are positioned two terminals 27 and 28, comprising of threaded screws, which screws are adapted to pass through apertures 29 and 30, in the top of shell 10, the screws and washers associated therewith, being adapted to be molded directly into the shell 10, during the fabrication thereof, whereby the head 32 of terminal 27 is adapted to contact and fixedly position a unitary triple right angular flexible metallic strip 33, the end extremity of which rests against the inner end wall of the shell 10, in a groove formed in the hollowed interior of shell 10. The strip 33 is adapted to have cooperating therewith, the contact making member 34, which is mounted in the grooved portion 35, of the projection of terminal 28, within the shell 10, the enlarged head 36, of the terminal being formed at the extremity of said projection adjacent the groove in which the contact making member is pivoted, in order to restrain the contact making member from lateral displacement.
The contact making member as shown clearly in Figures 1, 4 and 5, comprises of an integral resilient metallic stamping, having one end portion 37, in the shape of an arrow, one side of which arrow is adapted to contact with the end extremity 33 of the fixed contact strip 33, and the other end of which contact making member comprises a projection 38, perpendicularly disposed with re spect to the remainder of the contact making element, and havin a grooved portion 39, therein, into which there is adapted to be positioned the loop 40, forming the second extremity of the sprin member 25. The contact making member lfias a central aperture 41, of a greater cross sectional area, than the head 36, formed on the fixed terminal 28, so as to be readily positioned in the grooved portion 35, of said projection, the contact making element, being always adapted however, to be disposed in said grooved portion 35, due to the action of the compression spring 25, urging it upwardly when the device is assembled, as is seen in Figures 1 and 4, whereby the surface of the contact making element, adjacent the lower section of I the aperture, as shown in dotted lines in Fig.

As shown in Figure 5, the displacement of the crank and the contact making member medium of the interconnecting elements, is controlled as to a degree, by the contact of the extremities 42 and 43, of the crank end with the side walls of the shell 11, whereby the arrow portion 37, of the contact making member 'is either urged against the end extremit 33" of the contact strip 33, when actuated in one direction by the crank upon rotation of the knob,
or is urged to the other side of shell 10, out
of contact with the fixed contact 33, upon the actuation of the cam member and the knob controlling the same in the opposite direction.
. As is obvious, circuit connections are made by the contact making member, between fixed contacts 27 and 28, when thecontact making member 34, is in position indicated in Figure 4., v
The screw and nut assembly 44 and 45, is used to unite the two shells l0 and 11, to form the completecasing and nuts 46 and 47, are adapted to fasten contacts for the exterior circuits to the contact members 27 and 28. I
As can be seen from the disclosure, the mechanism comprises a series of simple elements easily assembled, easily separated and easily displaced, and/or replaced, making possible'the efficient assembling and introducing a considerable simplicity of the structure over the prior type of switches.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Claims:
l. A switch comprising a casing, a plurality of fixed terminals extending therefrom, a fixed contact mounted in the casing, in electrical contact with one of said terminals, a movable contact pivoted on the other of said fixed terminals, a crank and resilient means interconnecting the crank with one extremity of said movable contact, and a spindle fixed to said crank, a knob for actuating said spindle, stop means for limiting the displacement of the said crank, said movable member, being displaceable about its pivot, into and out of contact with the fixed contact, upon the rotation of said spindle.
2. A switch comprising a casing, a plurality of fixed terminals positioned thereon, a fixed contact mounted in the casing in electrical contact with one of said terminals, a movable contact pivoted on the other of said fixed terminals, a crank member, rotatable within said casing, a 'knob interconnected with said crank for rotating the same, a projection on said crank, a projection at one end of said movable contact, resilient mear interconnecting the projections on the crank and on the movable contact, said crank being of such formation as to contact with the opposite walls of the casing, said movable contact member being displaceable to a degree proportionate to the displacement of the crank member, and a projection on said movable contact, the said projection being adapted to contact with the fixed contact, in order to make an electrical circuit connection upon displacement of the crank in one direction, said contact member adapted to be movable in the opposite direction, to break the electrical circuit when the crank is dis laced in a direction opposite to its original isplacement.

A switch comprising} a casing, a plurality of fixed terminals, positioned therein, one of said fixed terminals having a fixed contact plate mounted thereon, said fixed contact being shaped so is positioned adjacent one side wall of said casing, a movable contact member pivoted on the other. of said fixed terminals, a crank member mounted in said casing, a resilient member connecting one end of said movable contact with said crank, the other end of said movable contact being offset and adapted to contact with the extremity of the fixed contact late upon displacement in one direction t ereof, and wlth the opposite side n displacement in the opposite direction t ereof.
6. A switch comprising a casing, rality of fixed terminals, positioned therein, one of said fixed terminals havin a fixed ed contact plate being shaped so that one end therea crank operable and having a control knob at one that one end thereof b resilient member, to prevent the ating the crank member, said crank member 'being'formed so as to contact with the respective side walls of the casing, to limit its movement and the movement of the movable contact member.

A switch. comprising a casing, ity of fixed terminals extending therefrom, a ed contact mounted in physical contact with one of said terminals, a movable contact pivoted on the other ofsaid fixed terminals, a spindle journalled in said casing, and aving a control knob at one end thereof, and a crank at the other end thereof, a projection on said crank and a. projection formed on one end of said movable contact, a resilient connection positioned therebetween, whereby the rotation of said knob controls the displacement into and out of contact,of the free end of the movable contact with the xed contact.
8. A switch comprising a casing, a plurality "of fixed terminals extending therefrom, a fixed contact mounted in physical contact with one of said terminals, a movable con tact pivoted on the other of said fixed terminals, a spindle journalled in said casing, end there of, and a crank at the other end thereof, a projection on said crank and a projection formed on one end of said movable contact, a resilient connection positioned therebetween, whereby the rotation of said knob controls the displacement into and out of contact of the free end of the movable contact, with the fixed contact, and an insulated said spindle, and said physical and a pluralafiie plate, between electrical contact therebetween.
