GATES.
Patented Aug.15,1876.

Unrrnn STATES PATENT C'FFIG'E.
URIAH W. HARDY, OF ALBION, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 81,071, dated August 15, 1876; application filed May 27, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, URIAH W. HARDY, of Albion, county of Edwards and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Gate, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations of my improved gate, respectively in closed and open positions. Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical transverse sections of the same on lines 0 c and mm, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an inside view of the gatelocking post.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved farmgate that may be readily opened and closed by a person on horseback, and from the seat of a vehicle; and the invention consists of fulcrumed levers that extend alongside of the road, and operate by rods, bars, cords or chains a folding and weighting gate. A separately-pivoted latch-piece at the upper part of the gate locks into. the recessed post when the gate is lowered.
In the drawing, A represents the vertical supporting-post at one side of the road, and B the gate-locking post at the other side of the same. 0 is a'i'olding and weighted gate that is made of horizontal rails and pivoted cross-pieces, the intermediate pivots being so constructed as to pass through the horizontal rails and into the cross-pieces, but not through the same.
The upper horizontal piece is weighted at' the rear end in such a manner thatthe gate may be readily tilted, on being started, into vertical position, and carried back again into horizontal position for closing The gate 0 is guided by a staple, a, or other device along a quadrantal guide-rod, b, at the lower part of the main post A. The upper horizontal latch-piece D of the gate is connected, by parallel pivot-links d, with the gate, and carried into or released from the recess 0 of the end post B by the action of the raising and lowering mechanism.
The locking gate-post B has side guidepieces f, along which the gate is guided in its upward and downward motion.
The end of the latch-piece D is beveled to admit the ready entering and withdrawing of the latch. The latch-piece D is connected by means of a rigid rectangular elbow, g, and pivot-rod, bar, chain, or cord, 9, to the rear ends of the levers E, that are fulcrumed to an inclined top piece A of the main post A, and coupled at their rear ends by a link, 9 to jointly operate the gate.
The supporting cross-piece A is rigidly attached to post Aand securely braced to take up the strain exerted by the pivoted levers.
From the outer ends of the levers E are suspended ropes, rods, or chains 0', which are readily taken hold of by the person on horseback, or driver, to operate the gate.
The strain on the levers is transmitted by the rod 9 to the rigid elbow g of the latchpiece D, which is raised and strikes against the weight or stop.
The disposition of the intermediate raising and lowering apparatus between levers and latch-pieces is such that a pull on the outer end of either lover, when the gate is in closed position, produces, first, the unlocking of the gate, and then the drawing it up into vertical folded position alongside of supporting post A. When the gate rests in open position, a pull on either lever raises the latch-piece, and draws the gate down so that it passes into horizontal position. The pulling of the lever imparts, in connection with the weight, a certain momentum to the gate, so that the same tilts into a vertical folding position. A pull on the other lever, when the rider or the can riage has passed through the opened gate, exerts a reverse influence on the gate, and lowers the same into closed position. The latchpiece looks at the same time into the recessed opposite gate-post, so that the gate may be thus opened and closed in reliable and automatic manner, in connection with the raising and lowering of the same by the action of the person pullingthe levers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the tilting and folding gate, of the fulcruined levers E, the pivoted latch D, and the quadrantal guide, as and for the purpose specified.
URIAH W. HARDY.
