EDGE CONSTRUCTION FOR TABLE TOPS AND THE LIKE Filed June 18. 1928 Fredd, \S'clmutz dnozmq Patented June 16, 1931 unrrao STATES P NT men FRED A. SCHMITZ, or CANTON, OHIO, .ASSIGNOB, BY me ASSIGNMENTS, To nnrunuc STEEL CORPORATION, or YouNesTowN, onmnconroaanon or NEW JERSEY EDGE CONSTRUCTION son-TAB TorsfANn THE LIKE Application filed June 18,
This invention relates to a novel edge construction for desk and table tops and the like. An object of the invention is to provide an edge construction for desk and table tops, a consisting of a relatively small number of inexpensively manufactured and readily assembled parts, which will lend a neat and attractive appearance to the desk or table top.
Another object of the invention is to pro- 39 vide anedge construction for desk and table tops, which will be sturdy and rigid, though light in weight.
These and other Objects of the invention will become more readily apparent in the 15 course of the following description of the in vention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of one corner of a desk or table top, in which do the novel features of the present invention are embodied;
Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the desk or table top, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is an exploded ,view of the various 25 parts shown in Fig; 1.
Referrin more particularly to the drawings, the e ge construction includes a metal top plate 1 to the upper surface of which is secured, as by cementing or the like, a linoleum cover 2, provided with a beveled edge 3.
A Z-bar i, comprisihg a web 5 and legs 6 is secured, as by spot welding, to the lower surface of the top plate 1, near the edges thereof, and the web of this bar is provided at spaced intervals with holes 7 for the reception of screws 8.
A binding strip 9, preferably of brass or bronze, abuts the edges of the top plate 1, and consists of an inturned flange 10, a horizontal web 11, and 9. depending flange 12. The inturned flange 10 of the binding strip protects and binds the beveled edges 3 of the linoleum cover 2.
A channel retaining member 13 consisting of a web 14 and legs 15 and 16 is provided at spaced intervals with tapped plates 17, which are preferably secured as by welding or the like to the inner face of the web. The tapped holes 18 of these plates are in alignment with the holes 7 in the web of the Z-bar 4;.
into the tapped plates, and serving to retain 1928. "serial No. 286,094.
"Thevarious, parts are assembled as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the screws 8 serving to retain the channel retaining member 13 in clamping engagement with the binding strip 9.
Having described my invention, what 1 claim is:
*1. In an edge construction for table tops and the like, a top plate, a member secured to the lower surface of said plate, a binding strip abutting the edges of said plate, a retainin' member of channel cross-section abutting sai binding strip, tapped plates secured to the web of said retaining member, and means extending through said first-named member and into said tapped plates and serving to retain the binding strip in p ace.
2. Inan edge construction for table tops and the like, a top plate, a member secured to the lower surface of said plate, a binding strip abutting the edges of said plate, a retainin member of channel cross-section abutting sai binding strip, tapped plates secured to the web of said retainin member, and screws extending through sai first-named member and ing strip abutting the edges 0 said plate, a
channel retaining member having tapped plates secured to the web thereof, and means 7 extending through the web of the Z-bar and the binding strip in place.
4. In an edge construction for table tops and the like, a top plate, a Z-bar secured to the lower surface ofsaid top late, a binding strip abutting the edges of said plate, a channel retaining member having tapped plates secured to the web thereof, and screws extending through the web of the Z-bar and into the tapped plates, and serving to retain the binding strip in place.
5. In an edge construction for table tops and the like, a top plate, a member secured to the lower surface of said plate and having a portion spaced inwardly from the marginal edges of said top plate and an outwardly extending portion parallel with and spaced 100 from said to plate and constituting an abutment, a bin ing strip abutting the edges of said plate, a retaining member abutting said binding strip and abutment and means securing said retaining member to said first-named member.
6. A structure as defined in claim 5, in which the retaining member is provided with tapped plates rigidly secured thereto, and the means for securingvtheretaining memher to the first-named member comprises headed screws, the heads of which abut the inwardly spaced portion of the first-named member and threaded portions of which extend into the tapped plates.
7. In an edge construction for table tops and the like, atop plate, a member secured to the lower surface of said late and having a portion spaced inwardly iiom the marginal edges of said top plate and a portion parallel with and spaced from said top plate and extending outwardly to a point below the marginal edges of said top plate and constitutmg an abutment, a binding strip abutting the edges of said plate, a retaining member abutting said binding strip and abutment and means securing said retaining member to said firsbnamed member. 7
8. A structure as defined in claim 7, in which the retainin member is provided with tapped lates rigi ly secured thereto, and the means or securing the retaining member to the first-named member comprises headed screws, the heads of which abut the inward- 1y spaced portion of the first-named memher and the threaded portions of which extend into the tapped plates.
