HAMMALIMLJOHN ivr. nAiarMiirirAN, erin JACOB 1v1. HAMMALLAN, ALL OFHACKEN- silex.Y NEW JERSEY FOLDABLE DESK Application filed November 17, 1927. Serial No. 233,807.
This invention relates to improvements in foldable desks l One Vof the objects of my invention is to provide a folding `desk with a folding writing 5 topv and a folding drawer so as to produce,
when in extended position, a desk of complete and ornamental design, and when folded a small compact package may be produced.
Another object of this invention is to provide a folding desk having a folding writing shelf and a folding drawer compartment and to provide folding legs adapted, when in eX- tended position, to support the writing shelf, said folding legs carrying folding brackets arranged, upon extension, to support a drawer or like element beneath the writing leaf. K
Another object of my invention is to provide, -in combination with a desk of the type specified, a pigeon hole top having a closure for the front side thereof arrangedto be completely removed and bodily swiuig in the Y arc of a circle to the rear side of the pigeon hole top.
lVit-h these and other objects in view,the invention comprises the combination of members and arrangement of parts so coni-A bined as to co-act and cooperate with each other in the' performance of the functions and the accomplishment of the results herein contemplated, and comprises in one of its adaptations the species or preferred form illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Cal deskembodying my invention, the same being in extended position;
Fig. 2 is a similar perspective viewlof said' illustrate a preferred embodiment of my in-` vention, my'improved desk Acomprises a 'body portion 1 which, as shown, is composed of an oblong box-like structure' comprising side members 11, 11, a top member 12, a bracing Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a. Vfoldable member 13 and aback panelV 14. The said boXlike body portion is thus open at its forward side Vand to the forward edge 12 of they top 12 I hinge, by means of hingesB, a foldingleaf 2 preferably providedL near its oppo site side edges with moldings 2', this leaf2 is thus, as shown, adapted to be folded, into, substantially the same plane'as vthe forwardvv edge of the members 11, 11 of the body porn tion and is adapted to be swung upwardlyv into writing position as shownk in Figs. 1 and 3 and to be supported in said position by fold# able leg members 4 which, as shown, are hinged by two pairs ofhinges '5, 5, to the outer edge of the leg'members 11,11', of the. said body portion. The leaf-supporting leg' members 4 each comprise a. web portion '41, the
`inner edges of whichare hingedas herein-V disposed beneath the 'foldable leaf 2 and has its side edges,y adjacent 'to the bottom portion thereof, pivoted to the side membersof the kbody portionll', 11 adjacent to the back panel 14 so that whenthe same is in folded position it will fold down with its'bottoni' portion in abutment with the back panel,l the entire drawerelement being'enclosed within the said Vbody portion hereinabove described,
and this drawer is independently supported.I
by foldablc brackets 7 carried by the leg mem bers 4 and, as shown, mounted ina space 71 formed by reducing'the' thickness of the Vweb portion or'increasingrthe thicknessof the leg portion v42l of thel *leg member- 4.. As' illustrate'd, these brackets in folded'position lie flatagainst'the inner surface 41 of the web portion 41 of the leg member 4, the saine being pivoted in 'the corner formed between the junction in the member 41 and the leg v42 and these brackets 'are'adapted to be swung outwardly into position to support the drawer element 6.
- The drawer'element preferably comprises' a box 61 open atits forward end and having a drawer 62 of conventional pattern slidably mounted therein and provided with a lock '63 operable from a key hole 64 to enable a locking engagementbetween the drawer 63 and will, when in folded position, rest in abut-Y ment with the said back panel and be enclosed within the body portion, it being understood that the drawer element will be of slightly less width than the body portion so as to permit the saine when dropped to be enclosed on all sides except the front side byV members of the body portion.v
In operating the elements hereinabove described of my improved desk, assuming the same to be in the extended position shown in Ilig. 1, the foldable brackets 7 are swung inwardly into the space between the web portions and the drawer element 6. The drawer is then dropped into the position shown in Fig-4, and thereafter the leg elements 44e are folded on their hinges toward each other until the legs Zl2 thereof enter the notch 13 of the brace member 13, thus folding against the drawer, kwhereupon the leaf 2 may be dropped into the position shown in Fig. 4 so that its inner surface will rest against the leg portions 12. f
It will be seen that I ain thus enabled to provide a compact foldingdesk which will have all the appearance of permanence and stability and ornamental qualities usually implied by the provision of a drawer therein.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention, I also provide my improved desk with a pigeon-hole top 8 comprising a box-like structure composed of side members 81, 8l, Ia top member 82, a back panel 83, the bottom l ;portion of this top member 8 being, as shown,
open and supported within a seatV formed therefor by moldings 84 on the top 12 of the body portion. 'Ihis top 8 is provided with a folding closure plate or panel 85 which is pivoted intermediate its upper and lower edges. as at 85 to links 9 which at their opposite ends 91 are pivoted by screws 92 to the end members 81 of said top 8. The opposite ends of the links 9 are so pivoted adj acent to the top plate of the pigeon-hole top 8 and intermediate the front and rear thereof so that the closure plate or panel 85 will,'in closed position, extend in a vertical'plate so asto. close the front end of the said top and when it is desired to open the said top, the said closure plate may be swung bodily in the arc of a circle around or over the top member 82 of said pigeon hole top 8 tothe opposite sidethereof and may be caused to assume a reverse or inverted position at the Having described my invention, I claim 1. A folding desk embodying, in combination, a box-like body portion, a folding leaf having a hinged connection at the front edge of said box-like portion and foldable downwardly, al drawer element having a hinged connection within said box-like body portion in a horizontal plane below said hinged connection of the leaf and in a vertical pla-ne adjacent to the rear wall of said body portion, means for supporting said writing leaf, and means vfor independently supporting said drawer.
2. A folding desk embodying, in combination, a boX-like'body portion, a folding Vleaf hinged at the front edge of said box-like portion, a drawer hino'ed within said box-like body portion, foldable leg members for supporting said leaf, and means carried by said leg members for supporting said. drawer.
3. A folding desk embodying, in combi nation, a box-like body portion, a folding leaf hinged at the front edge of said box-like port-ion, a drawer hinged within said boxlike body portion, foldable leg members for supporting said leaf, and foldable brackets carried by said leg members for supporting said drawer.
4. A folding desk embodying, in combination, a box-like body portion, a folding leaf hinged at the front edge of said box-like portion, a drawerelement hinged within said box-like body portion, foldable leg members for supporting said leaf, and foldable brackets carried by said leg members for supporting said drawer element, said drawer element comprising a box-like structure open at its forward end andv having al drawer slidable therein, and-locking means for said drawer.
5. A folding desk embodying, in combi'-y Vleg portion and said drawer element.
In witness whereof, I have signed' my name to the foregoing specification.
JOHN FANARJIAN.
