Description

Patented June 2, 1931 UNITED STATES SASH. RETAINING Application filed August 6,1929. Serial No. 383,906.
This invention relates to novel means for use in association with a window sash, to function to hold it in adjusted position, and to overcome the necessity of employing cords, sash weights, and extensive fixtures for accomplishing the same purpose.
In carrying the invention into effect, I have evolved and produced what I believe to be a novel contrivance which is efficient,
l0 easy to manipulate, and susceptible of fulfilling the requirements of a structure of this class in a satisfactory manner.
The particular features and association and arrangement will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevational view of a complete window embodying retainers constructed in accordance with the present invention. p
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view in section and elevation, showing the details and features of the retaining means more effectively.
Fig. 3 is a view angles to Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an elevational view lshowing a complete sash embodying the features of the invention. l,
As seen in Fig. 1, the reference character 5 designates the usual frame, and 6 and 7 indicate the upper and lower sashes. The retaining means is the same on each sash and a description of one will suffice for both. Referring to Fig. 4, it will be seen that the side bars of the sash frame are recessed to accommodate metallic fittings 8 including U-shaped portions formingpockets for reception of cushions or plugs 9. These pro]- ect slightly beyond the side bars of the sash. frame and engage the window frame proper and operate somewhat in'the'natureof sliding shoes.
A single retainer is provided for each and taken at substantial right by referring to Fig. 2 it will be seen that the side bar is cut out to form an opening as at 10. Pivoted eccentrically as at 11 in this opening, is a locking cam 12 having a curvate tip or abutment 13 engaging the window frame. This retainer is formed so as to extend through an opening inthe metal facing plate 14 and formed with an extension 15 constituting a finger grip to facilitate operation of the inside ofthe sash frame.
The reference characters 16 and 17 designate notches whichV function as keeper seats. Then too, there is a depending extension 18 cooperable with a supplemental notch 19 in which a coiled spring 20 is arranged.` The pressure of the spring issuch as to' maintain the abutment 13 in firm frictional engagement with the window frame as is obvious.
The reference character 21 designates a" latch hingedly mounted at 22 and formed witha lateral detent or tonguel 28 selectively1 receivable in the keeper seats 16 and 17. The free end portion of the latch is provided with a finger piece 24.
A careful consideration of thedetailed description in connection with the drawings, will enable a clear understanding of the coustruction, mounting, operation, and features and advantages of the Vinvention to be had. Therefore, a more lengthy descriptionis regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size and materials and rearrangement of details, coming within the-field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is v In a structure of the class described, a sash frame bar having an opening, a cam like retainer of the general outline of a' mutilated Y circle having eccentric pivotal mounting in Y said opening, the lower part of said opening having a notch and saidretainer having a depending extension, and an expanding coiled spring arranged in saidnotch and cooperable with said extension at a point below the pivotal mounting of the retainer, to urge said retainer in frictional and supporting engagement with the frame, one end of said retainer projecting through a corresponding end of the opening, and adapted to engage the window frame, the opposite end projectible through-and beyond the adjacent end of the opening and formed with a iinger grip, a hingedly upwardly swinging latch having a detent arranged to engage the face of the inner edge ofthe retainer, and said retainer :'.having keeper seats Ywith. .which f said detent is selectively engageable, Y In testimony whereof I aflix m signature.
