In a barrel forming machine, asupport, a collapsible mandrel supported thereon, a
plurality of flexible elements underlying the. fmandrel, pulleys supported to'one side of the mandrel and over which one end "the" flexible elements are trained, weights attached ,to' the 7 depending ends ofsu'chvflexible elements, upstanding plates g I attached to support at the opposite slde'of the mandrel, and a'channel-shaped securing member carried by the opposite end of each of the flexible elements and removably engaged with one of the upstanding plates whereby the flexible elements take a substantial U-shaped form to constitute cradle-like temporary supports for staves placed on the mandrel, and means for securing the ends of the staves to the mandrel until hoops have been secured on such staves.
