Description
June 2, 1931. J. A. BAILEY PRINTING DEVICE Filed Nov. 30. 1927 ooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooo oooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooa Patented June 2, 193] UNITED STATES ama-a PATENT OFFICE I JAIsEE-S A. BAILEY, OF VTASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO ADDRESSO- GRAPH COMPANY, OF \VILM-INGTON, DELAWARE, A CORPORATION OF DELAVI ARE 1 PRINTING DEVICE Application filed November 30, 1927. Serial No. 236,657.
This invention relates to printing devices of that class which are adapted tobe run through a printing machine for taking impressions therefrom and whica are filed and stored in drawers or trays according to predetermined classification.
The printing machines have been provided with selector devices and the printing devices have been equipped with detachable tabs 19 whereby the printing devices are classified for filing and storing and are automatically selected for printing or for shipping as they pass through the machine. The printing devices are relatively small in size and only a comparatively limited classification can be provided for by the tabs heretofore used. The extensive use of these devices and machines has created a demand for more specialized classification and selection.
The object of the invention is to provide a standard detachable tab frame for use on all printing devices to be tabbed in a set, and a card removably engaged with the tab frame, the tab frame having a plurality of openings 25 therein and the card having certain openings to register with corresponding openings in the tab frame for snecific classification and selection of the particular printing device. another object is to facilitate insertion and 39 removal of the card of the tab by providing means on the tab frame to engage the edges of the card except the lower edge thereof and employing the upper edge of the plate frame of the printing device to hold the card on the tab when the tab is secured in place on the plate frame.
Referring to the drawings:
' Fig. l is a front plan elevation of a printing device embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a detached view of the tab with its card partly broken away.
Fig. 3 is a back view of the printing device, as shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line H of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings 4 is a plate frame which is provided with suitable devices for receiving and holding a plate 5 which bears the printing characters in relief thereon. An information card 6 is detacha-bly engaged with retaining devices 7 on the plate frame and including a bead 8 at the top edge of the plate frame. The plate frame is also provided with a plurality of slots to form keepers 9, 10 which are arnnged in a series. I" or row across the plate frame adjacent the top thereof.
An elongated tab frame 11 has a. plurality of depending stems 12 adapted for detachable engagement with keepers in the plate frame. This tab frame has its top and side edges bent to form beads 13 and 14; to re-ceiv a detachable card 15.
I have shown the tab frame provided with four stems adapted for engagement with keepers of a commercial plate frame which is provided with a plurality of keepers adapted to receive single tabs, that is a small tab with a single stem. But theplate frame may be provided with keepers especially designed to receive the stems of this tab only. My improved tab is adapted foruse on commercial plate frames as well as for plate frames made .especially to receive it, and this is important because the tab can be applied to sets of printing devices already made up and in use without requiring any change in the plate frame or disturbing the arrangement thereof in the set. The tab frame is provided with a multiplicity of openings 16 and the card is 99 provided with one or more openings 17 registering with corresponding openings in the tab frame. The intention is that the tab frames may allbe made of standard construction and that the tab card may be punched with openings to designate the particular printing device for classification purposes,
for selection purposes or for both classification and selectio- I The card is held in place in the tab frame by the beads 13 and 14 and by the beaded top edge of the plate frame. To replace the tab card the tab is disengaged from the plate frame, or pulled out'suificiently to permit the tab card to be removed by sliding it in a direc tion opposite the beaded top edge of the tab frame, and inserting a new card beneath the end beads 14 and sliding it up towards and under the top bead 13, after which the tab is engaged with the plate frame. Thelower mo edge of the tab card engages the beaded top edge of the plate frame, at the back of the bead to hold the card securely in place in the tab frame.
The tab frame is provided with a multiplicity of openings so that it can be made in standard form and used as such for a highly specialized classification and selection system. The openings in the card designate the printing device for classification and'selection purposes and because there are a large number of these openings and they may beused in many combinations, it is possible with a comparatively small tab to provide for a classification having many divisions and sub-divisions. The beads on the tab frame reinforce and strengthen it and the use of a tab frame with so many openings does not in any way lessen the strength of the printing device because the plate frame need not be changed except, if desired, to provide it with only sufficient keepers to accommodate this type of tab frame. Reducing the number of keepers tends to add to the strength of the plate frame. It is an important feature of my invention that an existing printing device installation may be classified or reclassified without changing the printing device, but simply by providing the new tab, and this may be done without removing the printing device from its position in the system. The tab frame can be used over and over again since it is only required to provide a new tab card when the classification of the printing device is changed or the tab is used for a different printing device.
I have shown the invention adapted for a commercial printing device, but I do not restrict the invention for use with a device of this particular construction and I believe it will be readily understood that the tab can be used with printing devices otherwise constructed; and I reserve the right to change the construction and arrangement of the tab within the scope of the following claims:
I claim:
1. A detachable tab for a printing device comprising a tab frame having a plurality of openings therein and means for mounting said frame on a printing device, a card, and retaining means on the tab frame to re ceive the card, said card having one or more openings registering V with corresponding openings in the tab frame.
2. A detachable tab for a printing device comprising a tab frame having a plurality of openings therein and means for mounting said frame on a printing device, a card,'and beads at the top and side edges of the tab frame to receive and retain the card on said frame, said card having one or more openings registering with corresponding openings in the tab frame. 7
3. A printing device comprising a frame having meansthereon for making printing frame, said tab frame having heads at its top and side edges and said card being received by said beads with its bottom edge abutting the top edge of the printing means frame.
