The ends of the head 23 are formed with ears 25 through which the shaft 24 extends, and projectin up from said ears are lugs 26 through w ich extend adjustment studs 27 that bear against shoulder blocks 28 bolted or otherwise fastened to the upper edges of the side frame members 10. By turning the adjustmentstuds 27, the head 23 may be partially rotated upon the axis of the shaft 24, thereby changing the angular position of the teeth 22, and, as a consequence, increasing or' decreasing the depth at which they will engage the pavement.
The head 23 is formed with a plurality of square openings 29 therethrough which extend at an oblique angle, and in said openings are received the teeth 22. In order to provide for the longitudinal adjustment of the teeth 22 in the head23, the teeth are formed with spaced notches 30 in their side edges and the head 23 is formed with a lengthwise extending groove 31 in its upper face with which any of the notches in the teeth maybe made to register, and a locking bar 32 is provided which is placed in the groove 81 and in the notches of the teeth that have been adjusted into registry with the groove.
When the bar is placed in the groove and registering notches, it effectively locks the teeth to thehead and provides a very sturdy and rugged connection therebetween which is very essential because of the rough usage to which a machine of this character is put. For securing the locking bar in place, a plurality of studs 33 may be provided in the head 23 in position to extend through openings in the locking bar, and nuts 34 are provided upon the studs for engaging with the locking bar. a
It is to be observed that the head 23 may be adjusted to bring the teeth 22 into any desired angle of inclination and the teeth may thus be raised or lowered somewhat to bring their effective ends into position for making the desired cut. Furthermore, in case it is desired to make a deeper or shallower cut than can be obtained by adjusting the head, the locking bar 32 may be detached and the teeth 22 drawn out of the openings 29 and turned to bring the proper notches into register with the groove 31, so as to obtain the proper adjustment after which the locking bar 32 may be again secured in place, thereby securely locking the teeth in the head.
Power operated means is provided for depressing the supporting element for the spiked rollers and scarifier, and, as shown, said device comprises a ram 35 mounted upon some stationary portion of the paving roller and having a piston rod 35 connected to the supporting element for the spiked rollers and scarifier. As shown, the connection between the piston rod and supporting element comprises a rod or bar 36 mounted in brackets 37 secured to the side frame members. The piston rod is provided with a sleeved member on its lower end which encircles the rod or bar 36.
When used in connection with a steam paving roller, the ram 35 may be supplied with steam from the boiler of the paving roller and suitable control mechanism (not shown) may. of course, be provided for governing the admission of the steam to the cylinder of the ram. Inasmuch as the supporting element for the s iked roller and scarifier is movable upon a fulcrum, the ram is also fulcrumed upon the paving roller to permit it to oscillate thereon and thereby accommodate itself to any changes of angularity between the supporting element and cylinder of the ram.
The ram operates to depress the scarifier structure and means are provided for limiting the downward movement of the latter.
Said means comprises, as shown, a pair of heavy chains 38 secured to the brackets 37 and to some stationary part of the paving roller. Turn buckles, or other threaded connections, are provided in connection with the chains, whereby the position of the scarifying structure may be regulated to obtain the desired penetration of the spikes 20 into the pavement. It is to be observed that the ram 35 operates to force the scaritying structure in a downward direction, which action is limited by the length of the chains. As a result, the amount of penetration of the spikes into thesurface portionof the pavement can be regulated to suit the peculiar conditions of the pavements.
In the operation of the apparatus. the proper adjustments are made with the chains 38 and turnbuckles 40 and with the scarifying head 23 and its teeth 22. The paving roller is driven over the pavement to be operated on and steam is admitted to the ram, thereby forcing the scarifying structure down to the limit allowed by the chains. Inasmuch as the spiked rollers 12 travel at a greater surface speed than the traction roll of the paving roller, the spiked rollers not only act to tear up the surface portion of the pavement, but also aid the traction roll in propelling the machine along the pavement. The teeth of the scarifier follow the spiked rollers and rip off the surface portion of the pavement to a depth determined by the lower ends of the teeth.
It is to be observed that the paving roller may be used for rolling down pavements in the usual manner, and when so used, the scarifying attachment is raised above the surface of the pavement so that it will not interfere with the operation of the paving roller. I
The ram operated scarifying supporting element may be used for other purposes than for supporting the spiked rollers and scarifier. For instance, a grooved paving roller, such as is shown and described in my application" for patent on paving rollers, iiled March 13, 1929, under Serial No. 346,537, may be used in place of the spiked rollers when rolling pavements.-
