TOBACCO PIPE Filed Sept. 25, 1929 Patented Mey 5, 1931 PASQUALE MANCUSZI, OF NEW YORK, v1\T. .Y
ASSIGNDR '10 PURSMOKE `:PIPE COMPANY,
INC., OF NEW' YORK, N. Y., A COMIPANY OF DELAWARE TOBACCO PIPE Application filed September 25, 1929. Serial N0. 395,039.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements 1n a Vtobacco pipe and one Lof its ob]ects is yto improve the construction of Vthe -pipevshown and'described in my co-pendwhereby a Vless `number of parts are necessary :to :produce the device.
Another object of thel invention is 'to so Vform the bottom vclosure that it will "be less likely for the accumulated moisture .to `leak out. f Y
A further object of the invention is to provide a pipe in which any .moisture or saliva that tends to accumulate in the same will flow into the recessed closure and be prevented from entering the smokers mouth when drawing on the pipe during smoking thereof.
further obfect of the invention is to construct a tobacco pipe in a novel manner to provide a circuitous passageway from the tobacco bowl to the pipe stem.
A still further object of the invention is to so construct the pipe as to provide an integral partition between the pipe bowl and the recessed closure so as to define two distinct parts of the pipe bowl.
Tith these ends in view, this invention con.-
sists in the details of construction and com of a tobacco pipe constructed in accordance c with my invention.
In carrying out my invention as herein embodied, 2 represents the main pipe bowl having an upper chamber 3 terminating short of the bottom of the pipe bowl, preferably at a pointl midway the length or height of the pipe bowl where there is formed a central cavity 4 surrounded by an annular groove 5.
'The upper end ofthe 'pipe fbowl fis provided with nieans, suchfas threads, whereby the itobaccojbowl 7 kmay ybe removably mounted therein, the latter being provided 'with complementary means, such'as threads 8 for coaction with the -threads 6. n
- rIIhe tobacco ybowl is of cup-like formation and has an overhangifng flange19so Vas to produce a groove 10 for registration with the /upperend of the pipe Ebowl 2 and the :side Walls of fthe vlatter are `preferably beveled to correspond with the 'beveled inner walls of the 'over-:hanging flange on thetobacco'bo'wl which will cause the .tobacco and pipe bowls to snugly fit each other and reduce -to a miniminfin ithe chances of'drawing air between Ithe twobowls during the smoking pro-cess. The lower iportion of wthe 'tobacco Ebovvl yis tapered so 'as to be lout offcontact With J[he ipipe vbowl y and provide a 4space of fairly large capaci-ty to receive the smoke prior to-.being drawn to the'useirs mouth and-the extremeV lower cn d :o'fsai'd 'tobacco Ibowl is aperturedas Vat 11 :for the passage vof smoke :from the :burning tobanco. Then the tobacco bow-lis Yin place, l75
the lowerendis directly :above vbut in "close proximity vto the cavity 4.'
The lower endiof the pifpe boWfl laas a large 'central recess 112 therein :surrounded by a groove'l so as to define ra flange 14 gproa vided withfineafns 15, such as threads, whereby ythe closure 16 Xmay ybe :removably mounted, the latter ,bein-a' provided with complementary means 17., such :as threads; The 4closure in fcludes an exterior flange 18 which -carries the securingim'eans 1f? and suitably spaced from said flange 'en the inside of 'the closure- 2is 4an annular verticalw'all 19 to provide the recess 20 and the groove Q1. When the closure lis mounted on the pipe bowl, tlie fla-nge 14 said chamber 3 and bore l2 are in communication through the aperture 23. f
The pipe bowl is provided with a stem 24 having a socket 25 from which runs a branched passageway including an upper duct 26 inclined upwardly from the'socket to the chamber 3 and a. lower duct 27 inclined downwardly from the socket to the bore 12 for communication with the recessed closure and said lower duct is preferably of greater cross sectional 'area than the upper duct in order to take care of the combined accumulations o-f moisture from the upper duct 26 and the mouth piece 28. l v
From the foregoing description, it will be obvious that when tobacco is being burned within the tobaccobowl, smoke therefrom will Vbe drawn into chamber 3 where it may circulate and finally pass through the upper duct'25 into the mouth piece and thence to the users mouth. This circuitous flow of the smoke tends to reduce the temperature so as to be more pleasing to the smoker.
Any moisture which accumulates or tends to accumulate in the pipe bowl will flow directly into the recessed closure through the aperture 23 or will flow down the upper duct A 26 to its junction with the lower duct from which point it will flow down the lower duct along with any moisture which may come from the bore of the mouth piece, finally entering the recessed closure. l/Vhen necessary or desirable, the recessed closure may be removed and cleaned of'any moisture or any foreign-substance, thus keeping the pipe fairly dry and sweet. Y
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the Spirit of my invention.
tion between said end recesses, a closure having an exterior flange and a vertical wall spaced from said ange to produce a groove for registration with the flange at the bottom of the pipe bowl and said vertical wall registers with the groove in the bottom of the pipe bowl when the closure is in place, a tobacco bowl removably mounted in the chamber of the pipe bowl and having an over-hanging flange for coaction with the outer surface 'of the pipe bowl and a stem carried by the pipe lcavity and an aperture to provide communications between said cavity and thel lower recess, a closure for the lower recess, a tobacco bowl removably mounted in the upper recess and a stem carried by said bowl and provided with two ducts leading from a common point to each of the recesses, and a packing washer between the pipe bowl and closure.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto aiiixed my signature.
' PASQUALE MANCUSI.
Having thus fully described my invention, p
what I claim as new and useful isi:-
l. A tobacco pipe including a bowl recessed at the Yupper and lower ends, a partition hetween said recesses in which is formed a large central cavity, a groove surrounding the cavity and an aperture to providecommunications between said cavity and the lower i recess, a closure for the lower recess, a tobacco bowl removably mounted in the upper recess and a stem carried by said bowl and provided .with two ducts leading from a common point to each of the recesses. 2. A tobacco pipe including a bowl recessed at its upper end to provide a chamber, said recess being so fashioned as to produce a large central cavity and a groove surrounding said cavity, said pipe bowl also beingl recessed from the Vbottom end to define a central bore and a groove surrounding said bore, a flange projecting from the lower end ofthe pipe bowl, a partition within the pipe bowl between the end recesses and having an aperture therethrough to provide communica-
