UNITE STATES PATENT QFFIQEL.
RAPHEL PHILLIPSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETV-POCKETS FOR GARMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. lS0,372, dated July 25,1876; application filed May 4, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAPHEL PHILLIPSON, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook, of the State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful lmprovementin Safety-Pockets for Garments or Wearing-Apparel, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawing.
This invention relates to a new and improved safety-pocket for pants, vests, coats, ladies dresses, and other garments, to be employed in connection with the ordinary pockets usually employed in such garments.
Safety-pockets have heretofore been used in connection with the ordinary pockets of garments; but prior to my invention the fastening device in such pockets has been so exposed that it can be readily felt by the hand when inserted in the pocket of the garment, thus indicating the presence of the safetypocket, and rendering it comparatively use less.
My invention is designed to overcome this objection; and it consists in combining with the safety-pocket a flap or covering of any suitable material, which is to be dropped over the mouth of said safety-pocket when the same is fastened, in order to cover and conceal the'fastening device, and enable the hand of the wearer to be more readily inserted, thus furnishing a more comfortable garment than heretofore constructed with such safetypockets.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a sectional view of my invention, showing the safe- Fig. 2 represents a view of the garment with the pockets indicated in dotted lines, and Fig. 3
represents a sectional view of the garment,-
showing the safety-pocket opened with the hand inserted therein.
The letter 0 represents the garment, and D the ordinary pocket formed therein,'as usual. The letter B represents'the safety-pocket, secured to the inner side of the ordinary pocket D, at any point between its bottom and top, the said safety-pocket opening into the ordinary pocket a slight distance below its mouth.
The letter E represents a flap stitched, or
otherwise secured, to the'inner portion of the ordinary pocket, or to the garment, in such position that it may be placed over the mouth of the safety-pocket, and secured by means of a button, f, being provided with a button-hole, e, for the purpose.
It is evident, however, that any other fastening device-such as a hook and eye, for iiistancemay be substituted for the button and button-hole, if desired.
The letter A represents a flap of any suitable material secured over the flap E, in any convenient manner, the said flapA being somewhat larger than the flap E, so that, when dropped down over it, it will ,entirely cover and conceal the fastening device.
It will be perceived that the back part of the ordinary pocket in the present invention forms one side of the safety-pocket, the other side being preferably stitched at the bottom with the ordinary pocket, making the two pockets of the same depth. This construction enables me to dispense with the extra piecelieretofore found necessary in the construction of safety-pockets,making a much less clumsy pocket.
As thus constructed, when the safety-pooh et is properly secured, upon the insertion of the hand no fastening device will be felt to indicate the presence of the safety-pocket, affording the utmost security against the abstraction of its contents.
The'safety-flap covering the fastening devices renders it much more convenient for inserting and withdrawing the hand, thus renderingtlie garment much more comfortable.
What I- claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a safety-pocket secured within the ordinary pocket of the garment, the flap A for covering and concealing the fastening devices of the safety-pocket, sub stantially as described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand this 1st day of May, 1876.
. RAIHEL PHILLIPSON.
In presence of JOHN ALLEs, J r., WILLIAM ScHULz.
