Filed July 15. 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor af remzqzh Burk Patented May 5, 1931 UNITED STATES JEREMIAH BURKE, OF TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA STEAM BOILER Application filed July 13, 1928. Serial No. 292,518.
This invention relates to steam boilers and has for its primary object to provide a boiler that is relatively simple in construction, of such a nature as to facilitate the rapid generation of steam without requiring an unusual amount of heat.
A further and important object is to provide a steam boiler of this character constructed for arrangement with a fire box, and having at its rear end a series of longitudinally extending the tubes through which the tire and smoke from the fire box will pass so as to highly heat the water within the boiler.
Furthermore, circulating means is provided to cause the movement of the water within the boiler resulting in the more rapid generation of steam therein.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a furnace equipped with my improved super-heating steam boiler,
Figure 2 is a detail longitudinal vertical section thereof,
Figure 3 is a transverse horizontal section taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1,
M) one of the circulating tubes taken substantially upon the line 55 of Figure i and looking upwardly in the direction of the arrows.
Now having particular reference to the drawings, A designates a furnace construction within the upper end of which is arranged my improved boiler designated generally by the reference character B.
This boiler is of suitable dimension and of any predetermined shape in cross section,
the flames, hot gases and the like passing rearwardly to the smoke pipe C of the furnace will pass tlierethrough for rapidly, heating the water within the boiler; I
Directly above. this pit 5 and suitably joined to the, rear wall of the boiler is a horizontally extending plate 7 the major portion of which is at all times above the normal level of the water within the boiler as indicated in Figure 2. I
At opposite sides of the center thereof, this plate is inclineddownwardly so that any water dropping thereon will rollofi-of the plate to the pit 5. Arranged through openings in the center of this plate are longitudinally spaced circulating tubes 8 the lower inlet ends of which are flared as at 9, the upper ends of these tubes above the plates being provided with circular manifolds 10 having water emitting openingsll in their bottom walls as clearly illustrated in Figure 5.
Leading into the boiler B and directly above the manifolds 10 is a cold water inlet pipe 12 having discharge openings directly above said manifold. Gbviously the water within the boiler becomes heated and especially that water within the pit 5,'the same will flow upwardly through the tubes 8 and upon being discharged from the manifold 10 will drop upon the plate 7 whereby the water will be directed against the heated walls of the boiler causing the rapid conversion of the water into steam, the top of the boiler being employed as a steam dome and from which extends a steam outlet D. Furthermore, the manifolds themselves will be highly heated so that a portion of the incoming water dropping thereon will be transformed into steam.
It will thus be seen thatI have provided a highly novel, simple, and efficicnt'steam boiler, that is well adapted for all the purposes heretofore designated.
Even though I have herein shown and described the invention as consisting of certain detail structural elements, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without affecting the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is y In a steam boiler for furnaces, a boiler body, the bottom wall of which merges at one end into a water pit having inclined' side walls, fire tubes extending longitudinally through the pit and communicating at opposite ends With the interior of the furnace, a plate arranged longitudinally within the boiler above said pit and having its major portion at all times disposed above the normal level of the Water within the pit, said plate beingprovided with downwardly directed surfaces terminating in spaced relation with the inclined walls of the pit, Vertical tubes arranged through the plate and having their lower ends below the plate within the pit, the upper ends thereof terminating slightly above the plate, manifolds arranged upon the upper ends of the tubes and having discharge openings whereby the water flowing upwardly through the tubes will drop upon the plate to be directed toward the walls of the boiler, a cold water inlet pipe having discharge openings disposed relative to said tube manifolds whereby cold water may be discharged onto said manifolds, and said boiler being provided with a steam outlet.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
I JEREMIAH BURKE.
