Description

April 28, 1931. 07 LINSTADT 1,802,519
BOTTOM GUIDE FOR SLIDING BARN-DOORS Filed April 2. 1929 o'je Patented Apr. 28, 1931 UNETQED STATES OTTO LINSTADT, OF MADISON, NEBRASKA BOTTOM GUIDE FOR- SLIDING BARN DOOR-S Application filed April 2,
This invention relates to a bottom guide for sliding doors particularly barn and stock building doors.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a barn door bottom track and guide which will efiectively hold the lower part of the door in position against the door sill and which is of such construction that cattle passing over the sill will not damage the track.
Another object of the invention is toprovide a bottom guide for sliding doors which while acting to maintain the bottom of the door closely against the door sill will, at the same time, permit any necessary slight outward movement of the door so that a free operation of the door may be had.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of the present invention with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure l is a view in front elevation of a portion of a sliding door equipped with the device embodying the, present invention.
Fi ure 2 is a sectional View taken upon the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 indicates the frame about a door opening 2 of a barn or similar building in association with whichsliding doors are used. A door structure is indicated by the numeral 3 and is slidably supported in position before the door opening by hangers 4 of the usual type which engage a suitable supporting track 5 secured to the wall of the building over the door opening.
The structure embodying the present invention is designed to hold the lower side of the door firmly against the sill thereof, the

sill being here indicated by the numeral 6. In the application of the door guide embodying this invention, the sill is provided with a face strip. 7 against which the lower part of the door frictionally bears and secured against the face of the sill beneath the strip 7 is a guide track 8 which is of U shaped cross sectional design and has the open side thereof directed downwardly, as shown. In this manner the bottom or yoke portion of the guide track abuts the underface of the strip 7' and one side abuts the forward face of the sill 6, the inner face of the door 3 bearing against the other side thereof.
The lower part of the door 3 has depending therefrom a pair or more of yoke members 9 each of which is of substantially U shaped design, as shown, and receives between the side portions 10 thereof the lower edge of the door, a space being left between the lower edgeof the door and the yoke portion 11 of the hanger. Extending transversely through the side portions 10 of each of the hangers Sis a guide track holding member 12 which is in the form of an elongated flat plate, the inner end of which is turned upwardly to form the tongue 13 which extends into the open side of the track 8 and frictionally engages the inner face of the outer side member thereof, in the manner shown.
The outer end of each of the holding memhers 12 carries a coiled spring 14, the inner end of which bears against the adjacent portion 10 of the holder supporting hanger while the outer end extends into a cap or cup 15 through which the member 12 passes. The outer end of each cap 15 has a head provided with a slot provided for the passage of the holdingmember 12 and the member 12 carries a transversely extending key or pin 16 against which the outer end of the cap 15 abuts and by which it is prevented from being forced from the holding member by the spring 14.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that the action of the door bottom holder is such as to draw the bottom of the door firmly inwardly against the door sill but the holder is yieldable so that the door 19:
can easily pass over any inequalities in the face of the sill Without binding.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a bottom guide and holder for sliding doors including a door and a sill having the lower pare ottheouter face recessed; a guide track of substantially U shaped cross sectional design designed to position in said recess and to open downwardly, a hanger member designed to be carried at thelower edge of and by the door and to extendacross said track, a track engaging holder sli'd'abl'y carried by each hanger comprising an elongated member reciprocably carried transversely of the lower edge of the door and by the hanger,- said holder having its inner end ti'ifn'ed' upwardly for frictional engagement in the track, spring I i-ember carried uponthe outer end of the h'ol'dera-nd bearing atone end a gainsttlie adjacent hanger, at the other end against a fixed part of the holder and a casing for said spring whereby to prote-etthe same {BOTH inj my.
2. A bottoni uide and holder for slid'in doors including a door and a sill having the lower part" of the outer face dressed; a U shaped guide t raok positioned in said recess and opening downwardl therefroni,= 9;
1 hanger member depend ingiy' secured to the lower edge of the deer, and an L shaped spring pressed track engaging member slid abl yposi-ti'oned in said l i'a ngei member; said shaped truck engaging member being adapted to fricti onal liv engage the outer d'epe'nding portion of said uidetrack; V
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiia my signature.-
OTTO EINS'IADT.
