swo'mea BATTERY CONNECTION Filed Jan. 9, 1929 v INVINTCIQ ATTORNIY Patented Apr. 7 28, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LE ROY E. FAUCHER AND ALEX A. FAUGHER, OF IpESNO, CALIFORNIA STORAGE-BATTERY CONNECTION Application filed January 9, 1929. Serial No. 881,278.
This invention relates to a battery connection, the general object of the invention being to provide a member for fitting over a battery post and carrying a second member for contacting the post, said first member forming a chamber between itself and the post for receiving a liquid or a semi-liquid, such as petroleum, which acts to prevent corrosion between the posts and the contacting members.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the contacting member will cut into the top of the post when the parts are applied to the post so as to make a firm connection between the connection and the post.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to
be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing our invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding'parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view with parts in section showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2--2 of Fig ure 1.
In these views 1 indicates the lead post or terminal of the battery B which has its upper part threaded and 3 indicates a sleeve preferably formed of brass and having its lower part threaded on the post. A plug 4 is threaded in the top part of the sleeve and has a circular enlargement 5 thereon which is knurled so that the plug can be easily inserted into the sleeve. This plug carries a central member 6 which projects above the plug and its lower end is formed with a head 7 so formed that it will bite into the top of the post when the plu is screwed home, thus insuring a good electrical connection between the post and the member 6. A chamber 8 is formed between the plug and top of the post and liquid or semi-liquid petroleum is placed in said chamber to prevent corrosion between the head and post.
A terminal 9 is leaded to the cable 10 and the reduced outer end of said terminal has a hole therein to receive the upper end of the member 6 which is also leaded to the terminal.
From the foregoing it will be seen that we have provided simple means for insuring a positive electrical connection between the posts and the connecting means as the mem her 6 will bite into the metal of the post and co the petroleum will prevent corrosion of the parts. As the terminal is leaded to both the cable and member 6 there is no danger of corrosion at these points.
It is thought from the foregoing description that -the advantages and novel features of our invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that we may make changes in' the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What we claim is:
In combination with a battery and its post, said post having its upper end threaded, a 7 sleeve internally threadedto engage the threads at the upper end of the battery post, a plug threading in the upper end of the sleeve and having its lower end spaced from the top of the post whereby the plug is out of contact with the post and forms a chamber between itself and the top of the post, a member carried by and passing through the plug and having a headed part within the chamber and contacting with the top of the post, said head being so formed that it will cut into the metal of the post when the plug is screwed home, petroleum in the chamber and a terminal connected with the upper end of the member. 90
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures.
LE ROY E. FAUCHER. ALEX A. FAUCHER.
