Description

I -April 21, 1931. .w. E WARD 1,801,890-
FENCE Filed Jan. 10, 1931 Patented Apr. 21, 1931 METER? sues WILLIAM WARD,
or DELMAR, IOWA FENCE Application filed January 10, 1931. Serial No. 507,974. 7
This invention relates to fences, and itis an object of the invention to provide a structure of this kind including a fence post having an opening through which a wire strand is adapted to be disposed, together with means including a removable staple for holding the wire strand against accidental displacement with respect to the post.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved fence whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the upper portion of a post constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, an applied wire strand being shown in section and a retaining staple being applied;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1 with a secon d staple illustrated to indicate the manner of its application or removal with respect to the post;
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of the upper end portion of the post as herein set forth.
As disclosed in the accompanying rawing, P denotes a metal post including a flange 1 provided at predetermined points therealong with the openings 2. Each of these openings 2 is adapted to have disposed therethrough a 40 wire strand 3 or the like.
In communication with the forward portion of the opening 2 and substantially tangential thereto is a depending slot l of substantial length. This slot 4 midway its ends has in'communication therewith a perpendic- 'ularly related slot 5 opening through the outer marginal portion-of the flange 1.
The retaining member for an applied wire strand 3 as herein disclosed comprises a flat staple member S having spaced prongs 6 adapted to straddle the opposite sides of the flange 1 when the member S is in applied position. This member S also includes a head 7 which, when the staple member is applied, snugly fills the slot 4 and thereby closes the same against passage therethrough of the wire strand 3.
hen the member S is applied it is in-. serted laterally through the slot 4, as indicated in the lower portion of Figure 2, until the head 7 of the member S may be allowed to readily drop within the slot 4.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a fence constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof andfor this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. A fence post having a flange provided with an opening through which a wire strand is adapted to be passed, said flange having a depending slot in communication with the opening, a second open slot in communication with the first slot, and a retaining staple hav- I ing ahead adapted to snugly fill the first slot when the retaining staple is applied, said retaining staple having prongs for coaction with the opposite faces of the flange.
2. A fence post having a flange provided with an opening through which a wire strand is adapted to be passed, said flange having a depending slot in communication with the opening, a second open slot in communication with the first slot, and a retaining staple having a head adapted to snugly fill the first slot when the retaining staple is applied, said retaining staple having prongs for coaction with the opposite faces of the flange, said prongs of the staple extending below the low- M er end of the first slot when said staple is in applied position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
WILLIAM E. WVARD.
