-IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

vTo all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENNETT J. MURRAY, of Honey Greek. in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useiul'Improveinent in NVashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the f'ollowing` isa full and exact description of the same, reference being had' to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention consists, mainly, in certain -peculiarities of construction, by meansof which a simple, effective, and durable machine is obtained.

-In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a per- 's pective view ot' a machine having my improvements applied thereto; Fig. 2, a longitudinal central vertical sectional elevation; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the journal-casting; and Fig.. 4, an elevation of the casting and its socket for holding the legs.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.

A represents the tub or receptacle of the machine, constructed of any suitable material and proper size, but consisting ot' a body, a. B B represent the levs by means `of which the tub is supported, consisting ot' bars of proper strength and size, preferably made tapering from thetop downward, and sc cut that when secured tothe tub on converging lines, the adjacent faces of the uper ends will come together on a vertical line and afford mutual support, as shown in Fig. 4, while `the lower ends, Widely extended, rest firmly upon the iioor, as shown in Fig. l. b b represent securing-screws, by means of which the legs are secured, near their centers, to the lower edge of the` tub, as shown. C represents a casting having the projecting bearingarms c c, the main portion c1, with dependent lug c2, and vertical slot c3, open above but terminating below in a jomnal-bearing, as shown, and also upon its outer face, the socket c, the inner sides of which -are inclined, as shown. The operation of my. improved machine will be readily understood.

When it is desired to use the same, the rubber D is removed, this action being permitted by the open-ended bearings ofthe shaft, and the clothing, water, soap, &c., introduced into the tub in proper quantities, according to the judgment ot4 the operator. rlhe rubber having been replaced, the handle is operated to rubv and cleanse the clothes in the manner well understood.

Some ofthe advantages ofthe construction described, are as follows: The construction is exceedingly simple, and yet the parts are strongly held, so that the machine is durable, and not liable to get out of order. It can be built ata reasonable price, its simplicity reducing materially theV expense of construction.

By means of the peculiarl construction of the journal-casting it is well adapted for the several distinct purposes for which it is designed.

Having. thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to seoure'by Letters Patent, is-

l. The journal-casting, provided with the journal-slot, bearing-arms, and triangular socket, as described.

2. The combination of the casting having the socketc4, wit-h the legs, as described.

.3. In combination with thecasting C, having the dependent lug c2, the tub A, with corresponding recess, as described.
