TYPE HOLDER FOR BOX PRINTING PRESSES Filed Dec. 26. 1928 A TTOR NE YS..
Patented Apr. 21, 1931 T OFFICE FREDERICK B'. JORGENSEN, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA TYPE HOLDER FOR BOX-PRINTING- PRESSES Applcation filed December 26, 1928. Serial No. 328,458.
This invention relates to improvements in printing, and more particularly to the printing of names or characters on relatively hard surfaces, such as wood ber board and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a frame, preferably of rigid structure, and fashioned to be mounted on the roll of a press, the frame being adapted to receive, in any desired set-up, printing characters in the form of blocks or bars removably carried by the frame and arranged therein in any desired formation by the interposition of spacers, also detachably associated with the frame; there being provided lock-up means for the blocks, block carriers, type bars or spacers to maintain the same in their desired position within the frame.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacriicing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings Fig. l is a view in elevation of the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. l, viewed in the direction of the arrows, illustrating the formation or curvature of the frame and the recess in the face thereof.
Fig. 3 is a similar view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, illustrating type blocks removably inserted endwise in a type block carrier which is removably positioned within the frame from its open base.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts; l indicates a frame, preferably of metallic structure, substantially rectangular in plan and of curved formation in end elevation to enable the same to be mounted on the roll of a face of the frame is closed on three sides, open at one end and that the walls inclosing the three sides are channeled at 6. V
The printing characters are removably positioned within the frame face recess and are preferably constructed in the following manner A l To enable the setting up of any desired line, I have provided block type 7 having flanged bottoni and top edges 8 which are received 1n channels 9, in a type block carrier 10. The block type are inserted in thefcar-v rier 10 ,from the end thereof and the carrier is inV turn positioned within the frame throughthe open end of the recess 2, with the projecting ends ll of the carrier received in the respective channels 6.
It will be observed that when the carrier is positioned within the frame, the block type are lockedtherein, as they are only removable endwise of the carrier. The carrier on its opposite longitudinal edges isr flanged at l2 to lie beneath corresponding locking flangesl3 extending from the edges of a spacer bar 14, substantially T-shaped in cross section, and its ends adapted for reception n within the respective channels 6 in the frame recess side walls 5. y v Y If desirable, a type bar l5, of one piece structure, may be provided and on its face carry the desired characters, the bar extending the full width of the recess 2 and interlocking at its endsin the channels 6.
It will thus be. apparent that the structure I have provided including the type block carrier, block type spacer bars and type bar are adapted for universal adjustment within the frame, and to lock the same in their desiredr position, I provide locking blocks 16, or other means, carried by the followers 17 adjustable in slots i8 disposed lo' ngitud.i
nally of the frame. The adjusting of the set screws 19, uniting the members 16 and 17, lock the same in their' adjusted position in the slots 18 by clamping the under-surface of the member 16 to the frame face and the projection of the followers 17 to the channels of the frame hase at either side of slots 18.
I claim z- 1. A type holding frame for printing apparatus comprising a plate having a channel extending longitudinally of each side of one face thereof and arranged in parallel spaced relation, said channels each having an end opening, a type bar for positioning transversely of said plate with its ends slidably received Within said channels through their open ends, and having flanges on its side adapted for engagement with cooperating -lan es 0n next adjacent bars, a stop for limiting t ie movement of the type bar in one dipection over Said plate, and an adjustable lockin member for clamping engagement throng said plate for locking the bar from removal therefrom.
2. A type holding frame for printing apparatus comprising a plate having a channel extending longitudinally of each side of one face thereof and arranged in parallel spaced relation, said channels each open at 011e end, a type Carrier for positioning transversely of said plate with its ends slidably received within said channels through their o en ends, said carrier being formed with a ongitudinal recess opening at one end of the carrier and further provided with channels at opposite sides of said recess and having [langes on its longitudinal side. edges adapted for en agement with cooperating flanges on next a 'acent bars, type characters provided with a liase for reception within said carrier recess and flanges for reception within said carrier channels on a relative endwise movement being imparted to the parts, the reception of said carrier Within said plate channels locking said type Within said carrier, and means to adjustably and releasably lock said type carrier against movement relative to said channel and plate.
3. A type holding frame for printing appratus Comprising a relatively rigid plate provided with a recessed face surrounded on three sides with upstanding walls integral with the plate, said Walls being channeled on their inner edges, a printing character receivable within said recess through the open side thereof with the ends of the characters hav-` ing interlocking sliding engagement with said channels, spacer members receivable within said recess through the open side thereof with their ends having sliding interlocking engagement with said channels, adjacentJ longitudinal edges of said spacers having overlapping bearing contact with the adjacent corresponding edges of said printing character, and means adjustable longitudinally of said plate Within said recess and for clamping engagement with the plate for releasably locking the printing characters and spacers in their desired position.
4. type holding frame for printing apparatus comprising a. plate having a channel extending longitudinally on each side of one face thereof and arranged in parallel spaced relation, said channels each having an end opening, a type-spacer bar positionable transversely of said plate and having flanges on its side edges and having ends slidably engaged Within the channels of the plate, said side edge flanges adapted for releasable engagement with Cooperatingr portions of the side edges of next adjacent bars, and means to adjustably and releasably lock said bars against movement longitudinally of said channels and plate.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speciication.
FREDERICK B. JORGENSEN.
