Description

Feb. 28, 1933. N, L, SOLOMON I 1,899,428
HAIR HOLDING DEVICE I Filed. Nov. 5, 1932 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 28, 1938 UNIT-Eo- STATE NATHAN L. SOLOMON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK HAIR HOLDING DEVICE Application filed November The invention relates to improvements in a hair holding device in which the construction of the eye controls the movement, force and direction of the legs; and the objects of the improvements are, first to provide a hair holding device that will stay in a constant position when in thehair;-second, to get the maximum tension between the legs of the device through the unique construction of the eye; third, to keep the legs of the device in a contiguous position to each other; fourth, to eliminate the necessity of tempering the device after its manufacture because of the double spring force caused by the eye con-, struction; fifth, to increase the gripping surface of the legs of the device.
The present invention will be best understood from the following discussion of the several typical structural embodiments when considered with the illustrations of the accompanying drawing in which I Fi 1 is a side elevational view of the hair pin evice in, accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof and Fig. 3 illustrates a side elevation of a modification.
In the form according to Figs. 1 and 2,
the hair pin device comprises two elongated 1 legs or extensions 10 and 11. As shown, ex-
- tension 10 is corrugated and includes several I limb or member 18 to which is integrally connected the rectilinear intermediate and downwardly extending inclinedbrace 19.
Extendinglaterally and downwardly from the rectilinear part 16 of the lower extension is the outwardly curved terminal portion 20 to which, the downwardly and iupwardly.
curved reflexed member or limb 21 is inteneed for tempering thereof after shaping 5, 1932. Serial No. 641,330.
grally connected and the inclined rectilinear brace 19 constitutes a common instrumentality interconnecting the opposing reflexed porthe reflexed portions of which such as 18 w and 21 together with their associated curved ends '17 and 20, by reason of their tension and resiliency provide means for normally hold- 1 ing the legs 10 and 11 in close or engaging proximity, the eye providing a convenient hinge when it is desired to separate the extensions 10 and 11 for the insertion of a desired amount of hair to be gripped and held in position'by the inner cooperating clamping faces of the extensions as is well understood. In other words, the reflexed portion 18 associated with the .brace 19 and curved portion 17 imparts a force tending to maintain extension 10 in a downwardly direction while the opposed reflexed and curved por- 5 tion 21 together with the brace 19 and curved. portion 20 imparts a force tending to urge the lower extension 11 in an upwardly di-. rection. In this way, the companion extensions 10 and 1 1 are normally held closely juxtaposed and by reason of the peculiar and irregular shape of the eye of the hair device of the character referred to due to opposing spring action by the reflexed portions the according to the invention is obviated.
In the form shown in Fig. 3, the upper leg or extension 10, instead of being undulating or corrugated is preferably made straight. In other structural aspects, the construction shown in Fig. 3 is similar to the earlier form illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
According to the embodiments of Figs. 2 and 3, the lower extension terminates in a free rectilinear portion 22 and the upper extension 10 terminates in a free inclined and diverging portion 23, the portions 22 and 23 forming suitable throat or the like for receiving the strands of hair to be subsequently gripped by the companion extensions If desired, it is within the province of the invention to make the extensions of the type shown in Figs. 3 sli htly convexed curving longitudinally and is well understood. H
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is adapted to fulfill the objects stated, it is to, be understood thatit is not intended to confine the invention to the one form of embodiment herein'shown and described, as certain changes in the shape, size and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit oi the invention or the scope claims:
I claim 1. A hair holding device comprising a pair of relative movable, parallel legs and an enlarged eye portion connecting the correisposed side by side as sponding ends of said leg portions, said eye ortion comprising .two curved limbs mergmg into said leg portions and a straight por-' tion common to and connecting said limbs.
2. A hair holding device comprising a pair of relative movable, parallel legs and an enlarged eye portion connecting the corresponding ends of said leg portions, said eye portion comprising two curved limbs merging into said leg portions and a straight inclined portion common to and connecting said limbs.
3. 'A, hair holding device comprising a pair of relative movable, parallel legs and an enlarged eye portion connecting the corresponding ends of said leg portions, said eye portion comprising two curved limbs mergin into said leg portions and a straight inclined said limbs, said curved limbs being oppositely disposed and coacting to hold the aforementioned legs in contacting and separable relationship.
4. In a hair holding device, the combination of, a pair of relatively elongated extensions disposed side by side, a loop shaped member lnterconnecting said extensions at one end thereof, said loop comprising diverging and curved portions, opposed reflexed curved portions integrally merging with said diverging curved portions and a unitary rectilinear partco'mmon to said reflexed curved portions and interconnecting the latter.
5. In a hair holding device, the combination of, a pair of relatively elongated movable and resilient extensions disposed side by side, a loop shaped resilient member integrally interconnecting with said extensions at one end thereof said loop comprising outwardly extending curved portions projecting from corresponding ends of said extensions, opposed reflexed curved portions merging with said outwardly extending curved portions and a remotely disposedunitary rectilinear part common to said reflexed portions and mterconnect-ing the latter.
of the subj oined portion common to and connecting 6. In a hair holding device, the combination of, a pairof closelv arranged and relamg hair gripping inner faces disposed in
