E. E. CLARK I K'TAND' Filed Feb. 29, 1932 INVENTO/f' 1h; A fro/war Patented Fa. 28,1933
I nimns'r E; CLARK, or KANSAS CITY, ivrrssonnr a ncati iifiiedrebniar 29, 1932. seriaimgsaaveoy "My invention relates to improvements in ink standsj IItf' relates particularly to "ink wells of axtype in which the ink is automatically fed from anink container into and retained at a constant'level in a dipping Well;
One of the objects of myinventionis toiprovide a novel inkfstaj nd of the kind described which is adapted to befdisposed; in :aireclining operative position, in which the ink will automatically now from the container into the dip ping well, andwhich when not'in use can be disposed in aniipright position in which the ink willfiow'baok from the dipping well, into P the container, therebypreventing an} accumue lation of sediment in the dippingwell and affording always thereto a supply of fresh'ink;
j A fu rther object of my invention is to provide a novel container having a" relatively large filling and discharge opening to enable easy access to the interior of the container for I filling or cleaning purposes. v 4 My invention provides further a novel cloe. sure forthe container opening provided with N a novel dipping well adapted for use with an ordinary pen or for the fillingof a fountain pen, the closure having an opening connectingthe dipping well with the interior of the container, the closure also being provide ed with a novel air conduit connecting the dipping" well with the container, whereby a constant level of ink is retained in the well My invention provides further novel means for releasably'holding the closure in a tightly closed position on the container, andwhich Q .1 1
1s adapted for use for assistlng 1n supporting.v
- the ink stand in its reclining operative position. e y I v My invention provides further a novel closure for the dipping opening f the dipping; 1 well. which, whenthe inkstand is moved from a l the reclining operative-position to the upright I inoperative position, will automatically move not liable to he accidentally spilled, which is totheclosed position;-v V 1 v V I .Myinvention provides still 1 further a novel ink stand which is si1nple,cheap toniake,
strongydura'ble, not likely to be easily broken or to get out of order, from which thcinkis eflicient in its operation and-from which'the mnount remains therein;
Fig; 2 is as side elevation' of the ink stand shown inFig, 1 disposed in the upright inoptainer is held clamped to ,thecontainer by means which-also serves to assist in supporting the ink stand in the reclining operat ve position inwhich it is shown.
erative position; a r c I '3 is an elevation looking at another side of the ink standshown in Fig.2.. v
- Fig, i isa reduced'longitudinal vertical sectional view of another form of my invention, inwhich' the closure for the, container has threaded connection'therewith, the ink stand being shownzinthe reclining operative position; l l Fig, v5 is a reduced end elevation of the ink 575 stand shown Fig." 7 I Similar characters of reference designate similar parts in the different views.
ReferringtoFigs. '1 to 3,1 designates an r I ink container, whichisof'any suitable ma: terial, as metal, but preferably, as shown, of glass,[and which may be of most any desired eshape: In the form shown the container I is a cylindrical body having an openingin one end preferably of the full'inner diameter 8 of the body. The open end portionof the contain-er leis provided witha peripheral gasket2whi'ch bears againstan annular peripheral flange 3.;
'4 designates. a closure for the open, end b of the container :1 consisting, preferably'of glass, as shown, or of hard rubberor similar material. The rear'side of the closure 4 is to tightly bear against the gasket 2.j
Theclosuref i is provided Tadja providedjwith' an annular flange :5 adapted I mi wits periphery with a dipping ,well 6 having at I its rear end adjacent to its bottom an open ing 7 'connnunicatinglwith the interior of the container 1;
' 1n the open position, shown in dotted lines in container 1 with two U The well has a closed top having'a holein the closed position shown in solid lines in Fig. 1, closes thedipping opening 9, and which Fig. 1, rests on a forwardly and upwardly extending projection 12, which holds the closure 11 in a position such that, when the ink stand is moved from the reclining position shown in Fig. 1 to the upright position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the closure 11. will swing by gravity to the closed position, Fig. 2. For holding the flange tightly against the gasket 2,1there is clamping member 13, the transverse portion of which engages the middle of the outer side of the closure 4..
. The arms of the clampinglmember '13 are disposedrespectively at opposite sides of the container 1 and have inwardly turned ends 14 which are respectively pivoted in eyes 15 provided respectively in the two arms 16 of a U shaped lever, the ends of the arms 16 being inwardly turned and respectively pivoted in two recesses 17 of two diametrically opposite bosses 18 forming two bearings on the periphery of the container 1.
The. transverse portion of the U lever is provided at opposite sides of the shaped legs 19 adapted to serve as supports to hold the container 1 forwardly and downwardly inclined when the container is in the operative reclining position, shown in Fig. 1. 'Between the legs 19 the lever has an arcuate portion 20 the concave side of which is adapted to embrace and support the under side of the container 1.
To permit air to enter the container 1 as ink is withdrawn from the dipping well 6, the closure 4 is provided with an air conduit which communicates with the well 6' above the opening 7, when the container is reclining,
the other end of the air conduit communi eating with the interior of the container 1 above the level of the ink therein in either the reclining or upright position of the ink stand. .Such air conduit, as shown, comprises a tube 21 having its lower end, Fig. 2, tightly secured in a hole 22 provided in the closure 4 abovethe opening 7, the tube 21 being extended from said hole 22 alongside the inner j side 'of the closure wholly forward of the plane of thefree end of the flange 5 of the 1 closure. By reason of this construction, when the closureis removed from the container 1 and laid on theflange 5, the tube 21 will be in a position in which it will be protected {positioned so as to permit of a from injury, and will also have itsupper end maximum provided a U shaped wire.
shaped thereto.
I gasket 25 against amount of ink in the container 1 without the ink overflowing into the upper end of the tube 21, when the container is reclining.
To fill the container 1 with ink, the lever arms 16 of the lever are swung from the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 2 to the position shown in dotted lines in said figure, thereby through the eyes 15 moving the U shaped clampingmember from the clamping position andfreeing the closure 4, which can then be removed. After filling the container, the closure 4 is replaced and the lever arms 16 and clamping member are swung back to the clamping position, shown in solid 'lines in'the threeFigures 1, 2 and 3. In
swinging to this position, the arms of the clamping" member 13 pass .the inwardly turned ends of the arms 16 and the arcuate portion 20 strikesthe container 1, thereby reliably holding the. closure 4 in the tightly closed position. l I
When the inkstand is to be used,it is placed in the reclining position, shown in Fig. 1, upon which the ink will flow from the container 1 through the opening 7 into the dipping well 6 until the level .of the ink in the well rises above the lower end of theair conduit tube 21,, which when thus closed will prevent air entering the container until sufficientfink has beenwithdrawn from the well to uncover the lower end of the tube 21, at which time air will passupwardly through the tube 21 into the container 1 until the ink again covers the lower end of the tube in the well 6 Due to the inclining of the container 1, whenreclining, all of the ink therein can be used therefrom, as the bottom of the well is lower than the lower side of the container.
After being. used, the ink stand is disposed in the upright position upon which the closure 11 will'automatically .close, and the ink in the well .6will run through the opening 7 back into the container 1, thus preventing the accumulation of sediment in the well and always affording a fresh supply of ink In the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the container body 23 is cylindrical, although it may be of other shapes, and is provided with an outwardly flaring ink chamber 24. The open end of the body 23 is circular and threaded externally and has fitted on it a which is adapted to hear an annular flange 26 of a closure 27, the flange being threaded internally and removably fitting the' threaded end of the container body 23. i
The closure 27 otherwiseconforms to the closure 4 being provided with the opening 7 connecting the well 6 with the container chamber 24. The well 6 has a sloping bottom, when the ink standiis reclining, as
shown, and the lower side of the chamber 24 is on the inclined. plane of'the bottom adapted, as in the other f 'neeegi'sa I i i 3:
of the well, so that all of the ink in the chamber 24 can eventually flow into the well.
The top of the well 6 is closed and provided -with the bushing 8, corresponding to the bushing 8 of the first described form, the
bushing having pivoted to it awclosure 11 orm ofmy inven tion to automatically close when the ink stand is disposed upright with the closure 27 at the top, -The closure 27 is, also provided with an air tube conduit 21 disposed in the closure 27 in :the same manner as has been described withreference to the form shown in Fig; 1.. As shown in FigsJl and 4, the end of thetube 21, which is in the ink container, upwardly tapers, which'p'revents the forming of a drop of ink at this end of 3 the tube when ink, fiowsthroughthe tube 21 from the' dripping well 6 into the container, when the ink stand is turned from the reclining to the upright position.
In the form shown in Figs. 4: and 5, to fill the container 23 itis but necessary to'unscrew therefrom the closure 27. 1
\Vhen the closure 27 is screwed onto the container, the screw threads hold the closure tightly against the container. i I 7 As in the other form of myinvention when the container 27 is reclining, as shown in Fig; 4, the ink will flow into'the well 6 until its level therein covers the lower end of the air tube 21, and this level will be maintained shown in Fig. 5 ,1s provided with two periph-' eral lugs'28 at opposite sides respectively of I the dipping well 6, which lugs are adapted to rest on the surface ofthe support for the ink stand; i
I do'not limit myjinvention to the structures shown and described,;as modifications other than shownmay'be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without dejparting from the sp rit of my invention.
