DRIVING ATTACHMENT FOR MIXING BOWLS Filed July 28, 1931 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 gnventoz I0 Patented Feb. 21', 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT ori-Icev PATRICK J'. FITZGERALD, OFv TORRINGTON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE FITZ- GERALD MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF TORRINGTON, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORA- TION OF CONNECTICUT DRIVING ATTACHMENT FOR MIXING BOWLS Application led July 28,
This invention relates to improvements in mixing bowls, and particularly concerns a driving device for `connecting the' beater mechanism and the bowl.
One of the features of the present invention is a separable driving device which 1s operated from the beater mechanism and itself operates to rotate the mixing bowl.
Another feature of the present invention is a construction of the beater mechanism by which a power driven mechanism receives a bowl driving attachment which operates to rotate the bowl so that all parts of the contents of a bowl are operated upon by an eccentrically mounted mixer.
Other features ofthe invention will appear in the course of the following description in conjunction with the drawings.
In these drawings is set forth an illustrative form of construction of the device, and
Figure 1 is a plan view of the mixing bowl and driving attachment, with parts of the driving mechanism of the beater Vshown in section.\
Figure 2 is a view in section on line 2-2a of Figure 1 of the bowl and driving attachment, and on line 2--2b of the beater mechanism, showing the assemblage of these parts in their relative operating positions.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the supporting bowl for the driving attachment. y
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the housing plate for. the beater mechanism.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary section substantially on line 5-5 of Figure 2.
In the drawings, having a base 10 and a column 11 upon which is mounted the motor M for driving the beaters. The stand likewise has asocket 12 for receiving the pin 13 of the bowl B. The motor M is mounted with a vertical axis and has its shaft 14 extending downwardly into a gear. housing 15 having a bottom closing plate 16. Within this housing the shaft 14 carries a pinion 17 in mesh with a large gear 18 rotatably mounted on a sleeve 19 supported in the housing and having its open end exposed below the plate 16.
A beater assembly comprising the U- a stand is illustrated 1931. Serial No. 553,629.
The beater attachment has a central bolt portion 40 having a stirrup 41 at its upper end provided with a pin 42. Surrounding this bolt is a sleeve 43 having a gear 44 fixed at its upper end and a driving wheel 45 fixed at its lower end, and being provided with a groove by whichv it may rest on the curled upper edge Ba of the bowl B. A spacingwasher 46 permits the free rotation of the assembly 43, 44, 45, and is held in position by a bolt 40.
lIn operation, as the motor M revolves, the motor shaft 14 and pinion 17 are driven and therewith the large gear 18 which transmits its movement through the sleeve 19 to the bushing 25. of the right hand beater in Figure 2, and the latter in turn delivers its movement through gear 22 to gear 23 and nut 47 on the lower end of the` tered thereon.
It isvobvious that the invention is not limited to the form of construction but that such may be modified in many ways within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A mixer includingr a revolubl supported bowl, a beating device comprising a fixed member having a horizontal plate, a beater supported by said member and a first gear rotated with said beater, spaced upturned ears on said plate, a pivot member supported between said ears, a revoluble shaft mounted on said pivot member, a
' second gear on said shaft in mesh with said first gear, and a driving member on said shaft resting on the edge of said bowl.
2. A mixer including a revolubly supported bowl, a beating device comprising a fixed member having a horizontal plate, a beater supported by said member and a first gear rotated with said beater, spaced upturned ears on said plate, a pivot member gravitationally supported vbetwebn said vears and including a spindle extension, a hollow revoluble shaft on said spindle, a second gear on said shaft in mesh with said first gear, and a driving member on said shaft gravitationally resting on the attaching of said bowl, whereby said pivot member, shaft, gear and driving member may be removed by lifting the parts from said ears and bowl.
3. The combination with a mixer including a. frame, a beating device comprising plural beaters with driving means for one beater mounted on said frame and intermeshinu gears on said beaters, and a bowl revolubly mounted on said frame, of a driving member resting on the edge of the bowl, and a supporting and driving connection between one of said intermeshing gears and said` driving member, said connection having a pivotal mounting on said frame whereby it may be moved about a horizontal axis to present said driving member into and out of engagement with said bowl, and the member is held by gravity in contact with said bowl during operation.
4. The combination with a mixer including a frame, a. beating device comprising a member fixed to said frame and a plurality of beaters journaled in said member and intermeshing gears on said beaters, and a bowl revolubly supported on said frame, of a driving member resting on the edge of said bowl, a shaft having a demountable journal bearing on said fixed member and connected to said driving member, and a gear on said shaft adapted to mesh with one of said intermeshing gears, said journal bearing permitting said shaft to rock about a horizontal axis so that the driving member may gravitationally engage the edge of the bowl and said shaft gear may mesh with said intermeshing gear and whereby the driving member may be swung upwardly out of engagement with the bowl and thereby said shaft gear be moved out of mesh with said intermeshing gear.
5. A mixer including a frame, a beating device comprising a member fixed to the frame and a beater journalled in said member, a bowl revolubly` supported on the frame, a driving member gravitationally resting on the edge ofthe bowl, a support on said fixed member, a shaft connected to said driving member, releasable means for connecting the beater and shaft in driving relationship, a journal device in which said shaft may rotate and having means for gravtationally engaging said support for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis, whereby the shaft, device and member may be removed by simple lifting from the bowl and support.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
PATRICK J. FITZGERALD.
