Description

Feb. 21, 1933. M DOMNEGO BOOKMARK Filed may 25, 1951 Patented Feb. 21, 1.933
UNITED STATES Momz DOMENEGO, or vrENNA, AUSTRIA BOOKMARK Application filed May 25, 1931, Serial No. 539,874, and in Austria May 31, `1930.
This invention relates to an improved bookmark which is adapted by means of a wire clamp or fastener to be fixed in position in the crotch between adjacent leaves or gatherings of any book or pamphlet, irrespective of whether the latter be stitched, made up in pamphlet form, or bound. Bookmarks of this type are already known, but have the disadvantage that they clasp the lo book at one point only and are thus apt to damage the latter. These known types possess moreover outwardly projecting portions, and are therefore apt to become easily bent and deformed, and to be thereby rendered useless. The bookmark provided by the present invention obviates these disadvantages by arranging that the clasp for attachment in a book is made` of springwire so doubled or looped that the two free ends or Shanks are disposed adjacent to each other for the greater part of their length. In the loop of the clamp thus formed there are attached in a known manner one or more ribbons or bands adapted to be inserted between pages 25 of the book to which the mark is attached. In the case of bound books this clamp is accommodated entirely within the book, while in the case of pamphlets or stitched books a short straight piece of wire remains visible in close contact with the back of the book.
Two forms of the bookmark in accordance with the invention'are illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, in which Figs. 1 and 2 show the two said forms in perspective, while Fig. 3 shows also in perspective the manner in which the bookmark is attached to a paper-cover book.
The clamp consists, in both forms, of a piece of spring wire a which is so bent in one plane, forming a loop b, that the two shanks c and d of the wire a run parallel and adjacent to each other, as illustrated, so that they exert a clamping eect upon a body inserted between them not at one point only but throughout the length of their parallel 50 portions. These two shanks can moreover be ribbed or otherwise roughened so as to increase the clamping effect.
A suitable ribbon for insertion between the leaves -of a book is attached to the loop b of` the Wire clamp; this ribbon is denoted by the reference character The described bookmark is fixed in position in an open book by sliding the clamp from preferably the top of the book along the crotch between the two pages at which the book is opened in such a manner that the one of the shanks of the clamp remains visible to the reader, while the other shank comes into contact with the back of the book or stitched gathering. In the case of stitched (paper cover) books and pamphlets the loop b connecting the two shanks c and d of the clamp is preferably disposed facing lthe reader, so that after the closing of the book,- only a short piece of wire remains visible. In connection with bound books the loop b can also be turned away from the reader, since on the closing of the book this loop can be accommodated in the space between the back of the gatherings and the back of the binding, thus remaining invisible.
For the purpose of facilitating the attachment of the bookmark it is advisable to bend the free end of the shank c below the loop b away from the end e of the shank d. It is also advisable to make the shank d somewhat longer than the shank c, for the same purpose, and also to make the latter shank straight, so that the clamp of the bookmark may beV lronoilriable on the opening and closing of the The described clamp can also be equipped in a known manner with a number of ribbons, and the shanks c and l can also be provided on their contacting surfaces with notches adapted to check the withdrawal of the clamp when once placed in position. Finally, the connecting loop b between the shanks c and d can be provided with a separate eye adapted for the reception of a ribbon or ribbons. u
1. A bookmark comprising a clamp consisting of spring wire bent in one plane and having a straight shank, a loop, and a sec--v ond shank, the said loop and the said second M shank lying on the same side of the said straight shank, the said two shanks being substantially parallel to each other and adapted to exercise a clamping effect upon an object inserted therebetween along their common line of Contact, and at least one flexible marker attached to the said loop and adapted to be inserted between the pages of a book.
2. A bookmark as claimed in claim l in which the free end of the said second` shank is bent away from the said strai ht shank in the said plane, for the purpose o facilitating the positioning of the said clamp.
In testimony whereof I aiX my signature.
