Description

Feb. 7, 1933. F. c. RUPPEL CLOSURE FOR RAIATORS AND THE LIKE Filed Dec. 18. 1929 ATTORNEYS Patented Feb. 7, 1933 UNITED STATES PATEIWI ori-Icav FREDERICK CHARLES RUI'IEI., or GRANDRAPIDS, MICHIGAN, lAssIGNoR kTo lvv. B. f-
f .IARvIs ooMPANY, or GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN CLOSURE FOR RADIATORS AND THE LIKE Application filed December 18, A1929. 'Serial No. 414,890.
The main object of this invention is to provide a closure for radiators which is well adapted for use on radiators having the types of necks now in quite extensive use and one which is securely retained upon the neck.
A further object is to provide a structure having these advantages which may be very quickly applied to or mounted upon the neck.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims. i
A structure which embodies the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of a radiator cap structure embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view partially in vertical section on line 22 of Figs. l and 4.
Fig. 3 is an inverted view of the closure removed from the radiator neck.
Fig. 4: is a plan view of the neck, the coacting relation of the closure, keeper lugs and locking pin being indicated by dotted lines.
In the embodiment illustrated, 1 represents the radiator shell of a motor vehicle and 2 the radiator having a filling neck 3 projecting through the radiator shell. The neck is provided with an inturned flange 4 providing a seat for the gasket or packing 5. On the edge of the flange I form segmental, opposed cammed keepers 6 having depending stops 7 at corresponding ends thereof.
The closure body member 8 is ohambered to receive the projecting end of the neck and rest upon the shell. The gasket 5 is clamped between the body member and the neck.
The body member 8 is provided with an annular depending flange-like latch member 9 having keeper engaging lugs l() struck outwardly therefrom and engageable with the keepers by a rotative movement of the body member on the neck, thereby forcing the body member downwardly into clamping engage ment with the gasket 5 and firmly seating it on the shell.
The body member is provided with an upwardly facing gasket seat 11 for the cap gasket 12. The locking pin 13 is arranged through the bottom of the gasket seat to engage the stop end of one of the keepers 6; that is, it engages the end of the keeper in opposed relation to the lug, thereby locking the body member against rotative movement on the neck and preventing its removal without removing the locking pin.
The cap 14 is provided with a vertical pivotl 15 mounted for vertical and rotative movement, the cap structure illustrated being that` of the copending application of Frederick C. Ruppel and Michael B. Andrie. As the particulardetails of the cap do not constitute a part of this invention, they are not illustrated herein.
f My improved closure is wellY adapted for use on radiator necks of the type now in eX- tensive use, that is, radiator Vnecks having cammed keepers with which-the cap is directly engaged by a rotative movement. l
My improvements provide a structure in which the 'capis locked to the vehicle and an effective finish is provided for the shell.
I have illustrated and described my improvements ina Very practical embodiment thereof. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other adaptations or modifica* Vtions as it is believed that this disclosure will neck and engaging said gasket thereon yand having an annular latch member depending within the neck and provided with keeper engaging lugs struck outwardly therefrom, said body member being provided lwith an annular upwardly facing gasket seat, a locking pin arranged through the bottom of said upwardly facing gasket seat i of said closure body member to engage the stop end of one of said keepers whereby the said closure body .mem-
no j
ber is locked against rotation on said neck, and a cap mounted on said body member.
2. The combination of a neck having oppositely disposed segmental cammed keepers, said keepers having .stops at corresponding ends thereof, a closure body member chambered to receive the end of said neck and having an annular latch member depending within the neck and provided with keeper engaging lugs struck outwardly therefrom, a locking pin arranged to lie in the path of and engage the stop end of one of said keepers whereby the said closure body member is positively locked against rotation onsaid neck, and a cap mounted on said body member.
.3. 'Thecombination of a neck having segmental cannned keepers, said keepers having stops at corresponding ends thereof, a gasket arranged on said neck, a closure member engaging said gasket on said neck and provided with keeper engaging lugs coacting with said keepers on said neck, a locking pin on .said body member lying inthe path of and engaging the stop end of one 'of said keepers whereby the closure body member is positively locked upon the neck, and a cap mounted on said body member. p
4. The combination of a neck provided with keepers, a closure body member provided with lugs engageable with said keepers by rotatitve movement of the body member, a gasket interposed between said body member and neck, said keepers being cammed sothat the body member is clamped upon the gasket by the engaging movement thereof, a locking pin on said body member'lying in the path of and engaging one of said keepers in opposed relation to one of said body member lugs whereby the body member is positively locked against rotation upon the neck, and a cap on said body member.
5. The combination of a neck provided with keepers, a closure body member engageable with said keepers by rotative movementof the body member, said body member having an upwardly facing gasket seat, a locking pin arranged through the bottom of said upwardly facing gasket seat to lie in the path of andengage one of said keepers whereby said closure body member is positively locked against rotation on said neck, a gasket arranged in said gasket seat over said pin, and a cap mounted on said body member to coact with said gasket. f
6. The combination of a neck provided with keepers having stops at corresponding ends thereof, a closure body member provided with keeper engaging lugs coacting with said keepers on said neck, a locking pin on said body member lying in the path of and engaging the stop end of one of said keepers whereby the closure body y member is positively locked 'upon the neck, and a capk mounted on said body member.
7 .n The combination of a neck provided
