Description
Feb. 7, 1933. B ANDRE 1,896,271
CLOSURE Filed Dec. 14, 1929 77 I INVENTOR M'Mda/ i3. rid/"fa Patented Feb. 7, 1933 MICHAEL B. ANDRIE, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN,,ASSIGNOR TO i3. J'Anvrs coM- PANY, F GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN cLoscnn Application filed December 14, 1929. Serial No. 413,996.
The main objects of this invention are to provide a closure for radiator necks, oil tanks and the like which may be quickly applied or removed, is effective in sealing the opening and is very compact.
A further object is to provide a closure having these advantages which is simple and economical in its parts and at the same tlme strong and durable.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary vertical section through a radiator closure embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an inverted view of the cap re- 'moved from the radiator neck.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the radiator neck.
Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the latch memher.
In the embodiment illustrated, 1 represents a motor vehicle radiator and 2 its shell. The filler neck 3 is provided with an inturned flange 4: at its upper end conformed to provide a seat for the gasket 5. On the inner edge of the flange 4 I form opposed segmental cammed keepers 6 having depending stops 7 at corresponding ends thereof.
The cap 8 is provided with an annular rib or bead-like gasket seat 9 opposed to the gasket seat of the neck and adapted to engage the gasket when the cap is closed. The cap is chambered to receive the upwardly projecting flange 10 on the shell 2 surrounding the neck 3 and has a central recess 11 and a stud 12 depending centrally of the recess.
The inverted cupped latch member 13 is a reciprocating fit within this recess, the latch member having a central opening 14 therein to receive the stud 12. Keeper engaging lugs 15 are struck outwardly from the side wall 16 of the latch member. Tongue-like springs 17 are struck downwardly from the top of the latch member.
These spring members are supported by the supporting disk or plate 18 which is clamped upon the end of the stud 12 by means of the screw 19, a spring washer 20 being arranged between the head of the screw and the supporting plate. The supporting plate preferably has an annular-shoulder at 21. The latch member is thus yieldingly supported and its supporting springs are well protected.
The gasket 5 embraces thelatch member and is retained in assembled relation thereon by means of the lugs 15; that is, it cannot drop ofl from the cap.
The stud 12 is non-circular, rectangular in the embodiment illustrated, the opening 14 in the latch member being correspondingly shaped so that its rotation relative to the cap is prevented.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in a very practical embodiment as adapted for use on automobile radiators. I have not attempted toillustrate or describe various other modifications or adaptations as it is believed this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt the same as may be desired;
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: v r I 1. In a closure, the combination of a neck having an inturned flange providing a gasket seat and having oppositely disposed segmental cammed keepers on the edges thereof, a cap having'an annular rib-like gasket seat opposed to said gasket seat on said neck and provided with an internal recess and a stud disposed centrally of the recess, an inverted cupped latch member arranged in said recess and having a central opening to receive said stud and keeper engaging lugs struck outwardly from its side walls, said latch member also having a plurality of integral tongue-like spring members struck downwardly from the top thereof, and a supporting plate mounted on said stud on said cap in supporting relation to said spring members.
2. In a closure, the combination of a neck provided with keepers, a cap-having an internal recess and a stud disposed centrally of the recess, an inverted cupped latch mem- F100 ber arranged in said recess and having a central opening to receive said stud and keeper engaging lugs struck outwardly from its side walls, sa1d latch member also having a plu- 5 rality of integral tongue-like spring members struck downwardly from the top thereof, and a supporting plate mounted on said stud on said cap in supporting relation to said spring members.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand. 4
MICHAEL B. ANDRIE.
