RADIO APPARATUS Application filed September 7, 1929. Serial No. 390,908.
My invention relates to the insulating, adjusting and regulating of radio aerial or antennae wires.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a general sid view of my improved apparatus and Figure 2 is a detail view of a portion thereof.
In my new construction the antenna or aerial wire A, is attached at one end to an upright post or other fixed support B, through the medium of an interposed insulating element C, extending therefrom any desired distance to a specially constructed housing D, which is composed of insulating material,
such as rubber or porcelain.
I preferably make this housing D, substantially egg shaped in form so it will be widest at the centre and will readily shed water, but other shapes may be used.
The dimensions of the housing at its center is of sufficient width and proportions to accommodate an adjusting reel E, which is located within the body thereof.
The housing D, is constructed with a central chamber G, of the proper size to receive the reel E. This chamber may be in the form of an opening extending from one side of the housing to the other.
Passing from side to side of the housing through the chamber G, is a turning bar or rod H, which extends through the centre of the reel E, to which it is secured so the reel will turn with the rod or bar. The bar H, is journaled in bearings J, on opposite sides of the housing, D.
At one end of the bar H, is attached a turning element H for readily turning the bar and the reel E, secured to it.
The end of the bar H, opposite the turning element H is threaded and provided with a wing screw-nut K, which when screwed up presses against the housing and locks the turning of the bar and reel. A washer is, may also be used.
The bar H, is provided with a collar J which presses against the housing when the wing screw-nut is turned.
At one end of the housing D, is a metallic thimble L, which has an opening Z, through which the aerial or antenna wire A, passes into the interior of the chamber G, and is attached to the reel E, on which it is wound and unwound when desired. A set screw 8, is provided which secures the aerial or antenna wire A, to the thimble when screwed down. The metallic thimble L, is also provided with an inlet 5, to receive a wire R, leading to the rest of the radio device, not shown. This lead in wire R, is held in place and in elect-rical connection with the antenna wire through the medium of the metallic thimble and a set screw 8.
At the end of the housing D, opposite the thimble L, is a hook M, for attaching the housing to the upright post or fixed support 0. A spring element S, is first attached to the hook M, and connected with the post 0.
In operation the aerial or antenna wire is wound on the reel in any desired lengths suflicient to supply it for the distance between the supports. The wire is then passed out through the thimble L, and connected with the insulating element C. The housing is connected up with the structure 0 the bar H, and reel E, are turned to supply the desired length of antenna wire. Any slack is taken up and the wing screw-nut is turned to keep it taut. The set screws may then be used to firmly hold the elements in place.
Vb at I claim as my invention is:
1. In a radio apparatus of the character described an aerial antenna wire terminating at each end thereof in insulating elements; fixed supports therefor, an oblong element composed of insulating material interposed between the two ends of the antenna, having an interior compartment housing a reel on which is wound the antenna wire, said reel having exterior means for operating the same and means for connecting and disconnecting said aerial antenna with a wire leading to sending or receiving instruments.
2. In a radio device of the character set forth, an antenna wire; insulating elements attached to both terminals thereof; fixed supports for said antenna wire and elements; a housing of insulating material interposed in the line of said antenna between said terminals having a closed compartment; a winding reel Within the closed compartment; an exterior handle for operating said reel Within said housing; a metal plug at the inner end of said housing; an entrance through said plug for the antenna Wire; a lead in wire and socket therefor in said plug; means for securing said lead in Wire to the plug and means for attaching the antenna to the plug.
