Description
UN TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PATRICK LYONS, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN BELT-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 189,478, dated April 10, 1877; application filed February 10, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. PATRICK LYoNs, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Belt-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my belt-fastener, and
Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are plan views of modifications of the same.
This invention relates to fasteners or clasps for belts used on shafting; and it consists in two fastening-plates,constructed and attached substantially as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, A and B designate two twin plates of metal, and C D the two ends of a belt clasped or fastened thereby. Plate A is provided at one end with several transverse slots, at, and at the other end with several raised tongues, 00, and plate B is provided with complementary slots 1) and tongues 12. Tongues b are bent downward instead of upward. In fastening the belt, tongues 00 are passed through slots 0 in the said end 0, and through the said slots b. In like manner tongues b! are passed in the opposite direction through end D and slots a.
When thus interlocked, the strain upon said belt causes them only to draw tighter.
Figs. 3 and 4 show a modification of my invention.
Each plate is provided with a supplemental tongue or brace, e, which passes through slots ff of the other plate, so as to interlock with the intervening metal strip f Said braces extend in opposite directions, and their office is to relieve tongues a/ b of a part of the strain.
The number of tongues and slots employed may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention. The strongest quality of iron is preferably employed in the construction of the plates above described.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a belt-fastener, the combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of the plate A, provided at one end with transverse slots at, and at the other end with raised tongues a, and the plate B, provided with slots b and downwardly-bent tongues b, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
PATRICK LYON S.
