Description

' Jan 3, 1933. R CQRSON 1,893,198
' INDICATING DEVICE Filed May 26, 1952 INVENTOR:
ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 3, 1933 UNITED STATES P'AT m OFFICE f RALPH conson, or ASHLAND nnw. JERSEY mmcnrme nnvron" Application filed May 26,
and where only a periodic inspection is held.
Another object of my invention is to provide a means of determining the uantity of liquid in a container, such as a 're bucket, which is readily detachable from the bucket and which in no way impairs the efficiency of the function of the bucket in an emergency.
An additional object of my invention is to facilitate the inspection of containers of liquids in that containers not readily accessible can be reliably checked at a considerable visual distance.
A further object of my invention is to provide an indicating device so reliable in operation that its use will be extended to the further enhancement of safety measures and so simple in construction that its manufacture is inexpensive and its permanence of certain action indefinitely prolonged.
Additional features and advantages of the construction of the device will more fully appear in the specification in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a. perspective view of the indicating device with the visual indicator full in observable position.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the indicating device shown attached to a water fire bucket.
Figure 3 is a front elevational View of the device with the visual indicator low in observable position.
Figure 4 is a rear elevational view of the device in the position shown in Figure 3.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawing one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and 1932. Serial no. 613L658. I
reliable results, although it is to be understood that'the various instrumentalities of WlllCll my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my inven N tion is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
In the drawing wherein similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the drawing, '1 designates a fire bucket on the rimof which the device is suspended by the hook 2. The hook 2 is formed on the upper end of the wall 3 which is bent into-a U shape as at 4 and terminates in the spaced vertical limbs 5 and 6. The vertical limbs 5' and '6 project beyond the rim of the bucket and carry the plate 7 on which is inscribed the word low. Toone of the vertical limbs 5 or 6 is slidably attached the float 8 by means of the guide 9. The guide 9 to which the float 8 is, rigidly attached moves freely in a vertical, rectilinear manner on the limb to which it is attached. A plate 10 has inscribed on it the word full and is rigidly attached to the float 8 and moves freely with P the float 8 on the. limbs 5 and 6 by means of the guides 11 and 12.
The manner of operating the device described in Figures 1 to 4 is briefly as follows: Assuming that the water in the bucket 1 is low, the fioat 8 descends with it on the limbs 5 or 6 and carries with it the plate 10 on which the word full is inscribed, thus causing i the latter to disappear behind the wall of the bucket. The float 8 and the plate 10 are constrained to a truly vertical rectilinear motion by means of the guides 9, 11 and 12. When the plate 10 has thus descended into the bucket 1 the wall 7 on which the word low is inscribed is exposed to visual observation. In Figure 2 the range of movement of the float is represented from its lower position at 8 to its upper position at 8'. When the bucket is replenished with water the float 8 rises carrying the plate 10 with it to conceal the word low on the plate 7 and to expose the word full.
I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or the. essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate thev scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: r
1. An indicating device comprising a vertical arm adapted to be secured within a con tainer, the upper end of said arm extending above the rim of said bucket and bearing any desired indicia, a float slidableon said arm, a shield carried by said float and bearing other indicia, whereby the indicia on the.
upper end of said arm are alternately con cealed and exposed by the rise and the fall of said float owing toithe rise and the fall of the liquid in said container.
2. A device for indicating the level of a liquid in a container comprising a substantially U-shaped bracket adapted to be secured to the rim of and to extend downward: ly into said container, a float slidable on one of the limbs ofsaidU-shaped bracket, the upper rim of said limb projecting above the rim of said container and bearing any desired indicia, and a shield carried by and slidable with said float and bearing other indicia, whereby the indiciaon the upper end of said limb is alternately concealed and eX- posed by the rise and the fall of said float owing to the rise and the fall of the liquid in said container. Y i
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature.
