Description

3m. 3, 1933. c. RQTHSCHILD TOOTHBRUSH Filed Aug. 23, 1950 INVENTOR CLAUDIA ROT/ifiQ/f/LD BY ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 3, 1933 UNITED STATES CLAUDIA ROTHSGHILD, OF OCEAN PAR-K, CALIFORNIA 'IOOTHBRUSH Application filed August 23, 1930. Serial No. 477,23Q.
My invention relates to tooth brushes, and the objects of my invention are: first, to provide a tooth brush in which the bristles are arranged substantially in the form of a flattened sphere, forming substantially two sets of bristles, one at the edge or narrow portion and the other at the flattened portion of the brush, the different portions of the brush being adapted to be used in different ways for cleaning diiferent portions of the teeth in different parts of the mouth; second, to provide a tooth brush in which the brush portion is very short and so shaped that it does not extend beyond, but may be confined to, the area desired to be cleaned; third, to provide such a tooth brush which may be easily handled in its various cleaning positions; fourth, to provide a tooth brush that will fit the curvature of the inside of the 0 mouth; and, fifth, to provide a tooth brush that is small and compact, simple and economical of construction, and one which will not readily deteriorate.
With these and other objects in View as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application, in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of the head of my tooth brush taken on the line 11 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof taken at 22 of Fig. 1; and, Fig. 3 is a perspective view thereof showing particularly the relation of the handle thereto.
Like characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the views of the drawing.
The head 1, of my tooth brush, is substantially disc shaped and is provided with bris- 5 tles 2. Secured to, and preferably formed as a part of, the head 1 is ahandle member 3. The head 1, in this instance, is substantially 'in the form of a flattened sphere having two flattened sides 1a and 1b and a rounded bead 0 or edge portion 10. The bristles 2, preferably in the form of tufts, are positioned or secured to the head in two distinct groups or sets, the group 2a being positioned on the rounded edge portion 10 and the group 26 being positioned at the flattened side 16. These bristles may be secured as tufts to the head, or may be molded in or otherwise se cured to the head. It will be here noted that the bristles are relatively short and are all of substantially the same length; thus, the ends of the bristles positioned on the rounded edge portion 10 will be similar in outline to the cor-responding portion of the head and will merge with the bristles of the fiattened side of the head. The completed brush is shaped substantially as a flattened sphere except that there are no bristles at the top flattened side, nor immediately adjacent the handle.
The curvature of the brush is such that it fits easily the curvature of the inside of the mouth. The bristles at the rounded edge may be used to brush in the direction of the edge or transversely. It will be noted that such use provides small cleaning areas or 5 groups of bristles which may reach any portion of the teeth or spaces between the same. It will be noted that the outer ends of the tufts of bristles need not be tufted or rounded, as in the ordinary tooth brush, to reach spaces between the teeth. The flat sides of my brush may be used for cleaning either the inner or outer sides of the teeth, but primarily for the outer side since it covers a greater area. '85
The handle member 3 extends outwardly from the portion 10 of the head intermediate and parallel to the planes of the opposite flat sides 1a and 1b. The portion 3a of the handle adjacent the head, is long, slender and round and widens out into the handle portion 3?). The portion 36 is, in section, in the form of a flattened hexagon, and is provided on the flat sides thereof with knurling to aid in gripping or holding the same. At the extreme or outer end of the handle 3 is a hole 30 for hanging the tooth brush to a hook or the like.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not Wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims. v 1 7 Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- V 10 ters Patent is: Y I
' 1; In a tooth brush; a disc shaped head" having a reduced handle portion extending from one portion of the edge and in substantially the plane of the head, and bristles ex- 'tending from the remaining portion of the edge and; from-a fiat side of thehead, the ends-of all offthe bristles forming a substan-v tially unbroken cleaning surface.
' 2. In; a.tooth "brush,-a handle having a 2 headat oneend, said head having a flattened I side andgan edge adjacent thereto, and bristles extending: from the flattened side and edge, the ends of all of the bristles forming substantially an unbroken cleaning surface.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, California this 15th day of August1930.
