SEPARABLE KNOB LOCK Filed May 17. 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Jan. 3, 1933 JOHN H. SHAW, OI NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR T SABGENT OOIPANY,
on NEWy HAVEN, CONNECTICUT SEPABABLE KNOB LOCK Application led Iay 17,
My invention relates to separable knob locks, and more particularly to such locks in which the disassemblin of the lock parts is under the control of a ey.
It is highly desirable in certain instances to provide cylinder, or other lock mechanisms, which may be readily disassembled from a lock case or the like, in order that the combination of the lock may be changed, or for other purposes. Locks ofthis type, as heretofore known, have generally been provided with secondary locking systems which secure, for example, a key plug and pin tumbler mechanism in the lock case, the secondary locking system being under the control of a key. Each in tumbler of the previously known locks has been provided with a plurality of breaks or shears, one set of shears being brought into alignment with the surface of the key plug by a suitable key during the normal operation of the lock, and a second or different set being brought into alignment in the secondary locking system by another key to permit the operation of this system and the withdrawal of the lock mechanism from its case. lIt is, in general, an object of the present invention to provide key controlled means for securing a locking mechanism in a case which is of simpler construction than the usual lock of this character andless apt to get out of order Another object of the invention is to pro` vide a detachable lock mechanism, the detachment of which is key controlled and in which the in tumblers, or such other means as is use to ensure that the lock may not be operated except by a proper key, are adjusted in precisel the same manner when the lock is being etached as they are during the normal operation of the lock thus obviating the necessit for any special forms of pin tumbler or other mechanisms as heretofore have been necessary in locks of this character.
As still another and general object of my invention, propose to provide a detachable 1928. Serial No. 278,545.
lock mechanism in which the detachment of the mechanism is controlled by suitable secondary locking means carried within the lock case which while out of the path of the ordinary key, may be engaged by a special key to permit thedetachment of the lock mechamsm.
In one of its more specilic aspects, the invention contemplates a detachable door lock which is in the form of a cylinder lock carrled within the handle of a door, or `the like, and provided with suitable connecting means extending throu h the shank of the handle into the main boy of the lock which is usually mortised into the door.
A further object of the invention is to provide a detachable door lock of the latter type in which the handle of the door containing the lock is made up out of one or more separable parts which, while ordinarily locked against relative movement to the main body of the handle, may be detached therefrom upon the insertion of a proper key in the lock, whereupon the lock may be freely withdrawn from the interior of the handle.
A still further object of the invention resides in an improved form of lock mechanism of the above type in which there are no exposed parts which may be tampered with by one seeking to force the lock.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combination of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.-
In the drawings,
Fig. lis a view showing a portion of a door, having a lock in accordance with my invention, mounted thereon;
Fig. 2 is a view along line 2-2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a sectional view along line 3-3 Fig. l, but on an enlarged scale; Fig. 4 is a sectional view along line 4-4 of Fig. 2, but on an enlarged scale;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view alon line 5 5 of Fig. 1, but on an enlarged sca e; and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view along line 6--6 of Fig. 8.
will now describe my invention in connection with the preferred embodiment thereof shown in the drawings, wherein my im proved form of separable knob lock is shown in the form of a cylinder lock carried in the handle of a. door, although it will be understood as the description of the invention proceeds that in certain aspects the invention is not limited to use in the handle of a door or the like, but has a Wider and more general scope.
Referring then to the drawings, the reference numeral 7 indicates in general a door having mortised therein a. lock\ case 8, provided with a pivoted latch bolt 9, to which is connected a stem 10, provided at an inner end with laterally extending parts 11 and 12 having thereon lugs 13 and 14 which may be engaged by rollbacks 15, 16 and 17, in a manner to be pointed out hereinafter, to retract the latch bolt 9, while the latter is normallyurgedinto protracted position by means of compression spring 18 received on and surrounding stem 10, one end of spring 18 being in contact with latch 9 and the opposite end in Contact with transverse part 19 of case 8.
On either side of door 7 are escutcheon plates 2O and 21, in which are mounted, preferably in a permanent manner, collars 22 and 23 having tightly received therein a tubular element 24, which is secured against rotation in and extends through lock case 8 and outwardly through collars 22 and 28. Received within tube 24 at one end thereof is a shank 25 of knob 26, while in the opposite end of tube 24 is a shank 27 of knob 28, shank 27 heing provided with slots 29 and 30, in which are received talons 81 and 82 of rollback 15, while shank 25 is provided with similar slots for the reception of rollback 17.
0n the outer end of shank 27 is a disk-like flanged end 38, provided on its periphery with threads 34, received within a similarly threaded portion 35 of handle 28, relative movement between shank 27 and handle 28 being prevented by screws 36 which are received within suitable openings, partly in disk-like flange 33 and handle 28. Handle 28 is hollow and has mounted therein cylinder lock 37 provided with the usual key plug y 38 having thensual key opening 89 and a plurality of transverse openings 40, which together with the similar number of cavities 41 in cylinder case 42 contain the pin tumbler sections 48 and springs 44. One end of key plug 38 extends outwardly through a suitable opening in handle 28, while at its opposite end the key plug is secured by means of pin 45 to thimble 46, having received in a square opening therein a square rod 47 which passes through a similarly shaped opening in rollback 16 and into an opening 48 in handle 26. Key plug 38 is secured against movement in Legame an axial direction in one direction by means of flanged portion 49 of thimble 46 and in the opposite direction by means of flanged end 5G which bears against casing 42.
In order to dog rollback 16 against movement and thereby to prevent the latch 9 from being withdrawn by the use of handle 28, a pivoted lever 51 is provided in the outer wall 52 of lock case 8, lever 51 being connected by stem 53 with locking pin 54 which is supported in a transverse part 55 of lock case 8 and adapted to enter openings 59 and 60 of tube 24 and shank 27, respectively. In order to cover screws 36 and preventtampering therewith, a shroud 61 is provided extending from recess 62 in the outer end of tube 24 to the adjacent end of handle 28.
The operation of the lock mechanism described above will be readily understood from.
the foregoing description and may be briefly described as follows: The rollbacks 15, 16 and 17 are capable of independentrotary movement and the operation of any one of the rollbacks will bring one of the talons thereon into Contact with either lug 13 or 14 depending upon which direction the rollbacks are rotated, the engagement of the talons with the lugs moving stem 10 inwardly against the compression spring 18 and withdrawing the latch bolt 9 from the keeper plate in the adjacent jamb of the door. The handle 26, which will be normally on the inside of the door, through the engagement of its shank 25 with rollback 17, is free to cause the withdrawal of latch 9 at all times, while handle 28 through the connection of its shank 27 with rollback 15 is free to cause the withdrawal of latch bolt 9 at all times except when the rollback 15 is dogged against movement by locking the pin 54 when the latter has been inserted into openings 59 and 60 by the actuation of lever 51, whereupon the handle 28 is locked against movement. in this condition of the lock mechanism, the latch bolt 9 may only be actuated from the outside of the door by means of a proper key inserted into the cylinder lock mechanism.
Upon the insertion of a proper key in key plug 88, the breaks or shears of pin tumblers 43 are brought into alignment with the outer surface of key plug 88, whereupon the latter may be rotated by the key. Upon rotation of key plug 38 and thereby thimble 46 and rod 47, rollback 16 is rotated, causing the withdrawal of latch bolt 9.
Up 'to this point in the description of my invention, l have been concerned with those features of the lock mechanism which enter into the normal operation of the lock. 1t is highly desirable, however, to provide a lock mechanism which may be readily disassembied to change the combination of the lock, and for other purposes, and 1 will now describe the features of my improved form of separable knob lock which provide a suitable means to that Vendo Referring again to the drawings, it will be seen that the handle 28 comprises a main 5 body portion 63 and a separable face plate 64 which is provided on its periphery with interrupted threads 65, engaging similarly interrupted threads 66 in handle body 63, face plate 64 being normally vlocked against 10 rotary movement relative to the handle by means of plunger 67 in lock case 42, plunger 67 being urged towards face plate 64 by means of spring 68, plate 64 being provided with an opening 69 in which the plunger is normally seated, while mounted on the opposite end of plunger 67 is a disk 70, received within an opening 7l in handle 28. Lock case 42 is provided with a plurality of radially projecting ribs or lugs 72, which are received Within and seated at the bottom of openings 73 in handle 28.
lVhen it is desired to separate the parts of the handle to dismount the cylinder lock mechanism, therefrom, the operation of my improved form of separable handle lock is as follows: Key 73 is inserted in key opening 39 into the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, in which the shoulders 74 of key 73 are spaced a substantial distance from the outer face of the key plug. In this position, the notches 75 on bit 7 6 of key 73 bring the shears Vor breaks in the pin tumblers into alignment with the outer surface ofthe key plug, whereupon the key plug may be rotated in the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l. The key may now be fully inserted into the key plug, as shown in Fig. 5, bringing the end of the bit 76 into contact with the disk 70, withdrawing the plunger 67 from the opening 69 in face plate 64 and permitting the latter to be rotated to bring the threads thereon opposite the interrupted portions in the threads 65, whereupon the face plate and lock mechanism may be withdrawn in an axial direction from the handle 28. l A lock mechanism l having a diiferent arrangement of Y tumblers thereinmay be placed in the handle 28, or such other changes may be made as necessitated the dismounting of the lock, whereupon the face plate 64 may be assembled on the handle 28, and rotated into position wherein the plunger 67 enters the opening 69 in face plate 64, thus locking the face plate and cylinder lock mechanism in handle 28 against displacement, except in the manner previously described.
From the foregoing description of the nature of my invention and its mode of operation, it will be readily understood that I have provided a relatively simple detachable lock in which but a single set of pin tumbler shears or the like is necessary, and in which vthe lock mechanism actuated by the usual key is separate from and independent of the sec- 5 ondary locking means which holds the cylinin the drawings, it will be seen that the sece ondary locking mechanism is carried within the handle or door knob as an entirety, and thus there are not only no exposed parts which may be tam ered with, but the handle or knob presents the outward appearance of the usual door knob. v
