Description

Dec. 27, 1932. J. MAYES 1,892,622
PLUMB AND LEVEL Filed Feb. 27, 1928 FE]. H321. F E.
vweutoz Patented Dec. 27, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN MAYES, PORT AUSTIN, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR 'lO MAYES BROS. TOOL MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF PORT AUSTIN, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION PLUMB AND LEVEL Application filed February 27, 1928. Serial No. 257,434.
My invention relates to a combined plumb and level and it is an object of the invention to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character of light weight which may be used with any straight edge for accurately plumbing, leveling or determining an angle of 45, all as will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawing which is made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a straight edge with my invention mounted thereon and illustrating its manner of application, the straight edge being in position for use as a plumb,
Figure 2, a similar view with my device in a position to permit the straight edge to be used to determine an angle of 45 either to the left or right,
Figure 3, a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2,
Figure 4, a diagrammatic view showing the method of using the structure of Fig. 1 for determining an angle of 45, and
Figure 5, a diagrammatic view showing the method of using the structure of Fig. 2 for determining an angle of 45 to the left.
In the drawing reference character indicates a rectangular board or piece of wood having a left straight edge 11 and a right straight edge 12. A body or plate 13 in the form of an isosceles triangle is adapted to be mounted upon the straight edge in the manner shown. The said plate 13 is provided at its eoual legs or edges with integrally formed tubular vial holding members 14 and 15 in which are mounted vials 16 visible through arcuate openings 18 and 19 respectively, said vials being held in place by a, plastic composition 17. In like manner another integrally formed vial holding member 20 is located at the third side or base of the triangular plate in which is also mounted a vial 16 visible through opening 21 and held in place by plastic material 17.
In order to secure the device in position on the straight edge, a screw 22 or other fastening means is located in the apex of the triangular plate and an arcuate slot 23 is provided near the central portion of the base. A screw 24 is mounted in the slot 23 for fastening the plate in position, a washer 25 being provided for preventing the head of the screw from passing through the slot. By means of these two fastening means the device may not only be held in position, but it may be accurately adjusted by turning it slightly about the screw 22 as a pivot.
The device is very small and easily attached and may be secured with the left leg or edge of the isosceles triangle in parallel relation to the upper end of the straight edge as shown in Fig. 1, or with the base of the triangle parallel with the upper end of the straight edge as shown in Fig. 2, or, if desired, the right leg 15 of the device may be disposed in parallel relation to the upper end of the straight edge instead of the left leg 14. In the position of Figs. 1 and 4, or in a reverse position with the right leg of the isosceles triangle in parallel relation to the upper end of the straight edge, the device may be used to determine a level surface, a vertical surface, or a surface which 1s disposed at an angle of With the device attached to a straight edge in the manner shown in Figs. 2 and 5 it is intended merely for determining right and left surfaces disposed at angles of 45.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I, therefore, do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawing and described in the specification, but only as set forth in the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In combination with a straight edge, a plate having the form of an isosceles right triangle and adapted to be secured to the straight edge, said plate having at each edge a cylindrical receptacle adapted to receive a spirit vial, one spirit vial being mounted parallel with the longitudinal edges and one parallel to the end edges of the straight edge, the third of said vials being mounted at a 45 degree angle to the straight edge, the plate nseaeez having means for pivotally attaching it to the straight edge and securing it in adjusted position about said pivotal point, substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Port Austin, Michigan this 23 day of February, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-eight.
JOHN MAYES.
