Dec. 27, 1932. D. s. ELLIS LOCOMOTIVE CROSSHEAD AND GUIDE CONSTRUCTION 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Feb. 18, 1929 Patented Dec. 27, 1932 DANIEL S. ELLIS, OF HACKENSAGK, NEW JERSEY LOCOMOTIVE CROSSI-IIEIAID AND GUIDE CONSTRUCTION Application filed February 18, 1929.
73 providing adequate lubrication for the wearing surfaces.
An additional object of my invention is to facilitate the manufacture of the complete structure by novel elements preferably forming the main elements of one-piece castings with lubricant reservoirs formed integrally therein.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a selected embodiment of my inven- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the assembled structure, some of the adjacent parts of the locomotive being indicated also.
Figure 2 is a top view of the upper cross head guide.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same.
Figure l is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 4l of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is in part a side elevation and in in part a. vertical longitudinal section through the cross head and is made on a larger scale.
Figure 6 is a vertical transverse section through the cross head taken on the line 66 of Figure 5.
The cross head structure illustrated is associated with the usual locomotive cylinders 1 having pistons with rods 2, the cross head 8 being operatively connected to the drivers a by means of a connecting rod, not shown. The upper and lower cross head guides 5 and 6 respectively may be secured to the cylinder head, as indicated at 7, in the usual manner and secured to the locomotive frame (not shown) by suitable brackets 8 or in any other satisfactory way. The body portion of the upper guide 5 is preferably formed of a onepiece casting having integral depressions 9 formed therein at spaced points and adapted to hold a supply of lubricant. Preferably,
Serial No. 340,993.
the depressions 9 are provided with screens 10 and cover plates 11, the cover plates fitting over suitable gaskets 12 and being secured to the guide by suit-able bolts or screws 13. If desired, the lubricant reservoir 9 may be filled with suitable packing material 1 1 to prevent undue discharge of the lubricant from the reservoir. A renewable wear plate 15 is secured to the guide 5 by suitable rivets or bolts 16. Passageways 17 lead from. reservoir 9 through wear plate 15 so as to discharge lubricant from the reservoir to the lower surface of the wear plate and these passageways 1'7 are arranged at spaced points along the guide so as to efiiect a uniform distribution 6 of lubricant.
The lower cross head guide 6 is provided with a similar wear plate 18 but is not provided with any lubricant reservoir, the wear plate being lubricated from a suitable lubricant reservoir in the cross head 3.
The cross head 3 is preferably formed of a one-piece casting having a general U-shape but with an extra pocket forming wall 19 formed integrally therewith and extending along but spaced from one of the side walls of the body of the cross head and below the body of the cross head to form a lubricant reservoir. The upper portion of the cross head mounts renewable shoes 20 and the lower portion of the cross head is provided with spaced depending flanges 21 which mount a renewable shoe 22. The shoes 20 and 22 are secured to the cross head by suitable bolts 23 extending laterally through the adjacent cross head flanges or walls and the bolts for the lower shoe extending beneath the main portion of the lubricant reservoir. The lubricant reservoir, however, has an intermediate portion 24 projecting between flanges 21 and the adjacent bolts 23, as best shown in Figure 5, to a point adjacent to the horizontal portion of the shoe and a passageway 25 leads from this intermediate portion of the lubricant reservoir through the shoe to the wear plate 18 on which it is mounted.
The intermediate portion of the cross head is provided with the usual bearings 26 for the cross head pin (not shown) and the lubricant reservoir is formed arcuately about bearings 26 so as to provide additional capacity and also to facilitate renewing the supply of lubricant to the reservoir by presenting a filling opening 27 which will not be obstructed by the laterally extending bearings.
The lubricant reservoir is provided with openingson its lower face through which packing material may be inserted and removed and suitable plugs 28 are removably applied to these openings to seal the same voirs. The formation of the reservoir; in the cross head provides a reservoir of substantially larger capacity for the relatively greater dc] ands of the lower shoe and wear plate.
It willbe noted that each of the shoes and wear plates may be renewed when worn and this makes possible the maintaining of accurate fits between the cross head and guides, thereby eliminating any play between these parts. This construction also enables the body of the cross head and guides to be made of cast metal and the interengaging parts to be made of relatively hard and expensive material.
Obviously, the details of my invention may be modified substantially without departing from the spirit thereof and I contemplate the exclusive use of such variations in the construction as come within the scope of my claims.
