My invention relates to railway rollingl stock and consists in a novel underframe structure for use in railway vehicles and in the assembly of certain superstructure elements therewith. I illustrate my invention as applied to oil-electric locomotives but its use is not limited to such embodiment. It has been the practice to mount the oil engines on top of the underframe and one of the objects of my invention is to form the engine subbases as a part of the underframel and located below the top thereof thereby decreasing the total depth from the center line of the engine crank shaft to the bottom of the underframe. This lowers the center of gravity of the locomotive and reduces the total weight of a tructure employing a separately formed subase.
Another object of my invention is to form in the underrame a compartment below an engine crank shaft to receive lubricating oil and having a removable oil sump. I also desire to provide the above mentioned compartment with suitable openings and closures therefor whereby the lower connecting rod bearings may be inspected.
Another object of my invention is to provide a box shaped center or draft sill to form a more rigid structure and to combine therewith intermediate sills and side sills serving as supports for the upper portions of engines and for generators. Associated objects are to obtain a minimum weight and maximum rigidity in a given structure so as to withstand the vibrations of the engine and weaving of the underframe as a result of vertical track reactions or longitudinal buliing and pulling forces which otherwise would result in disalignment of engine crank shaft bearings and generator shaft bearings.
Another object of my invention is to form an engine crank shaft bearing integrally .with the sub-base.
Another object of my invention is to locate fuel oil reservoirs or other liquid compartments in the underrame and preferably to form these reservoirs integrally with the underframe structure. In a locomotive having a plurality of engines disposed on opposite sides of the longitudinal center line ofthe vehicle, it is desirable to locate these liquid compartments on opposite sides of the vehicle also and it is another object of my invention to connect these compartments with suitable passageways so that the liquid level therein may be maintained constant to maintain an even weight of liquid on each side of the underframe.
Another object of my invention is to provide in the underframe structure suitable space for locating the water circulating pipes so that the same may be run entirely around the underframe. I

The above and various other detailed objects of my invention are attained by the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a top view of the Vunderframe with some piping attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on the longitudinal center line of the underframe.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the same.

Preferably, the underframe is an integral structure formed by cast-,ing or weldin and such construction makes it possible to o tain many of the objects set forth above far more effectively than would be possible with a built-up structure. The main longitudinal member of the underframe is a center sill of box shaped section comprising vertical sides 1 and horizontal top and bottom walls 2 and 3, respectively, which are provided with openings to lighten the structure and to provide access to piping and other equipment which may be located Within the center sill. Intermediate sills 4 and side sills 5 parallel the center sill 1-2-3 and the bolsters 6, and end sills 7 connectthe longitudinal sill members and are formed integrally therewith. Transverse braces 27 connect the intermediate and side sills at intervals.
Each side wall 1 of the center sill forms one side of the sub-base of an oil engine and the corresponding portion o the adjacent intermediate sill 4 forms the other side of the engine sub-base. The liquid compartments have been shown on this locomotive as 1ocated beyond the bolster, but their location at other places within the cab underframe are considered as coming within the spirit of this invention. Also, connecting elements can be modified to suit the ditferent locations.
It will be understood that my invention is not limitedto the complete combination of all of the elements shown and I contemplate the exclusive use of such variations in the described structure as come within the scope of my claims.
I claim:
1. In a railway vehicle, an underframe insaid underframe, and a liquid compartment,
located between said sub-base and the end of said underframe and below said cab and formed integrally with,k said underframe.
3. In a railway vehicle underframe, elements for mounting an engine, members for supportingr a cab floor, and a liquid compartment formed in said underframe between said elements and the end of said underfram and below said members.
4. In a railway vehicle underframe integral structure, elements for mounting an engine, membersfor supporting a cab ioor, and a liquid compartment formed in said structure between said elements and the end of said unldertrame and below said elements and memers. f
5. In a railway vehicle underframe, cab ioor supporting members, and a plurality of liquid compartments formed in said underframe and below the top of said members and in balanced relation on opposite sides of the longitudinal center line of said locomotive.
6. In a railway vehicle underframe, cab floor supporting members, and a plurality of liquid compartments formed in said underrame and below the top ot' said members and in balanced relation on opposite sides of the longitudinal and transverse center lines of said locomotive.
7. In a railway vehicle underframe structure, a plurality of separated liquid compartments each comprising a complete closed tank, said compartments being 'formed in said structure and arranged in balanced relation on opposite sides of the longitudinal center line of the structure.
8. In a railway vehicle underframe, a center sill, a longitudinal sill spaced therefrom,

11. In a railway vehicle, an underframe having a center sill member, an end sill member, a bolster member, and a longitudinal sill member spaced from said center sill member, a cab floor, a compartment adapted to contain liquid and formed integrally 'with said casting and located below said floor in the space between said members on one side of said underframe, another compartment adapted to contain liquids located on the opposite side of said undert'rame, said compartments being arranged substantially symmetrical with respect to the longitudinal center line of said casting. n
12. In a railway vehicle integral underframe structure, a center sill, separated liquid bolster, a liquid compartment comprising a vtomplete closed tank located at one side of said bolster, and a conduit integral with said bolster and extending from said compartment through said bolster.
16. In a 'railway vehicle underframe, a bolster, a liquid compartment at one side of said bolster and formed integrally therewith, and a conduit integral with said bolster and compartment and extending through said bolster.
17. In a railway vehicle underframe, a bolster, a sill integral therewith, a liquid compartment at 011e side of said bolster and said sill, and a conduit integral with said bolster and sill extending from said' compartment through said bolster and sill.
18. In a railway vehicle underframe, a center sill, liquid compartments located on opposite sides of said sill, said compartments being located equi-distant from the longitudinal center line of said underframe and the tops of saidl compartments being spaced below the ltop of said sill.
19. In a railway vehicle underframe, a center sill, liquid compartments located on opposite sides of said sill, said compartments being located equi-distant from the longitudinal center line of said underframe and the tops of said compartments being spaced below the top of said sill, all of said elements being formed in a one-piece casting.
20. In a railway vehicle underframe integral structure, a center sill, bolsters, end sills, liquid compartments in the spaces between said bolsters and end sills, on each sideof said center sill, and engine sub-bases between said bolsters on each side of said center sill.
21. In a railway vehicle underframe integral structure, a center sill, bolsters, end sills, liquid compartments in the vspaces between said bolsters and en'd sills on each side of said center sill member, and engine crank cases between said bolsters and on each side of said center sill.
22. In a railway vehicle underframe, the combination of a liquid compartment and an engine sub-base spaced therefrom and integral therewith. l
23. In a railway vehicle underframe integral structure, the combination of a liquid compartment and an engine sub-base integral therewith, said compartment being located below the top of said structure.
24. In a railway'vehicle underframe integral structure, a center' sill, longitudinal sills spaced from said center sill, said sills forming engine sub-bases on opposite sides of the longitudinal center line of the underframe.
25. A railway vehicle underframe having a center sill, longitudinal sills spaced from said center sill` said sills forming engine sub-bases on opposite sides of the longitudinal center line of the underframe, elements in said sub-bases extending transversely thereof and providing crank shaft bearings, all of said parts being formed in an integral structure.
26. In a railway vehicle' underframe, an
integral structure having longitudinal sill members forming an engine sub-base extending substantially the full depth of said members and being open at the bottom, and a deviding crank shaft bearings, and a detachable member for closing the bottom opening in said structure.
28. In a locomotive underframe integral structure, spaced longitudinal sill members having vertical webs, said webs forming the side walls of an engine sub-base, there being an opening in one of said walls for access to the interior of said sub-base, and a separate cover plate for closing said opening and secured to the latter.
29. In a locomotive underframe integral structure, spaced longitudinal sill members having vertical webs, said webs forming the side walls of an engine sub-base, said walls extending vertically to the bottom of the subbase, and transverse members between said side walls having crank shaft bearings.
30. In a railway vehicle underframe integral structure, longitudinal sill members having vertical webs, portions of which webs comprise a support for a generator, said portions being inclined so as to provide clearance between them for the generator housing.
31. In a railway vehicle underframe integral structure, longitudinal sill members having webs disposed vertically for the greater portion of their length but inclined throughout opposed portions of their length so as to provide a wider space between them to clear a generator housing mounted on said members.
A32. In a railway vehicle underframe integral structure, longitudinal sill members having vertical webs, a portion of the tops of said sills being offset transversely to support a generator housing and the lower portions of lsaid webs being inclined upwardly to clear the generator housing.
33. In a railway vehicle underframe integral structure, spaced longitudinal sill members the upper portions of which form supports for an engine and a generator, the portions forming supports for the generator being spaced apart a greater distance than the portions forming a support for the engine.
34. In a railway vehicle underframe integral structure, spaced longitudinal sill members forming supports for an engine and a generator, sa1d members being offset throughout a portion of their length to accommodate the variation in the widths of the engine and generator Vsupported thereon.

In a railway vehicle underframe integral structure, three longitudinal sill members, an engine sub-base formed integral with said structure between the center member and one of the other of said members, and another engine sub-base formed integral with said structure between the center member and the third of said members.

In a railway vehicle undertrame integral structure, three longitudinal sill members, and an engine sub-base, having crank shaft bearings, formed integral with and located between the center and one of the other of said members, and another engine sub-base having crank shaft bearings and formed integral with and located between the center and the third of said members.
37. In a railway vehicle underframe integral structure, an engine sub-base extending longitudinally of the structure and between the longitudinal center line thereof and the side of the structure.
38. In a railway vehicle, an underframe, and an engine sub-base within thesides or' said structure and extending longitudinally of said under-frame and spaced from the longitudinal center line thereof and constituting a structural element of said underframe.
39. In a railway vehicle underframe integral structure, an engine sub-base within the sides of said structure and arranged longitudinally thereof and spaced from the longitudinal center line thereof and including crank shaft bearings.
40. In a railway vehicle underframe, bolsters, and a plurality of engine sub-bases integral with and located between said holsters.
41. In a railway vehicle underframe integral structure including bolsters and a plurality of engine sub-bases having crank shaft bearings, said sub-bases being integral with and located between said holsters.

In a railway vehicle underframe integral structure comprising a box section center sill member, a longitudinal sill member on each side of said center sill member, a pair of engine sub-bases arranged longitudinally of said structure, said bases being arranged symmetrically with respect to the lon `tudinal and transverse center lines of sai structure.

In a railway vehicle underframe integral structure, a center sill member and longitudinal sills on each side of said center sill member, a pair of engine sub-bases arranged longitudinally of said structure, generator supports on said member and sills in line with said sub-bases, each of said generator supports and sub-base portions being located equal distances on opposite sides of the transverse and longitudinal center lines of said structure. es

In a railway vehicle underframe integral structure, a box shaped center sill and a box shaped bolster, the side walls of said sill and said bolster intersecting the central portion of said sill and bolster and said central portion between said walls being open top and bottom so as to form an air conduit.

61. In a railway vehicle underframe, a plurality of reservoirs arranged side by side and extending longitudinally of the underframe with their ad] acent walls constituting silllike members of the underframe.
62. A railway-vehicle frame comprising a unitary casting constituting an under-bed for a prime mover, integral fuel tanks, a platform and a bumper, means on the casting for supporting a car body and means for mounting the frame on a supporting truck.
63. An under-bed for a heat engine and an electric generator that comprises an integral casting disposed to support the engine and generator in proper alignment, said casting being provided with integral fuel and water tanks.

A railway-vehicle frame comprising a unitary casting constituting an under-bed for a prime mover, tanks associated with the prime mover, means on the casting for supporting a car body, a running gear for supporting the frame and motors for propelling the vehicle, the tanks for said prime mover being formed integrally with the unitaryv casting.
