IMPROVEMENT IN THE METHODS OF PRESERVING AND FINISHING PICTURES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 1 89,1 l 7, dated April 3, 1877; application filed August 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEBBEUS T. LUTHER, of Mill Village, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new Mode of Finishing and Preserving Pictures; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in covering pictures I with silk cloth, or other textile fabric rendered transparent by the application of shellac, varnish, glue, or equivalent substances producing that result, the material employed to render the textile covering transparent being also an adhesive substance, so that the covering will be rendered transparent, and, at the same time adhere to the surface of the picture, whereby the picture is rendered water-proof, is preserved from scaling or cracking, and its shading and general appearance improved.
To enable others skilled in the artto make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
I employ silk, or any other suitable cloth or textile fabric, as the covering for thepicture,
which covering is rendered transparent by the application of varnish, shellac, glue, or similar substance producing that result, to its surface. The covering is then applied to the picture, the substance employed to render the covering transparent being also an adhesive one, thereby securing the covering to'the sur-
