Referring to the drawings in detail, the numerals 1 and 2 respectively indicate the upper and lower sections of a jointed elevator operated by means of a chain 3 from a drive shaft 4. The drive shaft 4 is suitably mounted in the frame 5 of the grader indicated generally at 6. p V
The upper section 1 may be lifted by the rotation of a shaft 7 which is j ournaled in the frame 5 and operatively connected with the section 1 by means of a pair of chains or cables 8. Each of the chains 8 is secured at one end to the frame 5, and passes around a pulley 9 secured to the section 1 by a strap 10, then passes over a pulley 11 mounted on the frame 5 and is secured at its opposite end to a drum 12 fixedly mounted on the shaft 7. Obviously upon the rotation ofthe shaft 7 the section 1 will be raised by the chains or 59 cables 8.

rotation of a shaft 13 which is journaled in the frame and operatively connected with the section 2 by means of a'pair of gears 14 and a pair of racks 15. Obviously the section 2 and racks 15 will be lifted bodily uponrotation of the shaft 13in acounter'clockwisedirection as viewed in Figures 1 and 3.
Fixedly mounted onthe drive shaft 4 is a clutch element 16. for engagement by a pair of oppositely disposed clutch members 17 and 18 respectively formed integrally with sleeves 19 and 20 rotatably mountedon the drive shaft 4'. Fixedlymounted on sleeve 20 is a sprocket 21 which drives a chain 22 extending around the same and around a sprocket 23 fixedly mounted on a shaft 24 mi journaled in the frame 5. Fixed to the sprocket 23 is a gear 25 which meshes with a gear 2610f theshaft 13 for rotating the latter. The clutch member 18 may be engaged when desired by means of a lever 27 pivotally connected intermediate its ends to the frame 5. Having one end pivotally connected to one end of the lever 27 is a- :push bar 28,the op: posite' end of which is forked for engage: ment with a grooved collar 29 formed on the SQ sleeve20. v
Fixedly mounted on the sleeve 19 is .a sprocket'30 ,which drives a chain 31"extendingaround the same and around a sprocket 32 fixedly mounted on a shaft 33-journaled in the frame 5. 1 Mounted on the shaft 33 is a gear 34; which meshes'with a gear 35 on. the shaft 7 for. rotating the latter. Theclutch memberj17 may be engaged when desired, by means of a lever 36 having one end pivotally connected tothe frame 5. Having one end pivotally connected with the lever 36 is a pull bar 37,'the opposite end of which is forked for engagement with a grooved collar 38 formed on the sleeve 19. I M
It is to be understood. that the embo'di ment of the invention herein illustrated and described is to be considered as a preferred example of the same, andvthat changes in the details of construction may be made so long as such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a lifting mechanism for a grader having an elevator driven from a drive shaft and including upper and lower sections, a clutch element fixedly mounted on the drive shaft, a pair of clutch members slidably and rotatably mounted on the drive shaft, shifting means for engaging the clutch members with the clutch element, and means operatively connecting said clutch members with said sections to provide for the lifting of the latter upon the engagement of the.
clutch members.

In a lifting mechanism for a grader hav ing an elevator driven from a drive shaft, a clutch element fixedly mounted on the drive shaft, a sleeve slidably and rotatably mounted on the drive shaft and having'a clutch member for engagement with said clutch element, shifting means'for engaging the clutch memher with the clutch element for rotating said sleeve, a sprocket rotatable with said sleeve, a rack secured to said elevator and projecting upwardly therefrom, a rotatable gear meshing with said rack, and means operatively connecting said gear with said sprocket for rotating the gear to lift the elevator upon rotation of the sleeve.
3. In a lifting mechanism for a grader comprising in combination, an upstanding frame, an elevator extended from the latter, a drive shaft journaled in the bottom of the frame and operatively connected to the elevator for operating the latter, a clutch element fixedly mounted on the drive shaft, a sleeve slidably and rotatably mounted on the'drive shaft and having a clutch member for engagement with said clutch element, shifting means for engaging the clutch member with the hereto.
