This invention relates to overalls and pertains more particularly to improvements in the construction and arrangement of the side pocket of overalls, dungarees or like garments. The principal purpose of the invention is to provide a garment of this character in which a commodious and readily accessible side pocket is so attached to the inner of a front Section of the garment that its slit or opening is located inside an opening at the side of the garment and hence iS covered and concealed by the front section when the garment is in use.

In overalls heretofore manufactured, the so-called side pockets have had exterior openings formed as transverse or diagonal slits in the front of the garment. Pockets of this type tend to flare or gape open as the wearer bends or moves about and the edge of the pocket iS thus liable to be caught by tools, parts of machines or other projecting objects whether fixed or movable. The consequent risk of personal injury, damage to the garment or machinery and inconvenience to the wearer of the common type of overall is obviated-by the present invention without otherwise impairing the utility of the garment..

A recommended embodiment of this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a pair of overalls equipped withthe improved Side pockets;

Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary rear view of one side of the garment, the back section being folded down to illustrate the preferred arrangement of the pocket; and

In making a garment according to this invention, the fabric pieces used in forming the top, body and leg portions maybe cut from denim or like material and assembled in any common manner to produce a pair of overy9 having a facingA alls of the general character. shown in Fig. l. For example, thefront4, legs 5 and back 7 maybe formed of two main fabric pieces stitched together along the median line 6 of the body portion of the garment; and the upper edges 'of the front and back Sections may be connected by Suitable shoulderv straps 8 of'ordinary construction. v c The front and back sections 4kand 7 respectively are separated atopposite sides of thegarment to provide opposedflaps 9 and 10m which define openings located approximately at the thigh part of the body portion between the respective sections, the front flap strip 11 and the rear flap 10 being inturned' and hemmed as at 12. The twoflaps are preferablyconnected by a bot.- tom seam at 13 and are separably held together at the upper end `of the'opening by fastening a button 14 of the rear flap in a buttonhole 15 of the front facingll, so that the mouth of the side opening of the garment is'normally constricted. Each of the sidepockets 16 is attached .atv its upper edge to the inside of the frontsection 4 of the'garment, asby stitching 17, with the divided outer edgeof the bag-like-pocket located inside` the garment .opening and prefi erably spaced inwardly from theedge of the facing 11 and defining the vertical slit or mouth 18 leading directly into the pocket. The outer or side edge of the front partof the pocket fabric is'preferably stitched between the `garment section 4 and one of the hemmed edges of the facing strip 11 as shown at 19 of Fig. 3; and the opposite margin of the 4 18 is preferably provided with the socket part 21 of a snap fastener or the like, which cooperates with a stud part 22 attached to the hemmed edge 12 of the rear iiap 10, whereby the rearward portion of the'pocket may be separably connected to the back section 7 of the garment. Hence, although the slit 18 leading directly into the pocket is spaced inwardly from the side margin of the garment front and is normally covered by one or both the overlapping flaps 9 and 10, the pocket is readily accessible and the hand of thewearer isV guided into rather than behindV the pocket when it is inserted behind the faced margin 11`o`f the frontsection 4. It is thus apparent that the pocket mouth is spaced inwardly from the mouth of the garto the lower end of the pocket slit, the inturned margin of said back flap having a fastening element thereon, and the rearward part` of the pocket having a complemental fastening element located adjacent its slitted ment opening and is covered and concealed by the front section of the overall; so that it cannot protrude or flare open tofc'atch uponV machine parts or other equipment which may be handled by the workman.

Itvwill be understood that the improved i pocket arrangement hereinv described in connection with a common form of overall, may be utilized in outer garments generally and that the structural details herein illustrated may be varied to suit particular purposes without departing from the -essence of this invention as defined in the following claims.

I claim:

1. In a garment having body and leg portions and front and back flaps located approximately at the thigh part'of the body portion between front and back sections of the garment, said flaps being separably con! nected at their 'upper ends and forming a normally constricted side opening of the garment, and a bag-like pocket attached to the inside ofthe front section andhaving a slit along its outer* edge, the top of the pocket being spacedbelow the upper ends of the flaps and said slit being located remote from the outer edge of the front flap so that the mouth of the pocket is spaced inwardly from the mouth of the garment opening and is normally covered by the overlapping margins of the back and front flaps.

2. In a garment having body and leg portions and front and back flaps located approximately at the thigh part of the body portion between front and back sections of the garment, said flaps being separably connected at their upper ends and forming a side opening of the garment, and a bag-like pocket attached to the inside of the front section and having a slitl along its outer edge, the top of the pocket being spaced below the upper ends of theflaps and said slit being located remote from the outer edge of the front flap so that the mouth of the pocket is spaced inwardly fromthe mouth of the garment opening and is normally covered by the overlapping margins of the back and front flaps, the back iiap being inturned and joined at its lower end to the front flap and HARRY B.
