This invention relates to improvements in manifolding devices and with reference to some of the more particular features thereof 'it relates to improvements in manifolding salesbooks or similar manifolding books, wherein a plurality of copies may be made at one inscription.

It is a general object of the invention to rovide a manifolding device of the salesook type for the recording of various commercial or other transactions and having an improved arrangement for conserving the consumption of paper and permitting the recording of a relatively large number of transactions on a small area of paper and at the same time enabling the records to be quickly,

easily and accurately made by persons oflittle experience.

A further object is to provide a manifolding device having improved features 'whereby a plurality of separate transactions may be made on each record leaf which may thereupon be immediately filed by the merchant and kept as a record, and at the same time each separate transaction can be simultaneously made on one or more individual slips or record leaves which are readily detachable for distribution as desired.

Still another object of the invention is to provide an improved association of a plurality of record books or pads whereby the pads may be relatively adjusted so as to bring therespective pad leaves into different overlapping manifolding positions.

Another object is to provide an improved arrangement of a plurality of manifolding record pads whereby the pad leaves of one pad may be moved while attached to the pad into storage or filing position after being inscribed while the leaves of another pad may be readily detached after inscription and handed to the customer for his information, or otherwise disposed of.

Another object is the provision of an im-' tively large record leaves, thus bringing the leaves of the smaller pad into different manifolding positions with relation to the leaves of the larger pad.

A further object is to provide an improved viding for movement of the-first'pad fromv overlapping relation with the second pad, so as to facilitate the disposal of the record leaves of the latter. V I

Other objects of the invention will, in part, be pointed out in the following detail description of certain illustrative but preferred embodiments of the invention and will be in part obvious as the disclosure proceeds.

The invention accordingly comprises the features of construction combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.

For a more complete disclosure of the nature and objects of the invention, reference is had to the following detail disclosure and to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one form of manifolding book including the features of the invention, one cover being turned back wardly.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one form of an auxiliary record pad, the leaves whereof provide sales or like slips, and discloses also a form of support for this pad.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing a slightly modified embodiment of the record pad of Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 shows a further modified form of the auxiliary record pad and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the complete record book shown in Fig. 1, the parts being separated intoa difi'erent position in order to disclose more clearly the structure and op eration.

For a detailed description of the invention, reference is bad to the accompanyin drawing, and first to the embodiment disclosed in Figs. 1', 2 and 5. As here shown, two pads of record leaves are associated together in a .dicated at- 15 bearing any appropriate or conventional identifying data.

These larger record leaves are preferably elongated as shown and the blank forms 14; may extend substantially throughout the length thereof so as to provide a relatively large recording area. Inasmuch as each of the leaves 11 is adapted and intended for the reception of a plurality of inscriptions of separate and independent transactions. they are herein referred to as tally record leaves or tally leaves, and the pad 10 is referred to as the tally pad.

A supporting back or cover is provided for the record pads including a back cover 16 and a front cover 17 preferably hinged together by a flexible connection 18 whereby said covers may be closed together to protect the record pads, or opened up as shown in Fig. 1 to expose the pads for the reception of inscriptions.

Supported at the outer or free end of the back cover 16 is a supporting board or false back 19. extending along the'inner face of the back cover and terminating somewhere in the vicinity of the flexible connection 18. A flexible or pivotal connection 20 connects the false back at its outer end to the adjacent cover 16. thus permitting the false back to swing upon the connection 20 as a pivot toward and away from the back cover. This provides a filing or storage space between the back cover 16 and the false back 19 for the storage of inscribed tally leaves as will be later referred to. The flexible connection 20 may be of suflicient length to provide the des red storage space.

Each tally pad 10 is preferably provided on its back with a supporting stub leaf 21 attached to the binding stub 12 and having its free end received in a pocket 22 formed on the inner surface of the false back 19 near the inner free end thereof, with the mouth of the pocket opening toward the flexible connection 18. The stub leaf 21 is preferably of manila or other paper sufficiently heavy to provide ample support for holding the tally pad in position in the binder when it is received in the pocket 22.

At the inner or free end of the false back 19 a support or supporting frame 23 is connected. This supporting frame is preferably made of wire as shown, the inner end being pivotally connected to the free end of the false back-as indicated at 24. Side frame members extend along substantially parallel to the edges of the false back and are connected at their outer extremities by a transverse wire or frame piece-25. It will be observed that this method of support enables the supporting frame 23 to swing upon its pivotal connections 24 as clearly seen in Fig. 5. The upper faces of the tally leaves 11 are presented through this supporting frame.

The supporting frame 23 serves as a guide and support for a supporting carriage or slide 26 which is designed to carry an additional record pad 27. As shown, this carriage includes a pad supporting base plate 28, having pad engaging lateral flanges 29 and provided near its outer end with a plate 30 bent downwardly around the wire of the supporting frame 23 as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This plate 30 therefore provides a hinge connection with the supporting frame enabling the pad supporting carriage to be swung upwardly around the frame wire as a pivot. Since the hinge plate 30 is elongated. as shown, or has spaced engaging parts, it functions to hold the supporting carriage 26 in correctly aligned position transversely of the tally pad 10.

. At the outer extremity of its supported end, the supporting carriage 26 has an upturned supporting plate 31 looped or reversely folded to receive a swinging pad supporting link 32. This supporting link is preferably constructed of wire as shown, bent into the form of a rectangular frame having its outer side engaging the supporting plate 31 and its inner side adapted to engage with the record pad 27 for retaining the latter in position upon base plate 28.

It will thus be seen that the supporting carriage together with the record pad 27 carried thereby is slidable or movable bodily along the supporting frame 23 and longitudinallv of the tally leaves.

The carriage 26 in conjunctionwith the supporting rails therefor thus provides a mounting slide for the auxiliary pad 27. It will also be noticed that the auxiliary pad 27 is mounted for bodily or sliding movement to bring the record leaves thereof into different manifolding positions with reference to the record leaves of the main pad 10. Also.

the auxiliary pad is mountedfor pivotal or angular movement by virtue of its connection with the supporting rail 23, and for angular or pivotal movement in a different plane by virtue of its connection with the support or false back 19 which is pivotally connected at 20 to the cover 16. In other words, the auxiliary pad 27 has pivotal connection to the supporting back for movement in two different planes in addition to being bodily movable along the supporting back.

r The record pad 27 also preferably has a plurality of superposed record leaves 33 bound together in a stub and having record areas quite small as compared with the record areas tain data and connected to the main leaf 33,

along'a weakened or perforated line 35. The leaves 33 are also preferably connected to the binding stub through weakened lines 36 to facilitate detachment.

A transfer sheet 37 is also bound into the pad 27 overlying the record leaves 33 and having carbon material on its under face 0on1 tacting with the upper face of the next adjacent record leaf so as to transfer inscriptions to the latter.

The pad 27 is provided on its under side with an attaching stub leaf 38 similar to the stub leaf 21 and adapted to pass over the inner side of the supporting link 32 so as to support the pad in position. lVhen it is desired to insert or remove a pad, the supporting link 32 .may be swung upwardly at its inner side on its outer side as a pivot thus facilitating engagement of the attaching leaf 38 therewith. l-Vhen the link is swung downwardly again as shown in Fig. 2 the pad is effectively retained in operative position upon the supporting carriage. r

- It will now be seen that the tally pad 10 and the current pad 27 may be mounted on their respective supports as'described and assembled substantially as shown in Fig. '1. When thus assembled, the carriage 26 together with the pad 27 carried thereby may be bodily moved or slid along supporting frame 23 to bring the pad 27 into any desired manifolding relation with reference to the pad 10. The top leaf of the pad 10 is adjusted to overlie the upper face of the pad 27, the latter being adjusted to bring it into registry-with the top lines of the blank form 14 of the overlying leaf. Inscription may now be made on one or more of these top lines; usually one or two lines only will be required for the recording of a complete transaction. Such inscription is transferred to the top leaf 33 of the pad 27 by virtue of the carbon leaf 37. When the complete transaction has been recorded as described, the inscribed current leaf 33 together with the check 34 may be detached from the pad and disposed of in any desired manner; it may, for example, be handed to a cash sales customer who will present it to'the cashier for payment as designated thereon.

- Pad 27 may then be adjusted to the next succeeding lower line of the blank form 14 and another inscription made in the same manbeneath the false back 19. The supporting plate 28 together with the pad 27 may then be swung upwardly upon the frame 23 as a pivot from its position overlying the padlO whereupon the next succeeding leaf ll of pad 10 maybe lifted and placed in writing position upon the pad 27. The operation in connection with this second leaf 11 may then be proceeded with as in the manner already described.

A slight modification of the current pad is shown inFig. 3. This pad 27 is similar generally to the pad 27 but the record leaves thereof are made up in sets or groups of two leaveseach including a duplicate leaf 39 and a triplicate"40. The triplicate 40 is bound at its inner end in the stub of the pad while the duplicate .39 is attached to and carried by the outer end of the triplicate leaf. These two leaves may be made of a single integral piece of paper folded as indicated at 41 where a weakened severance line or perforated line is preferably provided to facilitate separa-.

as indicated at 44 to provide access to'the inner free end of the duplicate leaf 39 whereby the latter may be conveniently grasped when it is desired to remove the same. This pad may beutili-zed as above described, thus providing two additional copies of the inscription made upon the tallyleaves 11.

Another modification of the current pad is suggested in Fig. 4. Thedifierence of pad 27 over the form of Fig. 3 resides principally in the provision of'groups of three leaves instead oftwo. As shown, the duplicate leaf 39* is attached as in Fig. 3 to the triplicate leaf 40 but an additional or quadruplicate leaf 45 is also provided, being attached at its outer end tothe under side of the duplicate leaf 39", as by means of a line or spots of adhesive 46. This adhesive may be light enough to permit ready separation of the leaves 39 and 45, or the latter may be pro vided with a weakened or perforated line to facilitate separation The carbon sheet 47 lying betweenlthe record leaves 40 and 45 is coated with transfer material on both upper and lower faces so as to transfer inscriptions to the upper face of leaf 40 and to the under face of leaf 45, the latter ordinarily being translucent v, hereby the inscription may be read from the front face. The transfer leaf 5 43* may be similar to the transfer leaf 43 above described.

In the form of record pad disclosed in connection with F at, it will be observed that the leaf 39* together with carbon 43 may be omitted, the translucent record leaf 45 being then pasted or otherwise connected to the outer end of the leaf 40 Two copies will then be formed on the current pad 27 by use of the double face carbon 47.

Since certain changes may be made in the above construction and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a manifolding device, in combination, a plurality of pads of record leaves, supporting means for supportlng said pads with the record leaves thereof in overlapping manifolding relation, said supporting means including a supporting device providing for movement of one of said pads to different manifolding positions with reference to another pad, covers for enclosing said pads and a false back attached to one of said covers and cooperating with one cover to form a storage or filing space for the reception of the inscribed leaves of one pad.

2. In a manifolding device, in combination, a plurality of pads of record leaves, the leaves of one pad having record areas considerably larger than the record areas of the leaves of a second pad, supporting means for supporting said pads with the leaves thereof in overlapping manifolding relation, said supporting means including a supporting device providing for movement of said second pad with reference to the pad having the leaves of large recording area, covers for enclosing said pads and a false back attached to one of said covers and cooperating with the cover to form a storage or filing space for reception of the inscribed leaves with the larger recordareas.

In a manifolding device, in combination, a plurality of pads of record leaves, the leaves of one pad having record areas considerably larger than the record areas of the leaves of a second pad, supporting means for supporting said pads with the leaves thereof in overlapping manifolding relation, said supporting means including a supporting device providing for movement of said r second pad with reference to the pad having the leaves of largerecording area, covers for enclosing said pads and a false back attached to one of said covers and cooperating with the cover to form a storage or filing space for reception of the inscribed leaves with the larger record areas and a transfer leaf carried by the movable pad and positioned to transfer to the record leaves thereof inscriptions made on the leaves of the other pad.

4. In a manifolding device, in combination, a plurality of pads of record leaves, a first one of said pads having tally leaves with blank spaces for the reception of a plurality of separate records, a second pad having current leaves smaller than the others and having blank spaces for the reception of individual current records, supporting means for supporting said pads with record leaves thereof in overlapping manifolding relation, said supporting means including a supporting device providing for movement of said second pad to bring the leaves thereof successively into manifolding relation with different separate blank spaces of the leaves of the other pad. and a storage compartment adjacent said first pad into which the inscribed leaves thereof may be inserted.

5. In a manifolding device, in combination, a plurality of pads of record leaves and supporting means for supporting said pads with the record leaves thereof in overlapping manifolding relation, said supporting means including a pivotal supporting device supporting one of said pads for pivotal movement, said supporting means including also a pivotal supporting device supporting said last mentioned pad for angular movement in a difierent plane from said first mentioned movement.

6. In a manifolding book, in combination, a plurality of pads of record leaves, a supporting cover for said pads, supporting means supporting said pads on said cover with the record leaves thereof in overlapping manifolding relation, said supporting means including a supporting device supporting a first one of said pads for movement into different manifolding positions with reference to the leaves of a second pad, andone pad being mounted for movement entirely to one edge of the other pad to permit the leaves of the latter to be swung past the former pad.

7, r7.iIn a manifolding book, in combination a pluralityof'pads of record leaves, a supporting cover for said pads, supporting means supporting said pads on said cover with the record leaves thereof in overlapping manifolding relation, said supporting means including a supporting rail extending along the edgeof one pad and the other pad being slidably and pivotally mounted upon said rail, a false back attached to said cover and cooperating therewith to form a filing space for the leaves of one pad, and said supporting rail having: supporting attachment with said false bac 8. In a manifolding book, in combination, a plurality of pads of record leaves, supporting means for supporting said pads with the leaves thereof in overlapping manifoldinlg relation, one of said pads overlying anot er and being elongated and relatively narrow as compared with the length of the other pad and having its major dimension extending transversely of said other pad, said elongated pad having record leaves with portions of their,record areas extending beyond the edges of the leaves of the other pad for receiving independent inscriptions, said supporting means including a supporting device providing for movement of said elongated pad transversely of its length into different manifolding positions with reference to the leaves of the other pad, and said elongated pad having a pivotal mountin providing for movement of the pad away from overlying position with the other pad.

9. In a manifolding device, in combination, a plurality of pads of record leaves, the first of said pads having a binding in which its leaves are bound at their ends for swinging movement, and supporting means for supporting said pads with the record leaves thereof in overlapping manifolding relation, said supporting means including a pivotal supporting device positioned at an angle to said binding and supporting the second pad for swinging movement at an angle to the movement of the leaves ofv the first pad, said supporting means also including a bodily movable supporting connection positioned for movement of said second pad longitudinally of the first pad into different manifolding positions.

10. In a manifolding book, in combination, a plurality of pads of record leaves including an auxiliary pad and a main pad with its leaves bound at one pad edge to provide for swinging movement of said leaves, a'support supporting said pads with the record eaves thereof in overlapping manifolding relation and a support supporting said auxiliary pad for ivotal movement and for bodily movement into difi'erent manifolding positionswith reference to the leaves of the main pad, said last mentioned support having its pivotal axis extending along an edge of the main pad and positioned outside of the bounds of the latter.

11 In a manifoldin book, in combination, a plurality of pa 5 of record leaves, a supporting cover for said pads, supporting means supporting said pads on said cover with the record leaves thereof in overlapping manifolding relation, said supporting means including a su porting device supporting a first one of-sai pads for movement into, different manifolding positions with referenceto the leaves of a second pad, and a swingable mounting connected to said cover and to said supporting device and positioned beyond the free ends of the record leaves of said second pad. In a manifolding book, in combination, a plurality of pads of record leaves including an auxiliary pad and a main pad with its leaves bound at one pad edge to provide for swinging movement of said leaves, a supportsupporting said pads with the record leaves thezeof in overlapping maninfolding relation, a pivotal support for said auxiliary pad having its pivotal axis extending along and adjacent to an edge of. the main pad other than the bound edge of the latter, and means for mounting said auxiliary pad upon said pivotal support for movement into different manifolding positions with reference to the overlapping leaf of the main pad.

13. In a manifolding book, in combination, a plurality of pads of record leaves including an auxiliar pad and a main pad with its leaves boun at one pad edge to provide for swinging movement of said leaves, a support supporting said pads with the record leaves thereof in overlapping manifold-' ing relation, a pivotal support for said auxiliary pad having its pivotal axis extending along an edge of the main pad and positioned outside of the bounds of the latter,'and a mounting slide for said auxiliary pad extending longitudinally of the main pad for movement of the auxiliary pad into different manifolding positions along said main pad.

14. In a manifolding book, in combination, a plurality of pads of record leaves bound at one end and including main and auxiliary pads, a support supporting said pads with the record leaves thereof in overlapping manifolding relation, a pivotal support for said auxiliary pad having its ivotal axis extending along and outside 0 an edge of the main pad, and a mounting slide for said auxiliary pad extending'longitudinally of the main pad for movement of the auxiliary pad into different manifolding positions along said main pad, said slide including a bar pivoted to said pivotal support remote from the pivotal axis of the latter and said auxiliary pad being pivotally connected for swinging movement to said pivoted bar.

15. In a manifolding book, in combination, a plurality of pads of bound record leaves including a main pad and an auxiliar pad normally positioned over the main pa a mounting connection for said auxiliary pad 16. In a manifolding device; in combination, a support for a record pad, supporting rails extending along and beyond opposite edges of said record pad. and a pad sup porting carriage supported by said rails and supporting a second pad in superposition with the rst pad and being connected to said support for movement from superposition with the first pad so as to permit free shifting of the record leaves of the latter.

In a manifolding device, in combination, a support for a record pad, a pad supporting carriage for a second pad superposed upon t e first,and a carriage supporting rail positioned outside of the bounds of said first record pad and extending along a free edge c of the latter and supporting said carriage for bodily sliding and pivotal movements.

In a manifolding device, in combination, a support for a record pad,,a"pad supporting carriage for a second pad superposed upon the first, a carriage supporting rail positioned outside of the bounds of said first record pad and extending along a. free edge of the latter and supporting said carriage for bodily sliding and pivotal movements,

and a support for said rail pivoted to said pad support.

19. In a manifolding device, in combination, a. support for a record pad, a pad supporting carriage tor a second pad superposed upon the first, a carriage supporting rail positioned outside of the bounds of said first record pad and extending along a free edge of the latter and supporting said carriage for bodily sliding and pivotal movements, and a support for said rail pivoted to'said pad support, and to which said rail is pivotally connected for swinging movement.
