WASHER LOG Filed Jan. 18, 1932 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 p/fi Wzffje Allorney Inuenlor Patented Nov. 8, 1932 UNITED STATES- PATENT; OFFICE WILLIAM A. FYI], OF STATE COLLEGE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 MCLANAHAN 8c STONE CORPORATION, OF HOLLIDAYSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA WASHER LOG Application filed January 18, 1932. Serial No. 587,394.
The present inventionrelates to new and useful improvements in logs for Washing machines of the type used for washing stones, ores, sand, etc. and has for some of its objects to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character which will be simple in construction, exceedingly strong and durable, eflicient and reliable in operation and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a log constructed in accordance with the pres ent invention.
Figure 2 is a view in end elevationrof the log.
Figure 3 is a view in vertical transverse section taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a view principally in longitudinal section through the log.
iFigures 5, 6 and 7 are vertical transverse sectional views through slightly modified forms of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the log is of polygonal transverse cross section and comprises a plurality of angle irons 1, having their longitudinal edges abutting each other and butt welded, as at 2. Thus, a hollow log is provided of great strength and durability.
In the end portions of the hollow body which is thus provided arethe castings 3, also hollow, which are fixed in position in any suitable manner. Projecting longitudinally from the outer ends of the castings3 are the trunnions 4 for rotatably supporting the log.
The oppositely disposed side walls of the log are provided with aligned openings 5 and the castings 3 are also provided with openings 6 which register with the adjacent openings 5. The aligned openings 5 and 6 are for the passage ofthe bolts 7 which secure the paddle bases 8 to the sides of the log. The reference numeral 9 designates paddles which are mounted'in the bases 8. As will be apparent, the bolts 7 and the paddle bases 8 further strengthen the log and the assembly of the angle irons.
' The forrnof the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 4:, inclusive, of the drawings is constructed of quarter section angle irons while the form of the invention illustrated in Fi ure 5 of the drawings is construcred of hal' section angle irons. The modification illustrated in Figure 6 of the drawings is constructed of opposed, complemental channel irons. It will be noted that all of the forms of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 6', inclusive, are substantially square in cross 'sectioni However, the logs may be of any desired polygonal cross sectional shape, For example, as seen in Figure 7, the log is hexagonal in cross section and is formed from third sections having their longitudinal edges butt welded.
In Figure 5 of the drawings, the half section angle irons are designated by the reference numeral 10, the same being welded as at 11, thus providing the, joints at two of the diagonally opposite corners of the completed log. In the form of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, of the drawings, it will be noted that the joints are at the longitudinal centers of the sides of the log. In Figure 6 of the drawings, the duplicate channel'irons are designated by the reference numeral 12 and are welded, as at 13. It will thus be seen that in this form of the invention the joints are at the longitudinal centers of two opposite sides of the log. In Figure 7 of the drawings, the third section angle irons are designated by the reference numeral 14: and are welded, as at 15, thus providing a joint at every second angle or corner of the 7 log.
It is believed that the many advantages of a washer log constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiments of the invention are as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is 1. A washer log having aligned openings extending therethrough, paddle bases mounted on opposite sides of said log and having openings aligned with the openings in said log, paddles mounted in the bases, and bolts extending through the aligned openings in the log and bases for securing pairs of the bases to said log.
2. A washer log comprising a hollow, elongated body having aligned openings in opposite sides thereof, paddles mounted on said opposite sides of the body and having openings aligned with said first-named openings, and bolts passing through said first and second named aligned openings for securing pairs of the paddles in position.
3. A washer log of polygonal transverse section having aligned openings in its opposed walls, paddles mounted on said opposed walls and having openings aligned with said first named openings, and bolts extending through said first and second named openings for securing pairs of the paddles in position.
4. A washer log comprising an elongated hollow body of polygonal transverse section having aligned openings in its opposed walls, castings mounted in the end portions of the body, trunnions projecting from the castings, said castings having openings therein aligned with the first named openings, paddles mounted on the opposed walls of the body and having openings aligned with said first and second named openings, and bolts extending through the aligned openings in the body, castings and paddles for securing the pad dles in position on the body and for securing the castings in position in said body.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
