l r gar fiz f azer Czi Patented Nov. 1, 1932 UNFTEZ STATES PATENT Price ARTHUR RITSCHER, OF DRESDEN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR T UNITED CIGARETTE MACHINE COMPANY A.-G.,. OF DRESDEN-A., GERMANY CIGARETTE PACKING MACHINE Application filed January 5, 1931, Serial No.
This invention relates to cigarette packing machines and comprises an apparatus for rejecting incorrectly filled cigarettes or the like. 7
It is already known, in cigarette packing machines, to provide an electro-magnetic de- 7 vice for rejecting incorrectly filled packets,
the said device chiefly comprising feeler levers which co-operate with the cigarettes placed in the packet and which, on one or more cigarettes being deficient set in operation an ejecting apparatus which moves the completely filled packet away from the operations on the correctly filled packets. It has al-' ready been previously proposed to adjust the mechanism so finely that it operates also when cigarettes which are too loosely filled are present in the packet and rejects the packet in question. These known devices, however, have the disadvantage that when cigarettes which are too loosely filled are present, not only are the latter rejected, but the correctly filled cigarettes present in the same packet are rejected also.
According to the present invention, in or der to obviate this disadvantage, the rejection of the incorrectly filled cigarettes is effected so as to move the cigarettes in question away from the operations on the correctly filled cigarettes during their forward movement to the packing machine. In order to cause the ejecting apparatus to operate when cigarettes containing too little or too much tobacco pass by the feeler levers acting upon the ejecting apparatus, the arrangement is preferably so contrived that the feelers, which are mounted rotatably and are provided with contacts which come into contact with stationary contacts during movement in one or both directions, thereby closing in known manner the circult of an electrical a by the grooved drum glare fined with relay which controls the ejecting apparatus.
In order to include the entire length of the cigarettes, a plurality of feeler levers acting independently of one another are mounted side by side lengthwise of the cigarettes.
A constructional form of the invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which,
506,812, and in Germany January 23, 1930.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a feed apparatus for cigarettes and Figure 2 is a corresponding view in another working position of the apparatus.
A Figure 3 is a vertical section through Fig ure 1.
I The cigarettes a which are to be sent to the packing machine are fed in a known man-T ner from a supply container 7) to a revolving drum 6 provided with peripheral grooves (Z, and are arranged in the grooves of the drum by a revolving roller f. According to the invention, a plurality of feeler levers g are pivotally mounted on a common shaft h on the upper side of the grooved drum e Leaf springs z' bear against the free ends of the feeler levers g, the lower part of which is arcuate,so that the feeler levers bear with a certain pressure against the periphery of the cigarettes a which are moved past beneath them by the grooved drum 6. On the part of the feeler levers g which lies above the axle h are mounted two contacts a, 0 adjustable by'screws k and m, respectively, and opposed on both sides by a stationary contact p, g respectively. The stationary con tacts p, q are likewise adjustable by screws 7 ,5 and are connected together and to one end of the magnet winding of an electromagnet t by an electric lead 8. The lead 8 is connected to a source of electric current u. The other end of the magnet winding t is connected by a lead 41 to the feeler levers g and to the contact pin a, 0 allocated to the said feeler levers. The electromagnet t co-operates with an armature lever w, which controls in any known manner a mechanical ejecting apparatus not shown in the drawing. j
The mode of operation of the apparatus is consequently as follows:
If the cigarettes'fed from the supply conthe correct amount of tobacco, the feeler levers g exploring the cigarettes areheld in a position in which the contact pins n and 0 are out of contact with the contacts 3? and q,
so that the circuit of the electromagnet t is interrupted. If, however, a cigarette which is filled for example with too little tobacco to the smaller resistance, one or more feeler levers 9 will be moved into the position shown in Figure 2, in which the contacts p and n touch one another, thus closing the 6 circuit of the electromagnet t. The result of this is that. the armature lever w is attracted by the 'electromagnet t and the ejecting apparatus is set into operation, so that on furtbeeforward movement, the cigarette in quesl tTon isrejected from the course of the correctly filled cigarettes. Conversely, for the case in which the cigarette conttv w with the feeler levers 9 contains too much to acco, a movement of one or more fieeien levels '9- i lace in the other direction so that the oiitai. 0 and q touch one another and the circuit of the electromagnet t is again closed. e invention is of course not limited to the constructional form illustrated and may 8! beused with feed devices of any construction. The feeler levers or the like, which. explore the may if desired co-operafte with djn ie'ti anical relay instead of with an elecreiay, may serve directly for conll the 'ifiecting apparatus. In order t e ejectm apparatus will come into on when 516 badly filled cigarette contoo much or too little tobacco on a poran of its lelsn h only, a la'ige nfumlgir 'gf one o levers wil pre era y' e ffbuted ovgi' ihe entire length of the c; f erce, al'lfho h in certain cases, tgetgirovifi "of-only one eeler levermaybe cient.
