Description
Patented Nov. 1, 1932 PATENT OFFICE LE ROY O. WERNER, OF WHEELING, WEST .VIRGINIA ADVERTISING SYSTEM Application filed April 24, 1931.
This invention relates to improvements in advertising systems being however directed more particularly to an advertising system in conjunction with a signaling system.
In the following description and accompanying drawing of the signaling system with which the advertising system is associated, is an elevator signaling system but it should be understood that the advertising system can be associated with the signaling systems of other and dilferent natures without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an improved advertising systern.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an improved advertising system being a combination of an advertising medium in conjunction with a signaling system. A still further object of the invention is the provision of an improved electrically illuminated advertising medium in conjunction with and operated by an electric signalin g system.
Other further objects, novel features of construction and improved results of the invention will appear from the following description taken in conjunction with the ac- 0 companying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the ad vertising medium.
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectlonal View through the showing of Figure 1.
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic showing of the electrical lay-out of an electric signaling and control system.
Figure 4: is a detailed fragmentary view illustrating the operation of the switch by the elevator door.
Reference now being had to the drawing in which similar parts are designated by like reference numerals throughout the description, and referring particularly to Figure 3 of the drawing, A and 15 represent the low voltage lines running the length of an elevator system in a building for the delivery of current to the signaling system of the elevator, which signaling system can be any of Serial No. 532,641.
the well known systems now in common use.
The showing in Figure 3 represents only one floor in a building but it will be understood that the same apparatus would be duplicated for each floor and as is usual there are provided two push buttons 1 and 2 to be pressed by a person desiring the use of the elevator. The push button 1 is for up service and the push button 2 is for down service. From each push button a single lead goes to the signal box on the elevator and in respect to the up button this line is designated as 3 and in respect to the down but ton this line is designated as 4.
In respect to each of the push buttons they have one terminal directly connected with the current line B through the lead wire 5 in respect to the up button and the lead wire 6 in respect to the down button.
The down button has its other terminal connected to the other main line A through the wire connection 7 through the relay X and lead line 8.
The up button has its second terminal con nected to the main line A through the lead wire 9 which passes through the relay Y and is connected to the line 8 at the point 10.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by pushing either the up or down button the electric circuit is closed and in the signal box of the elevator the desired floor signal is registered on the elevator signal or ennunciator box for the guidance of the elevator operator.
In adapting my improved advertising system to the elevator signaling system 1 provide two electric lines C and D which run the length of the elevator system and carry the normal street voltage, which in most instances is 110 volts.
The lead line 11 taken off of the main street line current wire D has connection through a wire 12 with the contact 13 of the magnetic switch Z and connection with the terminal 14 adjacent the relay Y through a wire 15 and connection with the terminal 16 adjacent the relay X through a wire 17.
A lead line 18 taken off of the main street voltage line C terminates in a terminal 19 of a switch or make and break contact the other terminal of which is designated by 20. .This make and break contact is of a spring type so that it is normally closed as indicated in Figure 3 of the drawing. This switch is positioned so that the spring arm contact 20 is in the path of travel of the door which gives entrance to the elevator shaft.
Leading from the switch or contact maker and breaker 20 a lead line 21 has connection with a terminal 22 of the magnetic switch Z and this wire 21 passes through a magnetic coil 23 of the magnetic switch and has connection with the terminal 24 of the magnetic switch through a take-0H lead 25. The wire 21 connects with the wire or line 26 which has one end connected to the contact maker and breaker arm 27 of the relay Y and its opposite end connected to the contact maker and breaker arm 28 of the relay X.
The fourth terminal 29 of the magnetic switch Z is connected by a wire 30 to the electric light 31 which illuminates the advertising medium and this electric light 31 is constantly connected to the main street circuit current carrying wire D through the line or wire 32.
The advertising medium may be of any illuminated type and may be positioned in any desirable place, but for the purposes of illustrating one form of the advertising medium I have in the drawing shown a box or container 33 which is of a more or less rectangular shape having tapered or beveled ends 34 and 35 and a hinged front 36 which may be locked in its closed position as a lock 37 is provided.
Within this container or boX is positioned I the electric light 31 and in the box front 36 is positioned a transparent mirror 38. By transparent mirror I mean a glass which is a mirror until the light 31 is illuminated at which time the mirror becomes transparent. Behind this mirror is positioned the advertising matter 39 which is held securely in place and protected by glass 40.
By reason of the construction just described it will be readily apparent that the advertising matter can be changed at will from time to time as may be desired and it will also be readily understood that the advertising matter can be of any type or form described and that the specific shape of the box or medium carrying the advertising forms no part of the present invention but can be altered to meet the desires of the user and as previously mentioned the positioning of this advertising medium or matter on the wall adjacent the elevator or in the corridor of the building is at the desire of the user.
Having set forth an operative structure illustrating the principle of my improved system a short description of its operation will be given.
In use the device operates as follows-If either the up or down button is pressed for signaling the elevator current is delivered to the relay X or relay Y as the case may be thus energizing their coil and pulling over either the relay contact arm 27 or 28 into contact with either the terminals 14 or 16.
WVhen either one of the relay arms 27 or 28 contact with the terminals 14 or 16 a circut is closed which energizes the coil 23 of the magnetic switch Z which pulls the member 41 upward against its spring'42 with the result that the contacts 13 and 24 meet and the contacts 22 and 29 meet thus closin the circuit of the main street current lines 6 and D and the electric light 31 in the advertising medium is illuminated.
Although the closing of the circuit through either of the push buttons 1 and 2 may be only momentary, the contact is however suflicient to bring into operation the magnetic switch Z and once the switch Z is closed it will remain closed until the circuit through, it is in some way broken because the magnetic switch Z is on the main current lines C and D.
The result of the foregoing is that the minute either of the push buttons are actuated to signal the elevator the advertising medium becomes illuminated and flashes into view and attracts the attention of the person signaling the elevator. This makes practically compulsory notice of the advertising matter by the person or persons signaling the elevator. It will be readily apparent that this advertising medium flashing on in the vision of the person signaling the elevator is bound to attract attention, which of course is the desire of all advertising matter.
The advertising medium will remain illuminated until the elevator reaches the floor from which the signal was given, but when the elevator operator opens the elevator shaft door the closed circuit through the magnetic switch Z will be broken as the spring switch 20 is placed in the path of travel of the elevator door and when the elevator door is opened the switch arm 20 is engaged by the door and forced away from contact 19 thus breaking the circuit and allowing the member 41 of the magnetic switch to be pulled downwardly by its spring 42. The breaking'of the contact switch has opened the circuit and the downward movement of the member 41 has further opened the circuit with the result that the light in the advertising medium is extinguished. lVhen the elevator door is closed the spring switch arm 20 will again engage contact 19 but the circuit to the light will remain open because there is no contact between the terminals 13 and 24 and the terminals 22 and 29.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided .an advertising system in conjunction with a signaling system where when a signal is given there is forced display of advertising matter.
The person giving the signal can not avoid the operation of the system to show advertising matter at the instant of signaling. The advertising matter will remain on display until the signal is answered.
In addition to providing this improved advertising system in conjunction with an elevator service the advertising system will better the elevator service in that it will be necessary for the elevator operator to go to the floor from which the signal is flashed in order to extinguish and discontinue the advertising display. WVhen the signal call is answered the discontinuance of the display is automatic.
The elevator system illustrated and described is of the two button type, but by the elimination of one relay the same system can be adapted to a single button type of elevator signaling system. By a single button type I have reference to an elevator signaling sys tem which does not register an up or down call to the elevator o aerator but merely registers on the elevator a call from a certain floor.
Other changes of construction, wiring and variations in the component parts of the system can be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
Attention is called to the fact that after the advertising is once visible and then the illumination discontinued by the opening of the elevator door, the mechanism is returned to its original condition for operation again. Furthermore the apparatus on each floor works independently of that on the other floor.
Attention is also called to the fact that once the signal is given the advertising mat ter remains illuminated until the signal is answered. Repeated signals can be sent from the same floor without further affecting the circuit of the advertising display, which display will remain illuminated until the signal is answered.
The transparent mirror in front of the advertising matter is such that no advertising matter is visible until the illumination takes place. Thus the front of the box carrying the advertising matter will appear as an ordinary mirror until the light is illuminated through the use of the push button signal.
The same results and operation of the invention could be obtained by eliminating completely the relays X and Y and their cooperating circuits by the use of double contact push buttons. In a construction of this kind the push button would close not only the low voltage signal circuit for the elevator but would also close the 110 volt street circuit and thus energize the magnet of the magnetic switch to bring about the closing of the light circuit and the display of the advertising matter. The alteration of the system in this respect is an obvious and slight alteration which clearly falls within the inventive scope of the present system.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination with an electrical signaling system for elevators wherein the elevator is signaled by the pushing of an electric push button, an advertising medium adapted to be displayed by illumination, pushing of said electric button automatically illuminating said advertising display, means comprising a magnetic switch energized upon the pushing of said push button for closing and maintaining a closed circuit to continue the illumination of said advertising medium, and a circuit breaker adapted to be actuated by the elevator shaft door upon the arrival of the elevator and the opening of said shaft door for breaking the closed circuit of said magnetic circuit maker and breaker for opening the circuit illuminating means and cansing the discontinuation of the illumination, for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
LE ROY O. WERNER.
