The present invention relates in general to an improved container and has particular reference to a sheet metal container provided with a frangible seal or fibre drum head are ranged at one end of the container.

The principal object of the present invention is the provision of a container initially closed by a frangible seal and reclosed by a friction member after the frangible seal has 1!! been broken.

An important object of the invention is the provision of a drum head construction for a container which is simple and inexpensive to make, which is leak proof and moisture proof,

it and which is easil broken to gain access to the contents scale in the container;

An important object of the invention is the provision of an improved frangible seal holding ring secured to one end of a container 89 and retaining the seal in closing or sealing osition within the container prior to its eing broken. a

An important object of the invention is the provisionof a frangible seal for a container which is secured in position to efiect a closure for the container, and which is protected during shipment by a removable friction plug that acts as a reclosure after the opening of the container.

80 An important obj ectof the invention is the provision of a container provided with a frangible seal holding member securing the seal in closing position within the container and after opening of the container by a re- 35 moval of the seal to provide a substantially full opening for the container to permit easy discharge of its contents.

A further important object of the invention is the provision of a frangible seal holding member which is easily secured within one end of the container and which is adapted to receive a friction plug reclosure member.

Numerous other objects of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood 3% from the following description, which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawirgs, discloses a preferred embodiment there- Referring to the drawing: Fig. 1 is a perspective viewpf the difiercnt parts constituting the improved container of the present invention, these; parts being shown in separated position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of one' corner of a container embodying this resent invention, the view illustrating thefliss'embled parts in sealed and closing position.

To illustrate a preferred embodiment of the present invention there is shown in the drawing a cylindrical can body 11 provided with flanges l2 and 13. The flange 13 provides an engaging part on which fits the flange 15 of an annular rin 14. The flanges 13 and 15 may be interfolde in a double seam 16 of the usual and preferred type and the lower part of the ring extends downward along the inner face of the glcontainer body. The bottom edge of the ring 14 is curled or inwardly bent as at 17 to provide a seat or shoulder for a frangible seal or drum head 18, preferably of fibre or similar material. The edges of this seal 18 are stretched over and incorporated in the curl 17, this construction securely holding the seal in place in the container after the ring 14 has been inserted therein and double seamed to the body 11.

A friction plug 19 is preferably used in connection with the drum head and is inserted within the upper end of the container body 11 and in frictional contact'with the inner wall of the annular ring 14. The plug 19 may be provided with an upper curled edge 21 and a bottom wall 22, as illustrated. This plug provides a protection for the drum head and afiords a reclosure after the seal has been broken and the container opened.

The frangible seal holding ring 14 may be inserted in the upper end of the can body 11 after an end 23, having an extending flange 24, has been double seamed to the body 11 by an interfoldir g of the flanges l2 and 24. In this case, however, it would be necessary to fill the container with its contents before the drum head end is closed. it would be preferable, however, to first secure the ring 14 and frangible seal 18 in position and insert the friction plug 19 before the and member 23 has been applied. The drum head end of the 1% container would then constitute the bottom until after the filling operation.

In its full closing position the bottom wall 22 of the plug preferably rests against the frangible seal 18 and holds its edges tightly against the curl 17. When this end is in the bottom of the container during filling the wall 22 constitutes a full support for the relatively fragile drum head. After'the con tainer has been filled its end 23 is secured in closing position b double seaming.

Irrespective of w ich end of the container has been first closed, the end containing the fran 'ble seal is used as the upper end of the fille container, and access to the interior thereof and to the contents sealed therein is readily made by breaking the seal 18 and removing it from its held position on the curl 17. The friction plug 19 thereafter is used as a reclosure, it being understood that this plug must be removed prior to the breaking of the seal 18 and the opening of the container. It may be replaced as many times as desired durin the dispensing of the contents of the contamer asit is consumed, the lug acting as a reclosure in each instance. nasmuchas the curled bottom edge 17 of the ring 14 is relatively close to the inner side walls of the can body 11, this curled edge will form a practi cally no obstruction to the removal of the contents of the container, and practically a full opening container is created upon the breakin and removal of the frangible seal. It is t ought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof. 7
